Category: Ethics

  • Abortion

Note at least two moral reasons each side presents to show their view on the topic is correct. Topic: Abortion Minimum of 5 scholarly sources (in addition to the textbook) The elements of moral philosophy First, return to your topic chosen in the week three assignment. Answer this question: What are the personal and/or communal ethical factors that may be involved in determining the moral position of either side in that debate? Next, articulate and then evaluate the ethical positions using Kantian ethics (that is, the categorical imperative) relative to the long standing debate (that is your topic chosen in the week three assignment). Finally, create a complete annotated bibliography for 5 academic scholarly sources. You will annotate each source. The sources should be relevant to your topic chosen in the week three assignment. Include the following: Publication details Annotation (a detailed reading of the source) Each annotation section should include the following: Summarize key points and identify key terms (using quotation marks, and citing a page in parentheses). Describe the controversies or “problems” raised by the articles. State whether you agree or disagree and give reasons. Locate one or two quotations to be used in the final research project. Evaluate the ways in which this article is important and has helped you focus your understanding. Use the following as a model: APA Reference Mezirow, J. (2003). Transformative learning as discourse. Journal of Transformative Education, 1(1), 58-63. Annotation Example In this article, Mezirow (2003) makes a distinction between “instrumental” and “communicative” learning. “Instrumental learning” refers to those processes which measure and gauge learning, such as tests, grades, comments, quizzes, attendance records and the like. “Communicative learning,” on the other hand, refers to understanding created over time between individuals in what Mezirow calls “critical-dialectical-discourse,” (p. 59) which is a fancy way of saying, important conversation between 2 or more speakers. Another key idea Mezirow discusses is “transformative learning,” (p. 61) which changes the mind, the heart, the values and beliefs of people so that they may act better in the world. Mezirow argues that “hungry, desperate, homeless, sick, destitute, and intimidated people obviously cannot participate fully and freely in discourse” (p. 59). On the one hand, he is right: there are some people who cannot fully engage because their crisis is so long and deep, they are prevented. But, I don’t think Mezirow should make the blanket assumption that everyone in unfortunate circumstances is incapable of entering the discourse meaningfully. One thing is certain: if we gave as much attention to the non-instrumental forms of intelligence–like goodness, compassion, forgiveness, wonder, self-motivation, creativity, humor, love, and other non-measured forms of intelligence in our school curriculums, we’d see better people, actors in the world, and interested investigators than we currently have graduating high school. • Hook the reader
    • Consider including:
    • Personal connection/anecdote
    • Relevant news/ current events or overarching trends
    • Identify and describe the focus/problem
    • A research problem is a definite or clear expression [statement] about an area of concern, a condition to be improved upon, a difficulty to be eliminated, or a troubling question that exists in scholarly literature, in theory, or within existing practice that points to a need for meaningful understanding and deliberate investigation. A research problem does not state how to do something, offer a vague or broad proposition, or present a value question.
    • Thesis statement
    • Finish by stating the purpose of the project explicitly in 1-2 sentences.
    • Thesis statements: breaks down an issue or an idea into its component parts, evaluates the issue or idea, and presents this breakdown and evaluation to the audience.

    Discussion:

(2-3 pages) The discussion is your analysis of the timeline in relation to the problem. Using theory, youll consider why the events happened the way they did and why certain actions were taken and/or had certain effects. This section is often considered the most important part of a research paper because it most effectively demonstrates your ability as a researcher to think critically about an issue, to develop creative solutions to problems based on the literature, and to formulate a deeper, more profound understanding of the problem you are studying.

    • Reference a minimum of 3 events from your timeline with citations.
    • Identify, define, and cite the theory/theories you are using to support your analysis
    • Be sure to answer the following questions:
    • What theory/theories are you using to support your analysis?
    • What barriers were faced? How were they overcome?
    • How does the timeline relate to the course material?
    • Recommendations:
    • Use Quotes Sparingly: Some short quotes are appropriate if you want to emphasize a point, or if what an author stated cannot be easily paraphrased. Sometimes you may need to quote certain terminology that was coined by the author. Do not use extensive quotes as a substitute for using your own words in reviewing existing literature.
    • Use your own voice dont try to sound academic

    Conclusion:

(1/2-1 page) What’s next? What recommendations do you have for policy or practice?

ALSO: Create a visual timeline similar to the one attached. Information below.

Timeline: The main component of the assignment is the timeline which visually outlines and describes 5 historical events. All the events should relate to your topic. Be intentional about what you include and why. Be sure you present the events in chronological order and explain the reason you have included the events you selected.

    • 5 events organized chronologically
    • Can be a digital timeline or a photo of a physical timeline
    • For each event:
    • The year/date of the event
    • Title to describe the event
    • Short paragraph/2-3 bullet points about the event and its significance
    • Picture related to the event
  • phl218 week 5 post

Form a counterargument regarding the dilemma using one or more theories. Apply ethical theories which contrast with the argument, using scholarly sources. Formulate how the ethical theories lend clarity to an opposing viewpoint in the dilemma. Discuss which questions emerge from the counterargument and the application of contrasting ethical theories. Examine the limitations of the opposing ethical theories to the dilemma.
