ELIZA: After taking the quiz, I have a democratic style of leadership. This style is a collaborative style where the leader usually receives input and contributions from team members during a decision making process. The key characteristics of this style involves shared decision making where leaders are actively looking for feedback from members before making a final decision. It also encourages open communication and emphasizes collaboration and creativity from the team. This results in a foundation of increased morale and trust because of this positive team work environment. Advantages of this leadership style is improved job satisfaction where team members feel they are being valued and increased motivation because team members have a say in the decision making process.
The qualities I demonstrate from a democratic leadership style include collaboration and open communication with my team members. In group settings, especially during work meetings, I make it a priority to ask for my teams opinions and perspectives on the best way to move forward. Encouraging open dialogue and brainstorming together helps foster creative thinking. I truly value the input of others because different individuals bring unique perspectives that may highlight important ideas that I might not have seen on my own. Understanding situations from different viewpoints is important in group settings. I also believe this approach boosts team morale and creates a sense of empowerment because everyone feels involved when working together towards a shared goal.
Disadvantages for this type of leadership include slower decision making as it is not ideal in emergency situations. It can also be a challenge when you have team members who dont have the same expertise as others. To improve the slower decision making, the leader can work on setting clearer deadlines and time limits for conversations in order to make the process more efficient and focused. I think delegating roles is important so everyone understands who is responsible for certain tasks. In addition, some personalities can be stronger than others, and they may verbalize more ideas than those who are quieter, dominating the conversations. Therefore, it is important for the leader to encourage those quieter members to also share their ideas.

RENZO:Understanding my leadership style has helped me recognize that I naturally operate from an authoritative approachone grounded in clarity, direction, and a strong sense of responsibility for team performance. This makes sense and is inline with my current work as a Respiratory Therapist in a military medicine setting, where at times, I am the senior enlisted or subject matter expert. In practice, I demonstrate attributes such as decisiveness, accountability, and a commitment to high standards. I value structure, consistency, and the ability to guide teams through uncertainty, which is essential in todays complex healthcare and deployed environment (ACHE, Chapter 21).
At the same time, the PowerPoints emphasize that healthcare leadership is fundamentally about humans working with humans, requiring compassion, trust, and a sense of belonging (ACHE, Chapter 22). This means that even as an authoritative leader, I must balance direction with empathy ensuring my confidence never becomes overbearing. Incorporating more inclusive behaviors, such as listening deeply, learning each team members story, and fostering open dialogue, supports a culture where individuals feel valued rather than expendable (ACHE, Chapter 20). These practices strengthen engagement and help prevent the McDonaldization of healthcare, where efficiency overshadows humanity (ACHE, Chapter 22). There is a limit on how authoritative I can be even within the chain of command. It would be beneficial in high stress environments when I am at the head transporting a critical patient compared to walking through the wards providing nebulizations.
In conclusion, while my authoritative style provides clarity and momentum, integrating inclusive leadership and emotional awareness will help me evolve into a more holistic leader. This balance ensures I continue to grow while supporting my teams development, ultimately contributing to a healthier organizational culture and stronger patient outcomes.
