The Leader I Am or Aspire to BeA Self-Reflection

For this Discussion, you are asked to review the subject matter of the past 3 weeks on leadership theories and frameworks and apply these to yourself using the process of self-reflection.

    Resources

Review the Learning Resources from Week 1 as a refresher on the difference between being a leader and a manger.

Review the Learning Resources from Week 2 and Week 3 on the various frameworks and styles of leadership.

    To prepare for this Discussion:

You should first engage in reflection. Self-reflection is an important skill in business, especially for a leader or an aspiring leader. There are a number of different models of reflection that can be utilized; however, one of the more commonly used models is the 5R Framework for Reflection (Bain, et al., 2002), which focuses on five defined stages of reflection: reporting, responding, relating, reasoning, and reconstructing. Using this framework will enable you to produce a critically engaging reflection based on your experiences. Refer to the following table for more information about the framework:

    5R Stages, Description, Guidelines

Reporting, A brief descriptive account of the situation/topic, What happened, what the situation/topic is

Responding, Your emotional/personal response to the situation/topic, Your observations, feelings, questions about the situation/topic

Relating, Personal and theoretical understandings relevant to the situation/topic, Making the connections between the situation/topic and your experience, skills, knowledge, and understanding

Reasoning, Your explanation of the situation/topic, Explaining the situation/topic in terms of the significant factors, relevant theories, and experiences

Reconstruction, Drawing conclusions and developing a future actionable plan, Your deeper level of understanding about the situation/topic that is used to reframe or reconstruct your future practice and further develop your understanding of professional practice (application)

In these resources, you will explore the authoritarian leadership style. Authoritarian leaders retain control and power. They usually make decisions without relying on (or in some cases even considering) other peoples opinions. The term authoritarian can stir mixed feelings for many people, but as you explore this topic, try to keep an open mind. Consider instances where this leadership style could be beneficial in leading people, as well as where it could be detrimental to influencing followers.

Participative leadership is demonstrated when leaders actively involve followers in decision-making processes. In this type of democratic environment, it is less likely for employees to be given their orders from the top and more likely to have a say. Have you even been on a team that was either led by a participative leader or led by someone who was the complete opposite? As you explore these resources, consider the benefits and challenges to this leadership style.

Delegative leaders often leave the details to the team, taking their hands off of the day-to-day minutia and other burdens. Followers can make decisions that would typically belong to the manager. As your review these resources, think about situations that would benefit from this style of leadership, as well as what sort of challenges this type of leadership style could present. Are there certain industries or professions in which this type of leadership style would be more appropriate than others?

  • Discussion Post 1&2

    Hi Class,

Qualitative research designs provide a strategic framework for exploring and understanding the complex meanings individuals or groups ascribe to social or human problems. These designs are characterized by their inductive and flexible nature, relying on non-numerical data like interviews and observations collected in naturalistic settings.

Common designs include phenomenology used to study lived experiences, ethnography to discover cultural patterns, and grounded theory to develop new theoretical models from data. Ultimately, these designs aim to provide rich, “thick” descriptions that uncover the nuances of human behavior rather than measuring statistical frequency.

    Dr. Blum

    PEER RESPONSE 2

    Hi Class,

Qualitative research designs are crucial for doctoral students because they provide the structured frameworks needed to explore complex, context-dependent questions about human experiences and social phenomena. By selecting an appropriate design such as phenomenology, case study, grounded theory, ethnography, or narrative inquiry, doctoral researchers can align their methods with their research purpose and questions, ensuring coherence and credibility in their studies. These designs guide data collection, analysis, and interpretation, allowing students to generate rich, meaningful insights that go beyond surface-level descriptions. Understanding qualitative designs also cultivates methodological rigor, ethical sensitivity, and reflexivity are key qualities that prepare doctoral students to contribute original, theory-informed, and practice-relevant knowledge to their fields.

    Dr. Blum

    Assignment

an Evaluation of Leadership for House, Hearth and Home Part 1

Over the next 2 weeks, you will examine a case study that demonstrates the effectiveness of different leadership approaches of two individuals in a company and will provide to the business owner/general manager a report that details your observations and recommendations. This case provides an opportunity to evaluate and contrast different leadership styles and theories in a real-world context.

    Scenario

The owner/general manager of House, Hearth and Home, a large retail hardware, furniture, and building center, is facing a dilemma regarding the leadership effectiveness of his long-time yard manager and that of a newly hired assistant manager. The owner has hired you as a consultant and has asked you to investigate and then report your findings and recommendations on how he should address this situation.

For this weeks Assignment, you will prepare a business report to the company owner/GM that addresses the leadership theory or framework that Dan Boyd and Wesley Simpson each employ, the differences in their leadership style, along with a discussion on which approach you feel is more effective for this companys situation and why. Be sure to provide specific examples from the case and relevant citations from the Learning Resources, the library, and/or other credible, appropriate academic sources to substantiate and validate your position. Water Cooler Discussion on Leadership Styles

The water cooler has become a symbol in business life. Like any common gathering place in an office slightly removed from the cubicles and desks, the water cooler is a place to share information, both casual and vital, and to build networks with colleagues with whom you do not necessarily interact on a daily basis. The water cooler discussion activity this week will help you get into the practice of looking beyond your metaphorical cubicle to seek out topical news stories and ideas and analyze them with your Instructor and colleagues. Familiarity with current trends, topics, and events is an important element of your participation and success in the business world and in your MBA program.

    • Navigate to the Business Source Complete database. For more information about finding a specific database, access the following resource:
    • Walden University. (n.d.).
    • Research the Business Source Complete database in the Walden Library for interesting and compelling articles on the topic of leadership styles. There are many different leadership styles from which to choose. Here are some common leadership styles that you can use as key words in your search in the library: democratic leadership, participative leadership, laissez-faire leadership, charismatic leadership, authoritarian leadership, and autocratic leadership. For more information about setting up your database search, access the following resource:
    • Walden University. (n.d.). .
    • Select an article from the library that resonates with you. You need to access the full text of the article, and it should be more than 2 pages in length. Do not worry if the article you select has a complicated research design (i.e., describes complex quantitative research techniques), as usually the introduction and summary conclusion pages have interesting concepts and findings to discuss.

Note: Most of the articles you find in Business Source Complete will provide a PDF of the article. For the water cooler activity, it is preferable to attach the PDF of the article to your post. If the article you find in Business Source Complete only provides the full text as an HTML file, paste the HTML file in a Word document and attach it to your post. For more information about saving an article as a PDF, access the following resource:

    • Walden University. (n.d.).

Post your analysis of your selected library article as follows:

    • Provide the author(s) and title of the article on leadership style(s) that you found interesting. Include the article as an attachment to your post (either as a PDF or Word document, as previously indicated).
    • In your own words, provide a brief analysis of what the article says about leadership style(s) in business, including an explanation of why you chose the article, and what you learned from it, relative to what you have studied throughout the course to date.
