    You must use the rubric to direct the creation of your submission because it provides detailed criteria that will be used to evaluate your work. Each requirement below may be evaluated by more than one rubric aspect. The rubric aspect titles may contain hyperlinks to relevant portions of the course.

    Summary of Key Tasks

    1. Choose a character from the Ramayana that interests you.
    2. Post and cite three brief passages that reveal something about the character.
    3. Create a playlist of three songs for this character, listing the artist, song, album, and release year (provide links to lyrics if available).
    4. Thoroughly explain your choices from the text and for the playlist.
    5. Respond to at least two classmates’ posts.

    Task

    In 2-3 well-developed paragraphs discuss the topic listed below. After you have posted to the discussion, respond in detail to the posts of at least two classmates.

    Begin by carefully reading The Ramayana and the Unit 2 content.

    Part 1

    Select a character from the Ramayana that you find particularly interesting. Find three short passages in the epic (of a sentence or two) that reveal something significant about this character. Type or copy and paste them into your post (include in-text citations to the text in this course in MLA format). Then create a playlist of three songs for the character. List the artist, song, album, and year it was released. You may also post links to the lyrics pages for your playlist (from a safe website like ).

    Part 2

    After you have created your playlist, provide a thorough explanation of why you chose specific quotations from the text and songs in the playlist you’ve created.

    Part 3

    Respond in detail to the posts of at least two classmates.

    Grading Criteria

    This activity may use a different grading rubric than what is used in other activities. Be sure to check the rubric before starting.

    MLA-formatted parenthetical citations are required for all sources, including the texts provided in this course. Citations should include the authors last name (first reference) and the page number(s) for prose or the line number(s) for poems. A Works Cited-style entry is not required for discussions, (all drop-box assignments do require a Works Cited page), but if included, your instructor may provide feedback to correct formatting issues.

    4. Using AI, what is the potential target market (define in terms of demographics, geographics and lifestyle segments).

    Purpose

    This assignment allows students to explore themes in the epic Gilgamesh by writing a hypothetical letter to the character Gilgamesh proposing the creation of a business or organization in the city of Uruk. Students will draw on their own interests and expertise to solve a problem or serve a need they identify in the city, based on evidence found within the text.

    Skills to Acquire

    Students will develop analytical, persuasive writing, and critical thinking skills, needed in both academic and career endeavors, while learning to integrate textual evidence into a structured argument. Two of these skills are to:

    • LO1: Analyze themes and ideas pertinent to World Literature from ancient times through the early-modern period.
    • LO2: Demonstrate the ability to compare, contrast and understand diverse literary texts, authors, and genres.

    Tasks

    After carefully reading the materials in this unit and completing the quiz and discussion, respond thoughtfully to the prompts below with a letter and short analysis in a minimum of 750 words.

    Planning Your Work

    Epics are known for richness and detail of the worlds they depict, and Gilgamesh is no exception. Imagine you are tasked with providing a service or creating a business or organization in the world of Gilgamesh using skills and knowledge from your field of study, current or previous job, extracurriculars, or volunteer work. What need would you address or what problem would you solve within the epic’s world and in Uruk, in particular? How would you go about doing so? Choose one of the following that you can connect to the epic of Gilgamesh in some way:

    • Your actual major or a field of study you’re considering
    • A job you currently have or previously had
    • An extracurricular activity you take part in (volunteer work, a sport, a hobby, a social or religious group, etc.)

    Part One

    Write a letter to King Gilgamesh proposing the business, service unit, or organization you would like to create. This should be based on and relate to your actual life, skills, and/or interests that you chose from in the planning stage above. Provide and cite evidence from the text showing that your venture is needed; specify the resources you will contribute and those the city must supply; and showcase your credentials to lead this project. Keep your audience in mind to get your project approved!

    Part Two

    Write a brief paragraph of 3-4 sentences reflecting upon your likelihood of success in convincing King Gilgamesh to support your endeavor.

    Part Three

    Support your claims with quotations from the course materials. Use in-text citations in MLA format for the quotations, and be sure to include page numbers from the text included in this course. Remember to include a Works Cited page.

    Submission Format

    While your submission is primarily in letter form with a short paragraph following the letter, be sure to submit your assignment in MLA format: including margins, MLA heading (your name, instructor’s name, course, and date), title, double-spacing, parenthetical citations, and a Works Cited page.

    Begin by carefully reading Gilgamesh and the Unit 1 content.

    This discussion aligns with Learning Outcomes 2 and 3.

    Summary of Key Tasks

    1. Read and annotate Gilgamesh, and choose one reference to study further.
    2. Post and cite the quotation from the text in this unit where you found the reference.
    3. Find or create a related image, video, or audio clip. Provide information on your source(s).
    4. Explain the reference in your own words
    5. Connect the reference to the epic’s original time, place, and culture, including at least two reputable sources with links.
    6. Answer: How does this reference enhance your understanding of the text and its context?
    7. Pose a question for further study.
    8. Respond to two classmates’ posts.

    Task

    In 2-3 well-developed paragraphs, (minimum 350 words), discuss the topic listed below. Support your analysis by including specific references to passages from the text. After you have posted to the discussion, respond in detail to the posts of at least two other classmates.

    Begin by carefully reading Gilgamesh and the Unit 1 content.

    For this discussion, you are to identify a point of interest in the text of the epic, Gilgamesh, and provide your classmates with context that helps you and your fellow students better understand what you are reading. An is included above this discussion (but be sure to choose a reference from Gilgamesh rather than The Shahnameh!).

    Part 1

    Start with a close and careful reading of the epic, annotating interesting historical, geographical, or cultural references in the text as you read. Next, choose one particular reference you find interesting and would like to learn more about. Type or copy the quotation where you found the reference into the beginning of your discussion post. Be sure to include an in-text citation.

    Part 2

    Find or create and provide in your post a visual or audio element that relates to the reference you have chosen. If you locate one online, identify what it is and provide a link to the webpage it came from. If you yourself create it, please indicate that.

    Part 3

    Provide context that is, more details about your point of interest. Go beyond the text and do some research. In your own words, explain more about your topic in a way that will help other readers. Include links to at least two strong, reputable sources that you find valuable. In your research, be sure to answer the question: “How does the historical, geographical, or cultural reference or artifact connect the epic to its original time, place, and culture, and how does this enhance your understanding of the text within its historical context and literary genre (the epics)?”

    Part 4

    Now that your own knowledge has expanded, pose a significant question for further consideration about a character or a plot point from this text in relation to your reference. If you had more time, where would you go next in your study of Gilgamesh? You do not have to answer your own question; just include it at the end of your post.

    Part 5

    Respond thoughtfully to the posts of at least two of your classmates (minimum of 60 words for each reply). All of you together are building your shared knowledge about this epic.
