  • Discussion: How effective are NGOs in impacting global devel…

Take a look at these NGOs:

    • Fair Labor Association – www. fairlabor.org
    • Covalence – www. covalence.ch/
    • Business and Human rights resource Centre –
    • RESAMA, Red Sudamericana para las Migraciones Ambientales – www. resama.org

I’d like you to practice some comparative website analysis.

Go on the website of two of these NGOs. First, scan the website to figure out the organization’s goals. Then, how does the organization propose to attain them? From an analysis of their websites ONLY, briefly compare and contrast their strategies to achieve these goals. How effective do you think they are?

For example, I think the NGO “United Students Against Sweatshops” is probably pretty lame. Why? Their goals are pretty lofty, yet…what resources can group of college students marshall? Do NGOs have the power to initiate and bring about change? Especially to fight against sovereign governments and/or corporations?

Remember, I’m looking for you to create different paragraphs as you develop an argument. Read what others have posted and develop your essay based on the arguments so far.

Then be sure to go back and find posts with which you disagree and gently offer suggestions or criticisms. That can advance the discussion for the next person.

  • The French Revolution: Civic Nationalism Vs. Integral Nation…

Final Term Paper for History of the Modern Era

    TOPIC: The French Revolution

The French Revolution laid the foundations of civic nationalism, grounded in citizenship, equality before the law, and popular sovereignty.

In reaction to both the French Revolution and the very idea of democratic nationalism, a different model emerged: integral nationalism, which later became one of the ideological pillars of fascism and National Socialism.

Drawing on the lectures and the assigned readings, explain the main principles of these two contrasting conceptions of nationalism and analyze how they differ in their understanding of the nation, citizenship, and political authority.

All components of the food chain, from food production through food processing, to retailing and distribution to consumption and waste are impacted by accelerated climate variability. In this short paper (6-7 pages, double-space, with descriptive title, page numbers, robust sources and possible diagrams) pick a food item or crop and explore its supply chain. Identify its source (organism and geographic origin) and its consumers. How might its availability be impacted (or not) by the twin forces of globalization and climate change? What impact do environmental, social and economic considerations have on the product? Be sure to properly use and cite your sources.

Present your argument (your thesis), develop it, and support it with evidence from your sources (be sure to include academically rigorous sources along with any more popular sources).
