Assignment overview In this assignment, you are invited to share your personal context and motivations for studying law, together with an outline of how you intend to integrate your studies in your personal or career aspirations. In 2021, the Law Council of Australia (LCA), through The Lawyer Project, carefully scrutinised the legal sector and in particular the contributions that it makes to the social, economic and political health of the nation. The Lawyer Project Report articulated five categories of contribution and examined how the legal sector makes contributions in those areas. The categories explored in the Report are: Contribution to the Australian economy; Contribution to the administration of justice; Contribution in times of emergency; Contributions to public policy; and Social and community contribution. Please use your research skills to find the full report from the LCAs The Lawyer Project. By reference to the contribution categories articulated in that Report, you are invited to share your personal context and motivations for studying law, together with an outline of how you intend to integrate your studies in your personal or career aspirations. In preparing your reflection, you may like to consider and respond to the following questions: Do any of the categories in The Lawyer Project Report personally resonate with you and your aspirations? What previous experience or background do you bring to your studies that shape the particular contributions you would like to make? Why is this personally important to you? Have any particular events prompted you to undertake legal studies? What research have you conducted into potential career pathways and why do those pathways appeal to you? Your reflection must be supported by some research and relevant sources. • CASE BRIEF: Mapp v Ohio, 367 US 643 (1961)

Throughout the semester, students will be required to read, analyze, and draft case briefs. These will be based on mostly US Supreme Court cases and deal with issues pertaining to subject matter from the textbook. Full or edited case opinions will be provided. Case briefs tend to follow a similar framework (as seen below in the template provided). Please focus on the constitutional/legal questions and the Court’s analysis; facts are important but HOW the law is applied proves to be more compelling.

Full and accurate citations for the court case you use are REQUIRED, including any other formal sources provided.

Points will be deducted if no source is cited, or the citation is inaccurate. [Due @ 11.59 PM]

The following discussion comes from your Week 7 readings. Outside research to address these issues is required. Use the online library for additional sources of information and research. In addition, I recommend utilizing the Legal Studies Program Guide. There are some acts that are considered to be criminal in nature based on the likelihood of creating a disturbance to the peace or creating a public nuisance. Other acts are believed to infringe on public morality. Some examples of such acts include, but are not limited to, solicitation, obscenity and prostitution. 1) Do you agree that prostitution should be illegal? Why or why not? What are the arguments for and against the legalization of prostitution? 2) Prostitution is legal in many other countries. Research the relevant law in one of these countries and include it in your response to support your position.
