  • Short annotated article chart

MUST BE PEER REVIEWED, OPEN ACCESS ARTICLE AREN’T ACCEPTED.

The purpose of this assignment is to help me gauge the direction your research has taken, whether or not your sources are scholarly, how much you have prepared for the final project, and whether you are pulling relevant information from the article.

Please turn in a short annotated bibliography summarizing 5-10 scholarly peer-reviewed journal articles** related to your topic of interest (one of which can be your article used for the article review assignment).

    For each reference include:

    • APA reference/citation
    • Short summary of the article
    • Research questions/objectives/aims/hypotheses
    • Theories used or referenced (if any)
    • Participant information (age, race, SES, gender, social group, etc)
    • Note: this is important as we may be able to identify gaps in the literature based on demographics. There also might be variations in the results of the study based on demographics. For example: when I study attitudes towards interracial romantic relationships, attitudes vary greatly by gender, race, immigration status, SES, etc.
    • Short overview of methodology
    • I recognize that you may have never taken a research methods course and therefore, methods sections can be really confusing. Look for the big picture of predictors and outcomes, what they used to collect the data (i.e. surveys, interviews, secondary data, experiments)
    • Summary of Findings/main takeaways related to your topic
    • How this article is beneficial to YOUR project. How will you use it? Where will you include it?

The more articles you include here, the better prepared you will be for the next steps, and the more feedback I can provide. As you are reading articles, I recommend focusing first on the literature review and the discussion before getting into the “weeds” of the methodology and results sections. You can also use the literature review of journal articles to find other articles that you might want to read.

**Please remember that open-access articles do not fit the criterion. Please see the final project page for more information on how to identify if an article is open-access.

  • Literacy assessment

The purpose of Part 1 of this paper is to have you do your own ‘thought work’ on this topic. 1. Based on the video, identify 3 of these personal challenges/problems moving from welfare to work. 2. Next, use the library to identify 3-5 peer reviewed sources to provide additional information about the challenges you’ve identified. Be sure to provide complete citations and a reference list and hyperlinked Dols for the other sources you use in APA format. It is okay if these sources are “old”, as it is important they explore TANE effects. Because the policy was passed in 1996, there will be research published after that looking at these effects. That said, all sources you locate should be passed after 1996 to capture families affected by the TANE legislation. You may also cite Canvas content and/or the textbook as well in your paper. I recommend the Psychinfo database through the PSU library as a great place to look for articles. You can also Chat with a PSU librarian to help you find relevant sources. You may also cite Canvas content and/or the textbook as well in your paper. 3. In VisibleAl, please write a 3-4 page (excluding a cover page and reference page) paper formatted in APA style that explores insights from research on three of the personal challenges encountered as former recipients try to successfully transition from welfare to work. What we mean by a personal challenge/barrier is a characteristic of the individual that makes the successful transition from welfare to work difficult. For example, one challenge or barrier is low education-identify 3 others and describe how they operate as barriers (low education can not be one of the barriers you select). In your analysis, include both references to your scholarly sources and the video. The higher quality of your source and the better it is integrated into your paper, the more credit you will receive for bringing in outside material. Please make clear links between your research articles and the arguments you present in your paper. Please refer to the Writing Resources and APA Style Module towards the top of the Modules page in Canvas. Please have those resources guide your writing on this assignment. Specifically, please organize your paper according to the page in the module entitled The Basic Structure in College Level Writing. This includes having an introduction, substantive paragraphs, limitations or gaps in your knowledge or analysis, and conclusion. Focus on paraphrasing from your sources instead of using direct quotes. * Please write in paragraph form and not with any bullets. * When writing your literature review, please make sure you write about the studies thematically instead of study by study. Summarizing studies is one thing, but it is a much more challenging task to talk about what themes cut across studies. Here’s a source that explain thematic lit reviews. * Make sure you go into depth describing the studies you cite, including sample and research design, to provide a broader context for the findings from that study. It is important not to overgeneralize your research findings. * Be sure to include APA intext citations and an APA reference list at the end of Part 1 of your paper. Please refer to the APA Tutorial located at the bottom of the Modules page for information on citing Canvas APA style. * It is important that you include hyperlinked DOls on your reference list per APA style. DOls make it easy for those who read your work to validate your sources. Here’s information how to to cite with DOls as you move forward in this course. * Please format your paper in APA style with 1 inch margins, 12 point font, and a title page in APA style. * Edit and proofread carefully. * Excellent (8): Clearly identifies three appropriate personal barriers (excluding low education). Provides thorough, specific explanations of how each functions as a barrier to moving from welfare to work. Demonstrates strong understanding of TANE goals and policy context. * Satisfactory (4-7): Identifies three appropriate barriers with generally clear explanations, though analysis may lack depth, clarity, or specificity in places. * Minimal (0-3): Fails to clearly identify three appropriate barriers or provides minimal, inaccurate, or underdeveloped explanation. * Integration of Scholarly Sources and Specificity of Evidence (9 points) * Excellent (9): Integrates 3-5 peer-reviewed sources published after 1996. Sources are high quality and clearly relevant. Demonstrates strong specificity by describing study samples, research design, and key findings. Research is synthesized thematically rather than summarized study by study. Clear, specific links are made between research findings and the paper’s arguments. * Satisfactory (5-8): Meets minimum source requirement with generally relevant sources. Some specificity regarding study design and findings is included, though synthesis may rely partially on summary. Connections to the argument may be present but uneven. * Minimal (0-4): Fewer than required scholarly sources, weak integration, limited specificity about studies, overgeneralization of findings, or little meaningful use of peer-reviewed research. * Use of Documentary (5 points) * Excellent (5): Thoughtfully integrates specific scenes, individuals, and policy illustrations from the documentary. Clearly connects examples to the four major changes from AFDC to TANE and the goals of welfare-to-work. Demonstrates careful viewing and detailed note-taking. * Satisfactory (3-4): References the documentary with relevant examples, though connections may be somewhat general or underdeveloped. * Explore different Al models * Did you know VAl has several Al models available to help you with your assignment, each with its own algorithm and unique way of responding? Try them out to see which one works best for you. * Explore and Compare * Excellent (5): Thoughtfully integrates specific scenes, individuals, and policy illustrations from the documentary. Clearly connects examples to the four major changes from AFDC to TANE and the goals of welfare-to-work. Demonstrates careful viewing and detailed note-taking. * Satisfactory (3-4): References the documentary with relevant examples, though connections may be somewhat general or underdeveloped. * Minimal (0-2): Limited, vague, inaccurate, or no meaningful use of the documentary. * Organization and Thematic Development (5 points) * Excellent (5): Paper follows clear college-level structure including introduction, substantive thematic body paragraphs, discussion of limitations or gaps, and conclusion. Ideas flow logically and build on one another. Literature review is organized around themes rather than individual studies. * Satisfactory (3-4): Basic structure is present with identifiable sections, though organization or thematic development may be uneven. Literature review may shift between thematic synthesis and study-by-study summary. * Minimal (0-2): Weak or unclear structure. Lacks thematic organization. Ideas are disjointed or primarily summarized study-by-study without synthesis. * Writing Quality (8 points) * Excellent (8): Writing is clear, professional, and precise. Demonstrates strong specificity in explanations and avoids overgeneralization. * Paraphrasing is effective with minimal reliance on direct quotes. The student’s analytical voice is evident throughout, showing ownership of ideas and thoughtful engagement with the material. APA style is consistently correct, including title page, formatting (1-inch margins, 12-point font), accurate in-text citations, properly formatted reference list, and hyperlinked DOls. * Satisfactory (4-7): Writing is generally clear but may lack precision, depth, or consistent specificity. The student’s voice is present but somewhat muted or inconsistent. Several APA or formatting errors may appear, though core elements are * Writing Quality (8 points) * Excellent (8): Writing is clear, professional, and precise. • Parenting

Describe the four different parenting styles and their associated influences on child development. Apply this to your own experience as a child and your own general development. Provide examples of the parenting style(s) you experienced and your perception of how it influenced your development. Also, discuss the type of physical punishment (if any) that you experienced. In hindsight, do you feel your punishments were appropriate, excessive or unreasonable? Summarize the arguments against using physical punishment on children and explain your position as a parent or future parent regarding the use of physical punishment.
