  • Journal Entry 2: Metaphors

Metaphors are a very useful tool for crafting your own intellectual narrative and articulating your ideas and experiences to others. We will use them in the weeks to come.

For this weeks Journal Entry, reflect on the use of metaphors as you respond to the following question/prompts:

    1. The reading claims that, Todays graduates will be entering not a career that lasts a lifetime, but a lifetime of multiple careers. How should you prepare academically for this new reality?
    2. Based on your reading of the chapters, how will you personally explain IDS to your family and friends?
    3. The reading highlights Abraham Maslows claim that If the only tool you have is a hammer, you tend to see every problem as a nail. What does this metaphor mean to you? Do you think its a helpful metaphor? Why or why not?
    4. Develop an original metaphor of your own for what Interdisciplinary Studies is and/or what IDS majors do. Try to extend your metaphor into a paragraph, explaining why it suits the concept of Interdisciplinary Studies.
