  • Micro study

Conduct research on Giardia lamblia and respond to the following questions, using at least two sources in your research. Links to several resources are provided in the Study Materials, but you can use outside sources as well. All sources must be cited in APA Style.

Your overall responses should be approximately 500 to 600 words (2 pages) in length.

    1. What is the estimated size of the trophozoite form of Giardia? How does this compare to the size of most bacteria?
    2. Is it possible to view Giardia with a compound light microscope? How do you know? When viewing Giardia, how can you distinguish the trophozoite from the cyst form?
    3. Is Giardia a prokaryotic or eukaryotic cell? How do you know?
    4. How is Giardia classified? In what domain does it belong?
    5. What kind of illness does Giardia cause?

After reviewing the life cycle of Giardia, respond to the following questions:

    1. If a person has ingested Giardia, what form was it most likely in?
    2. A fecal sample is being observed under magnification for the presence of Giardia. If present, what form would you expect to see?
    3. Samples are collected from a stream that is suspected to harbor Giardia. Which form of the pathogen would you expect to find in the water samples?

Read the article from the journal, Clinical Infectious Diseases, and then respond to the following questions:

    1. Based on Figure 1, what year had the most cases of giardiasis? Which year had the fewest? What is the general trend in cases during the times reported in the article?
    2. Based on the maps in Figure 2, which region of the country typically has more cases of giardiasis? Make a prediction as to why this region has the most cases of giardiasis.

  • Public Health Initiative App Design Project

The role of health informaticists combines the fields of health information, data management, and information technology. Informaticists create processes, design IT-based innovations, applications, analyze data to support business intelligence, and improve the quality of health care. According to Health Information Management Systems Society (HIMSS) (2015), 90% of health care organizations used mobile applications to improve consumer engagement and increase the quality of patient care.

For this project, you will identify a population health problem and create a prototype mobile health application (mHealth) to address the public health initiative.

    In your final project,

    • Propose an application to a public health initiative.
    • Identify the significance of the application and public health initiative.
    • Describe the target population.
    • Analyze the statistical needs assessment for the application.
    • Provide three statistics that support the need of your mHealth application.
    • Create a method to utilize natural language technology with structured and unstructured data.
    • Identify how this will be used and beneficial to your target population.
    • Include one image-based biomedical technology that could be used in your mHealth application.
    • Identify how this will be used and beneficial to your target population.
    • Discuss the data that your mHealth application will collect and the significance to the public health imitative.
