    Step 1: Watch

Step 2: Summarize the entire video (not just the first five minutes) in one full paragraph, then discuss why you think cultural competence is important in health care. Use Chapter 13 as a resource. Cite any outside sources used to support your ideas. (15 points)

Step 3: Reply to the post of one classmate. Comment on what you think about their summary and additional thoughts you have on the topic. (5 points)

This activity is worth 20 points.

  • Discussion Board – Community Health

Let’s assume the following scenario. You are the health commissioner for a rural county in the Midwest. Health care professionals in your county have reported excessive drug overdoses, alcohol poisoning, and cancers associated with tobacco use in their practices and at the local community hospital. In statistically benchmarking your county against your own state and the nation, you concur with their observation. Reflect on what you believe you can do at the primary, secondary, and tertiary levels to combat these issues. Provide specific examples of community health strategies at each of prevention that you feel would be effect and explain why. Your journal entry must be at least 200 words in length. No references or citations are necessary.
  • DB Culture of Trust and Support

A culture built on trust and support will achieve high performance.

    For this discussion you will:

    • Explain, from your perspective and knowledge of course content, what this statement really means to you.
    • How do you build such a culture?
    • How does leadership and administrative staff help assure that well-meaning, frontline employees understand this culture?
    • How do you know if you have succeeded in establishing this kind of culture within your organization?
    • Support your answer with information provided in your book, your own research, personal experiences, observations, etc.
  • DB2 Quality of Care versus Quality of Life

This discussion forum is designed to explore your thoughts on how quality in health care differs from quality in non-healthcare settings. You must create your own thread and respond before you can view the other students’ posts.

Respond thoughtfully to the following inquiry/question:

    1. Think about and do some independent research on the terms quality of life and quality of care.

    2. Provide an explanation and definition of each of these terms (quality of life versus quality of care) in your own words. While defining these two terms, answer the following:

    • How do these two terms differ yet how do they relate/similarities?
    • Can you have one without the other?
    • As healthcare providers and professionals, how can we promote, assure and measure care practices that maximize quality of life for residents/patients?

To receive full credit you must:

    1. Provide a meaningful initial post that is supported by fact/evidence and not just opinion.
    2. Provide one supporting source/reference of your initial thread, cited at the end of your discussion board in proper APA format.
    3. Proofread and correct any grammar or spelling errors.
    4. Respond to, compare your own thoughts or provide feedback to at least one other student’s post. Rating it does not count as a “response.”
  • DB Baldrige Performance Excellence Program

This discussion forum is designed to explore your thoughts on the Baldrige Performance Excellence Program. This program is very well known by management/leadership teams in healthcare so it is IMPERATIVE that you, as a health care student, are at least vaguely aware of what it is!

Respond thoughtfully to the following inquiry/question:

Quickly review both attachments 1 and 2

    A.Attachment 1 provides detail on Organization Profiles, Part 1 (P.1) and Part 2 (P.2)

    2023-2024-Baldrige-Framework-Health-Care-Organizational-Profile.pdf

B.Attachment 2 also provides detail on the organization profile sections but also has detail on the seven (7) categories on which organizations are rated for the Baldrige Performance Excellence Program (leadership, strategy, customers, measurement, knowledge, operations, results)

    2023-2024-Baldrige-Criteria-Health-Care-Commentary.pdf

C.After reviewing these attachments, find at least one full, current article about healthcare facilities that have been recognized by the Baldrige Performance Excellence Program or an article discussing the merits of this program. Cite this source at the end of your initial discussion thread!

    2. Imagine you have been hired as manager of a healthcare facility that plans to apply for the Baldrige Performance Excellence Program in the next year. As a new manager, you are not familiar with this program but have been tasked with completing the application and starting needed initiatives for sections in which your organization may be lacking.

*You believe that all 7 categories are very important but all need work in your organization. Pick one of the 7 categories that you would choose to focus on and tackle first – and tell us what that choice is.

(leadership, strategy, customers, measurement, knowledge, operations, results)

*Why did you make this choice? Explain.

*Do you believe it is realistic that an organization can excel in all 7 of these categories? Explain your response.

*Why do you believe organizations seek out voluntary achievements such as the Baldrige Performance Excellence Program? They are a lot of work for people that are already overwhelmed with work.

What is the motivation for an organization?

What are the real benefits if any?

Would you pursue this for your organization some day? Why?

To receive full credit you must:

    A. Provide a meaningful, thoughtful and scholarly initial post that is supported by fact/evidence and not just opinion.

    B. Provide one supporting source/reference of your initial thread, cited at the end of your discussion board in proper APA format.

    C. Proofread and correct any grammar or spelling errors.

Once you are comfortably supported in a quiet place, follow the instructions for each

muscle group below (or just listen along to your recording):

    1)

To begin, take three deep abdominal breaths, exhaling slowly each time. As you exhale,

imagine that tension throughout your body begins to flow away.

    2)

    Clench your

    left fist

. Hold for 7-10 seconds, and then release for 15-20 seconds. Repeat

    with the

    right fist

. (Use the same time intervals for all muscle groups.)

    3)

    Tighten your

    forearms

by straightening your fingers and pointing them at the ceiling, then

back towards your body. Hold…and then relax.

    4)

    Tighten your

    biceps

by drawing your forearms up towards your shoulders and making a

    m

    uscle. Hold…and then relax.

    5)

    Shrug your

    shoulders

up towards your ears, tightening the muscles. Hold…and then relax.

    6)

    Wrinkle up your

    forehead

and brow, focusing on the tension in the muscles…and then relax.

    7)

    Squeeze your

    eyes

shut as tightly as you can, feeling the tension in the muscles around the

    eyes. Hold…and then relax.

    8)

    Clench your

    jaw

, hard, flexing the muscles in your jaw and cheek. Hold…and then relax.

    9)

    Press your

    lips

together tightly, pursing them so the muscles around your mouth

tighten…and then allow them to relax.

    10)

Press your head back against the chair or bed, hard, feeling the tension in the

    back of your

    neck

    . Hold…and then relax.

    11)

Allow your head to fall forward, as though trying to bury your chin in your chest, and feel the

    tension in the

    front of your neck

. Hold…and then allow your head to fall back, very naturally.

    12)

Arch your back, sticking out your chest, and feel the tension in your

    upper back

    …and relax.

    13)

Take a deep breath and hold it, feeling the tightness in the muscles around your

    chest

    .

Hold it…and then relax, breathing deeply from the abdomen.

    14)

    Tighten the muscles of your

    stomach

, making the stomach very hard. Hold…and relax.

    15)

Stretch both of your legs, straight out in front of you, until you can feel the tension in the
