- Identify the stakeholders involved.
- Describe the ethical conflict or failure.
- Analyze the dilemma using ethical theories:
- Apply at least two ethical theories (e.g., deontology, utilitarianism, virtue ethics) to interpret the decisions made.
- Reference Rests Four-Component Model to assess the decision-making process.
- Consider the influence of leadership styles and ethical climate.
- Draw connections to course topics:
- Discuss how themes such as diversity, ethical training, hiring practices, leadership, or community outreach were (or were not) evident in the case.
- Compare the ethical approaches used in the case with best practices discussed in class.
- Make recommendations:

- What can ethical leaders today learn from this case?

Ethics of dissent and whistleblowing
This essay assignment addresses course outcomes 2 3, 4 and 5, and module outcomes 2, 3 and 4. The purpose of this assignment is for you to further analyze the ethics of dissension. Thus far, you have reviewed several types and instances of dissent as well as the personal characteristics of some of those actors who blew the whistle on activities they perceived as unethical. For example, we have seen Presidential impeachments begin due to whistleblowing activities, from FBI official Mark Felts actions during the Nixon-Watergate era, to most recently the CIA whistle-blower and the first impeachment of Donald Trump. In this essay assignment, you will explore these subjects further by examining some of these instances and what they mean for ethical accountability. You should draw on materials widely available to you in the course as well as any credible and high-quality outside sources. Before beginning this essay assignment, make sure to read the Module Notes carefully and you will want to access the Readings, Viewings and Materials page for further review. Write an essay of approximately 500 words in length (approximately 2 pages of doubled-spaced and 12 point font of text) using APA format. In your essay, draw on as many significant examples as are appropriate while fully answering the following questions: In your view, what is the value of dissent, loyal or otherwise? Considering any of its most controversial forms of principled resignation, whistleblowing, leaking of classified information, outright violation of good order and conduct (i.e., opposing orders/directives etc.), do you find dissent something necessary and vital to protect? If so, why; if not, why not? Finally, drawing on your own personal and/or professional experiences, recall a whistleblowing action you have seen or learned about. How do you consider this event now in terms of personal loyalty to the group versus the dissenter holding to some higher principle or ethical standard? In your view, is national security improved by protection of whistleblowing; was it in this instance? To successfully complete this assignment, you will need to organize your responses to the questions posed above, and then craft a formatted essay that includes each of the following: A title page; Well-developed introductory paragraph explaining the purpose of the essay and briefly referencing some of the main points/contentions offered in the work; The body of the assignment should consist of your effort to best answer the primary questions from the assignment prompt and should consist of approximately 500 words of text (approximately 2 pages of double-spaced and 12 point font of text). Though the method by which this is done is largely up to you, it is essential that the responses to the questions in the prompt be based upon scholarly readings and should remain at all times defensible (in an academic sense). You have a great deal of information to draw from in creating your essay, including the assigned and optional readings as well as many references in the module notes. As is the case with every assignment in BNS301, presenting any unsubstantiated, illogical, or indefensible position will have an adverse effect on the final grade. Please direct any questions regarding these expectations to the instructor; A concise concluding paragraph that briefly restates both the purpose of the essay as well as some of the primary argument offered by you, the papers author. Be sure the concluding paragraph does not introduce new information; A list of all sources consulted the preparation of the essay. The essay should be formatted according to APA-style documentation. Links to an external site. This includes the format of the list of references.
