Alternative Research Assignment: Video Assignment on Peer Reviewed Article.

Guidelines for paper. This assignment is submitted in two parts. Both parts are submitted directly to your instructor. Each part is equivalent to two hours of research credit (25 points for each part, in order to achieve a total of 50 points towards your final grade).

Part 1/Appendix C: You will upload two peer-reviewed empirical journal articles from an APA or ACA journal (see list) that has been published within the past five years. The pdf version of the two articles must be uploaded on iCollege along with your assignment. These two peer-reviewed empirical articles must be topically related to one another. In addition, you will write a review of each article, as if you were reviewing for the journal editor. To do this, please complete the worksheet, Appendix C. You just present a brief summary of the purpose of the study, the research question(s) posed or hypotheses, the sample collected, the measures, and the major findings from the study. Afterwards, you will then provide a numbered list of limitations of the article. You should be able to find all of this information in the text of the article.

Part 2/Appendix D: You will record a critical review that synthesizes your reactions to the two articles. Your video must demonstrate your analysis and comprehension of the content The video should be 5-8 minutes in length and must be a formal, professional recording of you presenting your ideas. You must appear on camera in the video. Audio-only recording will not be accepted. You may also use GSU recording studio rooms if your personal equipment does not allow video recording [; ]. Keep in mind GSU recording rooms requires booking at least 21 days in advance.

Your video must be submitted in .mp4 format in iCollege, using GSUs Send-a File system, or a view-only shared link. You should speak clearly and thoughtfully, addressing the relevance of the articles to your understanding of course concepts. You must use visual support (e.g., PowerPoint, Google Slides, Canva). Professional attire and clear audio/visual quality are required.Your video should touch on each section mentioned below:

    • Provide a general summary of the studies conducted
    • Between the two articles, identify and defend the article that makes the strongest argument and will have the most significant impact on the topic/population it is written about. Integrate information from your course into the critique of the article. You might discuss the practical significance of the research.
    • Suggestions for future research in this area, based on what you have learned in your course. This should not be a summary of what the authors suggested as recommendations for future research, but rather, your own personal suggestions for future research based on the reported findings.
    • Please use high quality audio and lighting. The video will be graded based on the quality of content and visual organization (i.e. bullet points, clear headings, graphics, transitions). You must have your camera on.
    1. Instructions for PowerPoint video
    2. Instructions for Canva videos
    • You must turn in both your video summary/analysis of the article and a PDF of the two articles (or link to the article if a PDF is not available) when you submit your work for this assignment. Any plagiarism or submitting AI-generated or fabricated articles will result in a grade of zero for the assignment and a formal notice of academic dishonesty. Always use authentic, peer-reviewed sources from APA or ACA journals as outlined.

    Part 1:

    Discussion Prompt:

    • How does your organization measure up in providing a safe and healthy environment to provide feedback, exchange ideas, and communicate effectively?
    • What would you suggest to sustain the environment (if your organization rates high) or take corrective action?
    • When responding, take into consideration the key components of the communication process, the emotionral intelligence quotient of individuals, and how technology has helped or hurt the process.

    • Effective health and safety initiatives reduce the stigma of mental health issues, reduces burnout and stress from being overworked, but most importantly shows the companys care and concern to the overall well being of their employees. A company that is all inclusive, maintains and fosters mental health accessibility ensures brand recognition, a strategic edge over the competition and the trust and loyalty of current employees and future candidates.
    • The Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (JHU/APL) is one of these companies that embraces taking care of their employees. There are open door discussions, picnics, BBQs, pot luck events and other social events during the workday for mental health and employee appreciation. These events occur randomly each month to provide a stress-free environment to mix and mingle with other peers. There is also the Central Green space that is available for anyone to enjoy the sunshine and work outside (weather permitting). This is a great way to release tension and negativity.
    • Feedback, open dialogue and an exchange of ideas is most welcome where everyone is encouraged to throw ideas, suggestions, improvements and changes to the team for thoughtful considerations. Self-awareness, self-reflection, motivations, empathy and social skills are essential to build a foundation of trust and loyalty through the communication process.
    • Unfortunately, technology has hurt the communication process since emails, texts and the Slack channel focuses on less in personal interactions. Team members can now use Microsoft Teams or Zoom instead of holding in person meetings. While this allows for team members who are offsite or work from home to attend meetings, it can be difficult to get your point across and may cause misunderstanding and miscommunication.
    • Overall JHU/APL strives to be a leading-edge company and has been in the top 50 of Best Workplaces for Innovators for the past 7 years by Fast Company.

    • In evaluating my current organization, I would rate our environment as Accomplished but evolving. We have very clear formal channels for communication, but there are areas where the integration of emotional intelligence and the right technology could be improved to create a safer feedback culture.
    • Analysis of the Environment
    • Currently, my workplace relies heavily on lean media such as email and quick instant messages for almost everything. According to Media Richness Theory, these channels are great for basic updates, but they often fail during complex feedback sessions because you cannot see a person’s face or hear their tone. This often creates noise in the Shannon Weaver model where a supervisors helpful suggestion might be misinterpreted by an employee as a harsh critique just because the text felt cold.
    • From an Emotional Intelligence or EQ standpoint, the environment feels safe, but the lack of face to face time makes Social Awareness difficult. It is hard for leaders to show empathy or gauge how a team is actually feeling when all interactions are restricted to a chat box.
    • Suggestions for Improvement
    • To sustain a healthy environment and take corrective action, I suggest the following:
    1. Prioritize Rich Media for Sensitive Topics. I recommend that all performance reviews or brainstorming sessions happen over video calls or in person. This aligns with the course goal of choosing the right platform to reduce misunderstandings.
    2. Move Toward Feedforward. Instead of just looking at past mistakes, we should use a Feedforward approach. As our lessons mention, this is proactive and focuses on future growth, which helps lower the anxiety employees feel during evaluations.
    3. Tone Checking with AI. Since technology sometimes makes our communication feel too impersonal, using tools like Microsoft Copilot could help. It can assist employees in tone checking an email before they hit send to ensure it sounds professional and supportive rather than blunt.
    • By being more intentional about which digital tools we use for specific conversations, we can build a more inclusive and transparent workplace.

    part 2:

Be sure to review the following prior to submitting your assignment:

    • Assignment Rubric
    • If you do not see the rubric, in the blue horizontal navigation bar select Course Tools, then Assignments. Select the appropriate assignment, and the rubric will be located near the bottom of the page.

This assignment aligns with the following:

  • Individual Paper

The individual paper involves analyzing a flawed instance of people management and decision making by you or others in your organizational life using the concepts and theories we learn in our course.

Specifically, this paper requires that you choose and analyze an event from your career that you now believe may have involved flawed people management and decision making by you, or others in your organization or industry. You may consider an inappropriate or unjustifiable people management approach or style (e.g., an instance of poor hiring, coaching, or training, or failure to generate buy-in in managing teams), or a decision that, among other things, attributed causation to a correlational relationship (e.g., an instance of hiring or promotion claimed to have increased revenues), a decision that involved cognitive biases (e.g., confirmation bias in hiring), and/or a decision that invoked conversations about fairness (e.g., a policy responses to the COVID-19 pandemic).

    Then, address the following:

    1. Describe the event and provide context to a flawed instance of people management and decision making.
    2. Identify the flaws that you believe were involved.
    3. Explain the reasoning and/or evidence that now leads you to suspect the flaw.
    4. Propose what you would have done differently to produce a better outcome at the time.
    5. Explain how and why you believe your proposed approach might have improved the event in question.

In developing your individual paper, you will essentially use an event from your career as case material to explicitly highlight your knowledge of and ability to apply the concepts and theories from this course to analyze a potentially flawed instance of people management and decision making, and offer solutions.

The choice about the relative weight to put on different issues, ideas, concepts, and theories in reflecting on the situation in question is yours. In evaluating your paper, I will look to see whether the concepts and theories you use are described accurately (i.e. substantively correct), applied appropriately (i.e. fit the context you describe), and most relevant to the situation (i.e. did you pick the theories and concepts that best illuminate the situation).

Here are some additional tips you may consider in developing your paper:

    1. Applying more theories is generally better than applying fewer theories. There are, however, two caveats: you need enough rich descriptive material about your chosen issue, and you need to cover each theory or concept thoroughly enough that convinces the audience that you know how to apply it. Theories that are covered superficially will not receive much credit.
    2. Notice that this paper must be graded. It is easy to get carried away with an interesting issue and forget that this is also a way to test your knowledge of and ability to apply the course material.
    3. Remember to explicitly mention and engage course concepts and theories. Drawing explicit links between the concepts you identify and the paper material is important.
    4. It may be useful to develop a comparative angle in the project. For example, you may compare the organizations performance before and after the situation or decision in question.
    5. When facing a choice as to whether to narrow your paper to a more focused topic, balance the benefits of this strategy in terms of richness, thoroughness and completeness with the costs of reduced data availability. Choose the narrowest possible issue that offers sufficient data and allows you to describe and integrate a discussion on people management.

Please keep the length of the paper to 8-12 pages of text (plus 1-2 pages of exhibits if needed). Please use double spacing, 12-point font, and 1-inch margins.

    Rubric:

    1. Originality in the Choice of the Event and Managerial Context (out of 10)
    2. Specificity of the Analysis of the Flawed People Management and Decision Making (out of 35)
    3. Quality of the Proposed People Management and Decision Remake (out of 25)
    4. Clarity in Writing (out of 20)
    5. Novelty (out of 10)
  • Client Research Plan

    My client is TikTok

Your client research report is the first part of your final project for this course.

Identify a product, idea, announcement or cause that is relevant to the mission of your client organization and that can serve as the basis for a media relations plan. For example, you may represent a nonprofit looking to bring attention to climate change. A public health agency announcing new medical research. Or an auto company unveiling a new line of electric vehicles.

Write a paper no longer than 10 pages with information about your client and the topic at the center of your media relations plan. The paper should be double spaced and written in 12-point font. Include a single page of references/citations in APA style (2 points).

The paper should contain the following information:

    1. Essential information about your client organization (2 points)

    • What is its mission?
    • What does it do to achieve that mission? (i.e. sell products, advocacy work, etc.)
    • Where is it located or does it operate?
    • Who are its primary customers or what population does it serve?
    • What is important to know about its history and values?

    2. The topic or product that will be the focus of your media relations plan (2 points)

    • What is new or interesting about it?
    • Why is it important or relevant now?
    • Why else does it deserve attention from the press and public?
    • What is the main message your organization wants to spread?

    3. The objective(s) you want to accomplish (3 points)

    • How does this topic or product fit into your organizations larger mission?
    • Why is this significant to your organizations future?
    • Why is this important to your customers or the population you serve?
    • How does your message support the objective(s) you have identified?

    4. Understand your target audience (4 points)

    • What is the audience you want to reach with your message? Describe them and their demographics.
    • Why is that audience relevant or important to your organization?
    • What news outlets is this audience likely to consume?
    • Why is the press necessary to reach your target audience?

    5. Media analysis of your organization (6 points)

    • What media outlets currently cover your organization?
    • What stories have been written about your organization in the last 1-3 years? (Identify at least 5-7 stories from multiple outlets.)
    • Summarize the news coverage your organization has received in the last 1-3 years. How has the press described or characterized your organization and its activities?
    • What spokespeople from your organization have appeared in the press?
    • Summarize the response your organization has had to that news coverage based on statements, quotes and press releases. How would you describe or characterize your organizations message?

    6. Media analysis of your topic/product (6 points)

    • What stories have been written about the topic or product? These may or may not involve your organization directly. (Identify at least 5-7 stories from multiple outlets)
    • How has the press described or characterized it?
    • What is the medias current framing?

The client research paper is worth 25 points total. To receive full points, your paper must contain all of the above information. It must rely on multiple sources, such as the organizations website and reports, news articles, market research, etc. The paper must also be well-written, well-organized and only contain your original work. You may not use artificial intelligence tools for this assignment.

  • Case Study

Unit VII Case Study In your textbook, review CASE 1: Spanning the Globe (which was part of your reading assignment on page 290). After reading this case study, in a minimum of a two-page paper, write a narrative that answers the following questions.

    1. Freds comment to Eric could easily be frustration on his part but also considered a threat to sabotage Erics efforts to select qualified engineers to take the assignment to Mexico. What would you do, and why?

    2. Fred has been a valuable employee, exceling in his international assignment, but he now is experiencing possible burnout and frustration over the extension of the assignment beyond the original agreements. A major reason for the delay is that he did not effectively get the job done because of lengthy delays stemming from his hesitation to hand things over to host country engineers. He was also ineffective in adapting to host country officials and regulations. How would you address this with Fred?

    3. Eric recognizes that Juanita Roberto, vice president of HR, is pushing for budget reductions and is advocating a do more-with-less philosophy in the expatriate program. This includes changing pre-departure training for employees and family members. Erics current plan is effective, but he recognizes that a serious deficiency is the language training; it wil require an increase rather than a decrease in spending. The language training is vital to success. How should Eric convince Juanita of the importance of investing in better language training for expatriates?

    4. What would be your plan of action to address each of the above issues?

You must use at least two peer-reviewed articles and the textbook to support your paper. Al sources used must have citations and references properly formatted in APA style. APA formatting is otherwise not required.
