    Introduction

As technology continues to evolve, the ethical use of new technologies and the data associated with them continue to be a major concern. In this task, you will select a real-world scenario from the attached “Ethical Technology Use Scenarios” document that involves a potential ethical issue surrounding the use of technology. You will then apply ethical frameworks and propose a response to the issue.

    Requirements

Your submission must represent your original work and understanding of the course material. Most performance assessment submissions are automatically scanned through the WGU similarity checker. Students are strongly encouraged to wait for the similarity report to generate after uploading their work and then review it to ensure Academic Authenticity guidelines are met before submitting the file for evaluation. See for more information.

    Grammarly Note:

Professional Communication will be automatically assessed through Grammarly for Education in most performance assessments before a student submits work for evaluation. Students are strongly encouraged to review the Grammarly for Education feedback prior to submitting work for evaluation, as the overall submission will not pass without this aspect passing. See for more information.

    A. Discuss an ethical issue in the selected scenario by doing the following:

    1. Identify the selected scenario and describe one ethical issue that occurs.

    2. Discuss the impact of the ethical issue from part A1. Include why the ethical issue is a problem and who is impacted by it.

    3. Explain the role a data privacy, data access, data accuracy, or data security concern played in the selected scenario.

    B. Apply an ethical framework to the issue described by doing the following:

    1. Apply one of the following ethical frameworks to develop one potential response to the ethical issue identified in part A1:

    deontology

    virtue ethics

    utilitarianism

    2. Explain how the response from part B1 would be similar or different when applying another ethical framework from those listed in part B1 to the same ethical issue.

    C. Acknowledge sources, using in-text citations and references, for content that is quoted, paraphrased, or summarized.

    D. Demonstrate professional communication in the content and presentation of your submission.

  • Ethical decision-making in the case ‘Girls Night Out’

This assignment builds upon the following assignments you submitted previously: Module 4 Assignment: Identification, Research, Analysis Module 5 Assignment: Application – Act Utilitarianism Module 6 Assignment: Application – Kantian Ethics Be sure to review the feedback you received from those assignments, and make any necessary revisions BEFORE moving forward with this assignment. Focusing on the same case as before, you will now complete the last three steps of the critical thinking process: 5) Decision, 6) Evaluation, and 7) Reflection. Again, read the case in the Ethics e-textbook Chapter 25: Case 2 – Girls Night Out. Since there is no Smart book quiz you will access Chapter 25 through the e-book, Table of Contents. Go to: The Ethics E-Textbook Access Module Click on the Ethics E-Textbook Link. Click on the icon/picture of your Ethics e-text or the words Lauch E-textook, depending upon your view. You will use the Table of Content (click on hamburger (three horizontal lines) in the upper left corner) to access Chapter 25 and locate the Case. Follow the Sample Format: Decision, Evaluation, Reflection, and submit to this Assignment using MLA formatting. Complete this assignment, as follows: Decision (150 words minimum) Consider the main ethical/moral issue you previously identified in Module 4. Answer the “should” question by stating the option you determined to be the wisest and most ethical. For example, The most ethical decision is for _____ to… Be impartial. Avoid any bias; do not express your own personal opinion; do not use the words, “I think” or “I feel.” The decision should be based upon your completion of the previous steps of the critical thinking process: 1) Identification, 2) Research, 3) Analysis and 4) Application of Act Utilitarianism and Kantian Ethics. Clearly justify and support your decision. For example, This decision is morally justified because… Discuss how the results of determining Net Utility and applying Universality and Respect-for-Persons informed your decision. A justification is necessary – there is no better option. What would justify your decision to all of the stakeholders? Evaluation (150 words minimum) To evaluate your decision, play “devil’s advocate.” Think of some objections or arguments someone could make against your decision. List three potential objections to your decision, and then write a defense against each objection. Each defense should be based upon an ethical theory and/or logic. For example, if you determined that the most ethical decision is for Jack to report Jill’s stealing to the boss, one objection might be, If Jack informs his boss, Jill might retaliate against him. A defense against that objection could be, Jack believes reporting misconduct is his moral duty, and, therefore, overrides any concern of possible retaliation. (Kantian Ethics) Objection 1 – For example, If Jack informs his boss, Jill might retaliate against him. Defense – For example, Jack believes reporting misconduct is his moral duty, and, therefore, overrides any concern of possible retaliation. (Kantian Ethics) Objection 2 – Defense – Objection 3 – Defense – Reflection (150 words minimum) Reflect on the critical thinking process and the steps involved. Discuss how this knowledge can or has helped you in your life and/or your career? For example, what do you think of the process? What did you learn from the process? Could it bring value to making decisions in your life or career? Would you use it in the future? Would you use it, or parts of it, in your everyday life? Have you used it in your everyday life? Do not write about the case itself, the decision you reached, or what you thought should or should not have happened relating to the case. Assignment Rules Use MLA Formatting (see Student Resources Module. Double-space the entire document. Adjust all font color/style/size to black Times New Roman 12 pt. Put the heading in the upper left corner of the first page; include your name, the professor’s name, the course name, and the date. Use the document header to display your last name and page number in the upper right corner of each page. Put the “Works Cited” on the last page, and the total word count at the end of the document. Example: Works Cited Manias, Nicholas & Monroe, Dave. The Moral Compass: An Introductory Guide to Critical Thinking and Applied Ethics. 2nd ed. New York: McGraw-Hill, 2022. This includes but is not limited to Grammarly (which is normally found in MS Word), Translator, Copilot, Chat GPT and all other AI programs, as they will flag your work as AI written. It is your responsibility to open and check your Copy Leaks report, after submitting an Assignment, for both the plagiarism/originality (shown by a percentage and a report) and AI use (shown by report only). Resubmit ASAP as needed. Ethics involves Critical Thinking and AI cannot critically think. Ask AI as it will confirm this. AI also plagiarizes from the internet. Both are academic honesty violations. Please know, I realize some of these AI programs are very good and can be very helpful in completing work, but in this course, I need you to do the critical thinking and brainstorming yourself. You can think divergently while AI cannot. You can think critically, while AI cannot. You can self- reflect and improve your thinking based on your self-reflection, while AI cannot. You can take into consideration human emotions (EQ) while AI cannot. These are the skills we all want to improve in this course. AI cannot help us. Also, know, in my use of AI, I have found many errors in AI responses. Luckily, I know the subject matter and I can identify these errors as you will too, after you learn the material. So please do not think I am against AI. It does have its place, but it is not helpful for leaning in this class. I hope this is helpful.

  • Case Studies

    1. You have applied the MDR to Per Diem step by step. Now write a short essay explaining what you should do in this case, taking all four elements into account. Use every step of the MDR to determine a morally permissible course of action for the Per Diem scenario. As a military member and friend to Grace, are there any other actions you can take to support your decision?
    2. Apply the MDR to decide what the right thing to do in the Clouds Over the Mountain case. Here, the right thing to do is not necessarily the same thing you would do as a service member, because the duty to obey lawful orders might override doing what you think is the best thing. If you decide that the right thing to do is contrary to your orders, then perhaps you could explain your point of view to your superiors and try to get your orders changed. Use every step of the MDR to determine a morally permissible course of action for the Clouds Over the Mountains scenario. As a combat leader, are there other actions you can take to support your decision?

  • Corporate social responsibility

Instructions Let’s continue our efforts to apply some of the ethical theories we are learning about in the so-called “real world.” Some examples in works of the various video lectures we have watched, and textbook chapters we have read about so far, relate to individual actions, that is, specific behavior by a single person. However, ethics also applies to groups of people, including nations and other socio-cultural groups, as well as professional groups and institutions, such as professional associations and companies. Required Resource Watch this video from Harvard Business School online on the concept of corporate social responsibility: A short video overview of the concept of corporate social responsibility and how businesses and industries can consider their ethical obligations to others, both internally and externally. Supplemental Reading You can also read this related web article from Harvard Business School online that explains the four major types of Corporate Social responsibility Links to an external site. mentioned in the video: environmental responsibility, ethical responsibility, philanthropic responsibility, and economic responsibility. Then go on a web search to find an example of a business’ approach to corporate social responsibility. Examples might include a company’s ethics statement or specific projects/targets they commit to in their community. Feel free to look for a business or industry related to your major or career path, or perhaps look up a company you are interested in or for which you are a customer. Post a summary of the example and link to the article, website, and/or video so that others might also read/see it in its original form. Discuss how the example you found practices corporate social responsibilityand you are free to discuss whether it may be limited or seems superficial. Finally, consider how one or more of the ethical theories we are learning about might be underneath the reasoning or approach to corporate responsibility in the example you found (e.g., virtue ethics, utilitarianism, etc.) Minimum post length 300 words, please. Make sure you complete the Academic Integrity Screening for the main text of your discussion post. Simply format your main discussion post as a short one- or two-page paper (replies not needed and you may leave out any images if included) and upload it at the Academic Integrity Screening link for Discussion 4. (The same deadlines apply.) Then reply to at least two of your classmates’ posts with respectful comments, questions of curiosity, and work to make connections and comparisons between the ideas and concepts discussed. Replies should be at least three complete sentences and present substantive and specific ideas and/or examples. Supplemental Resource To understand the concept of corporate social responsibility a bit more deeply, you might listen to Professor Thomas Beschorner of the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland, who breaks down the concept a bit further with some specific global business examples: Or, to complicate your thinking (in a positive way), consider watching this TED Talk by Rachel Hutchisson, a tech executive who focuses on philanthropy. She argues that the role of individual human actors will again have a stronger role in developing ethical workplace-community relations, largely due to the importance of small to mid-size business. Required Reading Two key concepts/vocabulary in philosophy related to this idea : Beneficence is when an action or rule-based duty is intended to benefit others. Beneficent actions can be voluntary or obligatory. Both Mill and Kant discussed the moral psychology, strengths, and limitations around the concept of beneficence in their works. Read more at the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy entry on ” The Principle of Beneficence in Applied Ethics Links to an external site. .” False Dichotomy/False DilemmaToo often, we consider ethical issues as all-or-nothing situations; it is important we do not discuss the issues as concepts involved as false dilemmas. For example, corporate social responsibility does not create a false dilemma by dividing profit v. people or profit v. the planetit looks for shared solutions. Read more about the logic or rhetorical fallacy of creating a false dichotomy, or false dilemma Links to an external site. .
