  • Discussion Forum #3: Choosing an Ethical Approach

There are numerous models or theories that guide ethical thinking. Often, three two schools of thought rise to the top as exemplars of moral reasoning because they can be distilled down to different (but possibly complementary) ways of thinking about ethical quandaries–Utilitarianism (aka Consequentialism), Deontology, and Virtue Ethics.

For this forum assignment, please write at least 350 words covering the following three topics:

    1. Identify the key differences between Utilitarian, Deontological, and Virtue Ethics thinking.
    2. Which is your “favourite” ethical model–and why? Feel free to combine elements of more than one system to create your own hybrid model:)
    3. Respond to at least two of your classmates’ posts.

NOTE: You will not be able to successfully complete this assignment until you have viewed ALL the videos and read ALL the readings for week 3 on Cougar Courses–starting with Harris, ch2: A Practical Ethics Toolkit.

  • Arctic Refuge drilling controversy ethics

    1) Review each of the websites below. Decide what is, in your view, the central moral issue that is at stake. There is more than one central issue — but use all three websites/links to decide what you will focus on. All four websites deal with the same issues. Please only choose one issue to work with. Then, take a stand; i.e., decide what should happen or what the right/good/just action to take should be. State clearly the stand you are taking in your exam. 2) Defend your stand using at least two of the approaches to ethics we have covered to date. Toward that end, the following suggestion might be helpful. While you are free to select any two of the approaches we have been working with, choosing a pair of approaches that contrast might be especially meaningful. For example, duty/deontological ethics and utilitarianism are a pair of contrasting approaches. In using both for your paper, you could (for example) suggest what a utilitarian might say and then reject a utilitarian conclusion by using duty ethics (including something in your short paper about why a duty/deontological approach is better… Alternatively, a person could suggest what duty ethics might prescribe but then go onto explain what a utilitarian might conclude, including some thoughts about why utilitarianism is more appropriate… Make sure your defense supports the stand that you take. If one approach supports or defends your stand well, and the other does not, then rebut the one that does not, ie., say why it is faulty. (Toward this end, the weaknesses we talked about, relative to each approach we worked with, will help, i.e., use what you know of an approaches weaknesses to rebut or argue against it). There is no length requirement for the mid-term . I also attached my discussion post to holp with my stance on the two types of ethics please make sure your stance is within the same views. • Module 3: Case Study Assignment

Is ethics an important topic today? Turn on the t.v. or read the news and you’ll quickly learn the answer to that question.

We’ve all developed some sense of ethics during our childhood, from our parents and family, religious institutions, educational institutions, and even from our businesses.
