EDU 215 – Abstract Assignments
For this class, you are required to write 5 abstracts of scholarly journal articles related to the same topic. You must read a different article for each of the five abstract assignments, one journal article per abstract assignment. You will be looking for professional-level information about the topics, which is indicated by 1) the level of expertise of the author and 2) by the use of other references used by that author to support his/her information. Those articles that are not supported by these criteria are not acceptable.
(Remember that you will use all these scholarly journal articles that you abstract as the references for your Family Engagement Parent Workshop paper/presentation so you will want to read and review articles from the same topic for all your abstracts. See the Family Topics in Early Childhood list on Blackboard.
Kohler, M., Christensen, L., & Kilgo, J. (2014). Fears and phobias in children and adolescents. Childhood Education,90(5), 386-389.
For children, fear often is created in their imagination instead of an occurrence that happened to them in real life. However, there are some fears that occur in children that are received from experiences. In this journal Kohler, Christensen, and Kilgo look at different articles and talk about a variety of topics that range from dealing with fears and phobias to some possible treatments and strategies that parents can do to help their children. They talk about how depending on the type of fear or phobia the treatments could vary as well as the extent of the treatment. Some children have fears and phobias revolving around the deportation of a family member, imaginary monsters, gender, age, and sex differences. Children do not believe that they will accomplish or achieve their goals.
In my opinion, I believe that this article was interesting. There was a piece of information
that I found to be interesting. According to Kohler, Christensen, and Kilgo, when they were looking
at different articles they found that Studies have shown that children are more likely to fear things
formed in their imagination than something that can actually harm them. I found this interesting
because when I think back to things I feared as a child, I often had bad dreams, it was not from an
actual experience. I believe that there are many factors that coincide with what makes a child afraid. I do believe that children fear their family or family members being deported if they are not in the
country legally. I wonder throughout the reading what treatments children could get to attempt to
get rid of fears and phobias. I thought there would be some more examples of the treatments. The
bibliography did not add or offer any additional resources
