    Instructions and Question

Why has the development of American cultural institutions and practices indicated the strains within American social structure, and does it provide a foundation for continued national development?

    • To begin your paper, you will need a distinctive and individual response to this question (i.e. your opinion on this question)
    • Consider responding to this question by identifying a distinctive quality and stance (positive or negative? Specific groups or communities involved? Is there change taking place? And so forth)
    • This is your thesis statement, and it will become the foundation for your analysis and discussion going forward in your writing
    • You will use this question as the foundation for your analysis of our readings and formation of your argument
    • Make sure that your critique of the individual readings is viewed with this question in mind dont ignore your thesis until the end of the paper!

You will select four articles from the readings that were posted in our weekly sections between Weeks One through Eight. Each reading chosen must be from a different week, so you cannot use more than one reading from any week (ex. You cannot use two readings from Week Three).

For each reading you should have two solid, detailed paragraphs.

    First Paragraph:

    • Identify the thesis or main argument being made by the author
    • Discuss how the author supports his argument/thesis (identify the secondary arguments made and some of the key examples used as evidence)
    • Argue whether or not you agree with the author (was the argument and evidence effective or not? Why or why not?)

    Second Paragraph

    • How do you interpret or critique this article in relation to your thesis argument?
    • Discuss what agrees with and supports your ideas and what doesnt
    • Use strong examples from the reading to support your ideas explain them in detail (i.e. more than one sentence)

You will do this (two detailed paragraphs of review and analysis) for each of the four readings you select.

To conclude your paper, you will synthesize (combine your analysis points) what you have argued for each of the four separate articles and make a final, strong defense of your thesis. You should argue why the evidence proves you are correct. You may want to consider showing how your argument is relevant to current conditions and events in the United States. Tie the past and present together, especially depending upon the articles you have chosen. Remember, you need to summarize your point and strongly clarify your argument.

  • Gender Roles and Their Impact on Students Behavior

i am conducting a qualitative research in Gender Studies about how gender roles affect students behavior, choices, and experiences in school. I want to understand how societys expectations for males and females influence their actions and opportunities.

    Please help me:

Explain what gender roles are in a simple way

Identify common gender stereotypes among students

Discuss how these roles affect behavior, confidence, and decision-making

Provide examples or situations that support the topic

The answer should be clear, simple, and appropriate for senior high school research.

  • Gender Credentials

This document is meant to capture your gender identity as you currently understand it. Consider it a hybrid of several genresan ID card, a resume, an arts n crafts project, a social networking portfoliobut bear in mind that were asking you to conduct a healthy dose of analysis and to be as candid as possible. ** We will discuss each piece of the gender credentials project in class as a mini-workshop. Toward the end of the term, you will put together the pieces you have started in class and submit as one individual project.

At minimum, your Credentials should include the following:

    • Opening characterization of your gender identity. Address reality (i.e., how you think you really are, or what you live up to currently), fantasy (i.e., how you wish to be, or to what you would aspire in the absence of constraint), and fear (i.e., the kind of gender identity you especially wish to avoid, or how you do not want to come off). Briefly, summarize the major evidence upon which your reality claims are based; explain why your aspiration is not (yet) fulfilled and what it would take to do so; and describe how you stave off undesirable gender.
    • Intersectional analysis. Explain how your opening characterization interacts with (relates to, stems from, is enabled and constrained by, etc.) other aspects of your identity, specifically (a) body/physicality/appearance, (b) age, (c) race/ethnicity, (d) class (i.e., socio-economic position), (e) religion, (f) sexuality, (g) regional & national origin, (h) abilities & disabilities, (i) mental and physical health, and/or any other factors you deem relevant that are not listed here. Which of these factors feel most significant or pressing to you, and why do you suppose that is?
    • Situational variation. How and to what extent would you say that your gender identity varies by situation? Identify specific contexts (e.g., with family, at work, on a date, hanging with same- or other-sex friends) in which your gender identity tends to shift, and tell us about those adaptations (e.g., what situational cues and identity desires/threats do you tend to respond to and why)? Or if you think your gender identity leans more toward constancy, provide examples of stability across situations.
    • Education and mentors. Identify and explain what you consider to be your formative gender experiences thus far, as well as major (positive or negative) models who have guided you.
    • Most repeated/enforced messages. If you had to identify the top 3 or so gender messages (explicit or subtle) that youve encountered over time, what would they be?
    • List all the activities in which you participate that support the gender identity youve claimed. Think broadly here, as these may include a wide range of activitiessuch as daily rituals or habits, specific relationships, the kind of work you (wish to) do, hobbies and leisure activities, political or religious involvementsyou name it! (How) would your activities have to change in order to support your gender fantasy?
    • Include 2-3 artifacts that somehow represent, embody, reflect, or evoke the identity youve claimed here. Artifacts may be textual (e.g., a favorite poem or song lyrics), visual (e.g., images from a magazine that grab your eye), or both (e.g., a description of some meaningful material artifact). The key here is to clarify the relation between the artifact and your gender identity. In other words, as long as that relationship is made clear, the format is up to you.

This assignment is supposed to be about myself. I have attached my resume to here, so you can get a better grasp of who I am. Also, here is a little bit more about myself to help you out; I am from Westfield, New Jersey, 21 years old, I have a younger brother at San Diego State University, I used to go to Arizona State University before transferring to CU Boulder, I grew up playing lacrosse and basketball at an all boys catholic school called Seton Hall Prep. My favorite genre of music is house and classic rock.

Now that you know a little bit about me, please complete this assignment to the best of your ability, if you have to make stories and scenarios up in the paper about myself, then feel free to do so. Thank you.

  • Reflection 2

Your reflection should be written in your own words and demonstrate critical thinking, self-reflection, and application of sociological concepts. Guiding Questions (choose a few to reflect on; you do not need to answer all): How has your understanding of the social construction of romantic love and marriage evolved? What role do media (such as Disney films or reality TV) play in shaping cultural ideals of romance? Consider the gendered politics of dating. Are their expectations of behavior depending on gender? Are there ways you are expected to perform masculinity or femininity? For example, who pursues who? Who pays? Who makes decisions on where to eat? How have you observed (in your family, community, or personal experiences) expectations around intensive mothering? Or mothers having to take on a second shift (referring to women who must do the primary parenting and household duties after working outside the home. How do you feel about various marriage practices outside of monogamy? Do you think monogamy is ideal or are there other forms of marriage that make sense to you? Formatting for Reflection: 12-point font, double-spaced, 1-inch margins Include proper ASA-style citations for readings, films, or outside sources Length: 500750 words
  • beyond the gender binary

Beyond the Gender Binary. Using Vaid-Menons life experiences as a springboard, alongside relevant concepts from the course, develop an intersectional analysis of the misconceptions people have about gender and how they affect people, especially trans and non-binary people in the United States of America and worldwide. Considering Vaid-Menons discussion of dismissal and all the cissexist and transmisogynist ideas people hold about gender and trans and non-binary people, how can nations, cultures, and communities move beyond the gender binary?

Ensure that your essay uses specific examples from the text and relates them to your life and the broader world around you. For example, how did Alok learn about gender and the social penalties for gender non-conformity? What role did institutions such as schools, families, and media (especially social media) play in their gender socialization and in reinforcing the gender binary? What role did they play in yours? Alok argues that it takes a lot of work to sustain the gender binary. How did Aloks experiences help you to understand how the gender binary is reinforced in everyday social interactions? Can you reflect on this in your life?

Remember, the questions above are meant as a guideline; while they must be addressed in the essay, students should not bullet-point their answers to the questions in the prompt. Essays should follow a standard essay format, and be comprised of an introduction (with a clear thesis), body paragraphs (with evidence from assigned materials), and a conclusion. Your conclusion is not a copy and paste of the introduction; it is a final discussion reflecting on the implications of your analysis.

Your essay should have at least four citations from Alok Vaid-Menons book, Beyond the Gender Binary. In addition to this, you may also cite the textbook, as necessary. Thus, the only sources that should be used for this essay are the sources below. There should be no outside sources or citations in your essay, only assigned materials.

    • Alok Vaid-Menon. 2020. Beyond the Gender Binary. New York: Penguin.
    • Wade, Lisa and Myra Marx Ferree. 2023. Third Edition. Gender: Ideas, Interactions, Institutions. New York: W.W. Norton.

  • Women’s status in ancient Greek society

just replying to the discussions discussion 1: After reading Dr. Williams’s chapter on the Greek world, I do agree that women’s status in the poleis was really ambiguous. It’s like on one hand, women were absolutely vital to the functioning of the city. Dr. Williams says, only children born to legally married, freeborn citizen parents could become citizens. Because they gave birth to the next generation of citizens, women played a vital biological and social role. In that sense, they were key to the survival of the polis. However, women were not considered full citizens themselves. They could not hold office, vote, or directly participate in political life. This conflict is what makes their status so complex. The difference between Sparta and Athens really stood out to me. The adulterous law was extremely severe in Athens, which took illegitimate citizenship very seriously. If a husband caught someone else with his wife, he was legally allowed to kill the man. Women’s bodies were controlled because the city’s political system depended on “pure” citizen lines. Sparta, on the other hand, was very different. There is a law allowing a man to sleep with another man’s wife with consent in order to have healthy children reflects very different priorities. Sparta valued military strength more than anything else. Spartan women also had more freedom, like owning properties and engaging in physical training. While they did not hold political office, it seems they had more economic and social independence than Athenian women. The ancient documents show that women did face a lot of limitations, mainly in Athens, where they had to stay in the household and stay out of the public eye. However, there is some evidence to the opposite in Sparta, where women appear to have had more freedom. The thing that most stood out to me was how women’s worth was always determined by the demands of the state, whether it was to produce strong soldiers in Sparta or legitimate heirs in Athens. Despite their own barrier from full public participation, their identity was closely linked to citizenship and family. discussion 2: I agree with Dr. Williams that womens status in Greek society was ambiguous: they were not full citizens but were vital as mothers of future citizens, which created value and serious limitations. This appears across most of the sources, where womens roles centered on reproduction and family, yet they faced significant restrictions to protect civic identity. In Athens, limitations were severe. Lysias On the Murder of Eratosthenes shows how Euphiletos justifies killing his wifes lover, citing laws that permitted it to safeguard legitimate offspring and citizenship. He describes him secluding his wife in womens quarters upstairs, away from men, illustrating the unfair treatment Athenian women enduredno political rights, no property ownership, and constant monitoring to ensure chastity. Scholarship consistently highlights these barriers: Athenian women were excluded from having a public life, voting, or land ownership. That said, Sparta stands out as a bit of an exceptionnot all Greek women faced the same level of restrictions. Xenophons Constitution of the Lacedaemonians explains that Spartan women trained physicallyrunning, wrestling, and building strengthto bear robust soldiers for the state. Lycurgus allowed consensual wife-sharing for reproduction for community benefit, prioritizing the need for a strong military over strict monogamy. Plutarchs Sayings of Spartan Women shows their boldness, like the mother who tells her son to return with your shield or on it, showing their role in fostering warrior values. Aristotle notes Spartan women owned nearly two-fifths of the land through dowries and inheritance, granting unusual economic powerthough he criticizes this as contributing to luxury and disorder. What stands out is the contrast between Athens and Sparta, shaped by civic priorities: Athens guarded democratic citizenship through rigid control of women, while Spartas militarism allowed physical training, economic influence, and communal family practices to strengthen the army. In both poleis, however, womens ambiguity meant empowerment only through service to the statenever as equals. Their status was always subordinate to producing citizens or soldiers, leaving little room for individual agency.
