    Ethical Values in Human Services

This assignment assesses the following Course Outcome:

HN501-2: Apply ethics, values, and self-care strategies to professional practice and human services delivery.

Congratulations! You were selected for an interview for your dream job. For the interview, you must discuss a potential ethical dilemma that could arise from your work with children and families. You will be presented with a case example and will need to identify the ethical dilemma according to the ethical standards set forth by the National Organization for Human Services Professionals. You will need to refer to the as a guide in your response.

Begin by selecting from one of the following ethical dilemmas:

    Case A

You are a human services professional working in an elementary school providing psychoeducational workshops for a group of 6th grade girls. One of the girls has been referred to you because of absences and tardiness, and because it appears she has been cutting. The student did not show up for the first three appointments but finally kept the fourth appointment. She is tentative and withdrawn. She asks if she can trust you to tell you a secret and asks that you not tell anyone else. You realize that her help-seeking is in a very tentative, fragile state, and you would like to increase her trust with you and the likelihood that she will engage in services. You explain confidentiality to her, and she discloses that she is being sexually abused by her stepfather. She tells you that if you tell anyone, she will get beaten by her stepfather as he has threatened to do this.

    Case B

You work for a domestic violence program for teens and provide services for a perpetrator program where clients are mandated as a condition of probation. One weekend you are out with colleagues at happy hour, and a friend introduces you to someone they know at the bar. You strike up a conversation, and this person tells you about the troubles their teenage daughter has been experiencing since she started dating this young man. They tell you about an incident that happened 2 weeks ago, when their daughter came home upset that she was being pressured to report her every move to her boyfriend. As the conversation continues, you realize she is referring to a young man who is a member in your group.

    Case C

You are a human services student intern at a child welfare agency. You are shadowing your field instructor, who has been assigned to supervise a visit between a child on their caseload and their parents. During the visit, the child says to her parents that the foster parent has been mean to them. When the parents prompt the child to say more, your field instructor interrupts the parents and tells them to focus on the visit with the child and not to worry about what is happening with the foster parent. The field instructor ensures the parents that they will follow up with the foster parent. Upon your return to the agency, the field instructor turns to you and says, Can you believe those parents? They are trying to manipulate the child into saying the foster parent is mistreating her.

    Assignment Directions

Based on the case you selected, please respond to the following:

    • What is the ethical dilemma based on the National Organization of Human Services Professional standards?
    • Why is this a problem/challenge?
    • Who would be the best person to consult in this situation?
    • How would you address this ethical dilemma?
    • What challenges could work with this child and family pose for you as a human services professional?
    • What personal values or self-bias could potentially impact your ability to work effectively with this child and family?
    • What self-care strategies would you practice responding to the ethical dilemmas, conflicting values, and self-bias?

Consider this scenario: your agency is being evaluated by a governing body. Client success is one key element being evaluated by the governing body. In your agency, out of 200 clients seen in the last two years, 85 (or 42.5%) dropped out within the first five weeks of participation. Of the remaining 115 clients, only 35% (40 clients) completed all their goals, and 65% (75 clients) only completed some of their goals.

In your initial post, address the following questions:

    • What do you believe is the most accurate and ethical representation of success over the past two years for this agency to report to the governing body?
    • Support your reasoning with scholarly research.

In responding to two of your peers, discuss a different viewpoint than what they posted. Support your view with scholarly research.

For each module, answer the initial question in 1-2 paragraphs. Then reply to each of the provided peer posts in 1-2 paragraphs.

    Mod 4

    1. Share a poem or story that has significant meaning for you. In 1-2 paragraphs, how could your poem or story be used in a helping context?
    2. In -12 paragraphs respond to the following post:

    Malia Swary wrote

“One story that has great significance to me is Shel Silverstein’s The Giving Tree. The tree gives everything it has to the boy it loves, showing unconditional care and generosity. I came to understand that the story also demonstrates the significance of balance in relationships and knowing your limits. In a helping context, this story could be used to discuss boundaries and self-care. A counselor could share it with someone who tends to prioritize others all the time, helping them think about how to give to others while still taking care of themselves. Its a way to reflect on healthy relationships and personal limits in a simple, relatable way”

    Mod 5

    1. What kinds of resistant client behavior will most intimidate you? What is it about these specific resistant behaviors that you find particularly difficult? How do you plan to deal with resistant clients?
    2. In -12 paragraphs respond to the following post:

    Desiree Downer wrote

“The resistant behaviors that would probably intimidate me most are hostility, sarcasm, chronic silence, and clients who intellectualize everything. Those are hard because they can trigger self-doubt, make it unclear how to move forward, or feel like were circling the real issue without touching it.

I think those behaviors are tough mainly because they test my confidence and patience, and its easy to feel ineffective or take things personally if Im not careful.

To deal with resistant clients, Id try to see resistance as communication instead of a problem. Id name what Im noticing, stay curious rather than defensive, and focus on building trust over forcing progress. Id also keep checking my own reactions and use supervision when I feel stuck.”

    Mod 6

    1. What are some factors contributing to “burnout?” How does burnout happen? How can you avoid this kind of job exhaustion? Include a personal enjoyment lists, and ways these things might effectively support your future human service work.
    2. In -12 paragraphs respond to the following post:

    Leah Waters wrote

“A couple of things that can contribute to burnout are being understaffed, underappreciated, and not having a good work-life balance. Burnout happens when you have too much on your plate, constantly running, and in the end, becoming so exhausted that you can become physically sick. Personally, I have been able to avoid this in my current workplace, even though it is a high-stress position, by trying to keep a positive outlook on everything. If I find myself focusing on the negative things, I do a mental reset. I speak it outloud and then I choose to change it. I also live a fast-paced, busy life with my kids, and I go to school, and I just make sure I find time for myself. I do this by usually allowing myself an hour of me time before bed. I either read, watch tv, scroll social media, or I recently took up cross-stitch. These are just things to get my mind off the chaos and madness.”

Case Study: Home-Based Nonprofit Daycare Center

Sally Smith is a teacher by trade and has owned and operated several daycare centers.

She has always wanted to start a nonprofit daycare to offer a safe place for the children of working unhoused or indigent mothers.

She converted the garage and first floor of her home into a daycare, obtained the necessary certifications, and opened the doors. She formed a 501(c)(3) entity with three officers, including Sally. Her other officers are her aunt Penny Page and her friend Jane Johnson, and they have had one board meeting. Sally is often short on donations and supplies, so she will often loan paper products and food from her personal pantry to assist the daycare.

Occasionally, she has to borrow back some supplies when she runs short herself. Sally is pleased with the number of donations of supplies and clothes she has been receiving from friends and church members, and last week she solicited contributions from the community and raised $2,000. One of her church members mentioned something about registration required for solicitations, but she has not had a chance to look into it yet.

Sally opened a bank account for the daycare but is so busy that she hasn’t prepared a budget or set up a bookkeeping system. Sally plans to evaluate her need for insurance. Several people have expressed an interest in her cause, and she plans to enlist them, as well as some friends and church members, to serve on her board once she gets a chance to get organized.
