In this discussion, we will discuss the nutritional changes encountered with aging and the challenges adults face in meeting the health needs of varying age groups.

First, lets start with a question based on your opinion and what we have learned so far in past modules:

• In your opinion, what is the single biggest challenge facing older Americans today that impacts their ability to make quality food choices? How about the single biggest challenge for children? You may have witnessed this personally or in your work.

Remember the shopping trip game in Module 3? Now lets play a game that allows us to shop for a family of four, consisting of two parents, their child, and a grandparent. You will not be graded on playing the game, only on the discussion portion of this activity. Please go shopping in the game as often as youd like. See if you will be able to feed this family within budget and meet their health needs!

To play the game, go out to the Table of Contents of Module 7. Look for “Family Supermarket Shopping Trip Game.” Click on the link to open the game. Remember to return to this discussion to finish our conversation – there are a few more questions for you to answer.

• What resources can we recommend to adults who are struggling to consume a healthy diet and remain physically active they age? What factors are important to consider in proposing recommendations?
• You just found out that your community received a state grant to improve the health of older adults by improving access to resources. How should the money be spent (e.g., improving dental health, increasing family support, subsidizing health dietary purchases, etc.)? How would this help to improve an older adults health and wellness? As you discuss this together, consider the challenges and limitations older adults may face, as well as potential strengths, and what the priorities might be among your recommendations for how to spend the money.
