  • LeadershipSession 8 Journal

Prompt: Recall a personal experience in which something went wrong as a result of miscommunication. Using elements commonly employed in communication models (e.g., sender, feedback, noise), map out what happened and identify what went wrong. Upon further reflection, what can you do to reduce the chances of being involved in similar miscommunications in the future?

  • Discussion Board: Mentoring

In this course, the discussion board functions differently from those in your other classes. Instead of providing specific topics, I encourage you to generate discussion points based on the readings and engage with your peers. Think of the discussion board as a virtual classroom where I ask, “What are your thoughts on this week’s reading? What do you want to discuss?” Your posts should reflect your answers to these questions.

Active participation in the discussion forums is crucial for this online class. Your involvement will be graded on a scale from 0 to 10 points per reading, emphasizing the importance of dialogue over monologue.

To earn full credit, you must post at least three times: an initial post reacting to the reading, followed by two responses to your classmates’ posts. Your contributions should be relevant, substantive, and demonstrate engagement with the reading. When responding to others, aim to provoke further thought through questions or challenges rather than simply agreeing.

While there is no strict word count, posts under 250 words are unlikely to receive full credit because it is challenging to demonstrate thorough engagement with the material in such a brief post. I am looking for evidence of deep reflection on the material.

Possible questions to answer this week

    • Have you ever been involved in a mentoring relationship either as a mentor or a mentee? Describe your experience.
    • What do you believe are the key benefits of mentoring for both the mentor and the mentee?
    • How can organizations foster effective mentoring programs?

Primary Post (Due Friday by 11:59 p.m.)

    • Is submitted by the specified deadline

Two Reply Posts (Due Sunday at 11:59 p.m.)

To receive full points, reply posts should:

    • Thoughtfully engage with the content of two classmates’ primary posts
    • Focus on the analysis presented by your classmates, rather than introducing new personal experiences
    • Be well-written, adhering to standard grammar, spelling, and punctuation rules

    Introduction to Leadership (MAL 5301)

Engaging the Material (ETM) Exercise, Week 7

    Four Archetypes of Companies

Michels and Murphy (2021) argue that the companies they studied can be categorized into four distinct archetypal groups.

    1. Detailed Explanation of Each Archetype: Provide a comprehensive description of each archetype identified by Michels and Murphy.
    2. Identify Your Organization’s Archetype: Choose the archetype that best matches your current workplace. Justify your choice with specific examples and reasons.

    Kotter’s Eight-Step Change Management Framework

Kotter (2007) outlines an eight-step process for effectively managing change, highlighting the common pitfalls at each stage.

    1. Summarize Kotter’s Eight Steps and Associated Risks: Paraphrase Kotter’s eight steps for successful change management, and detail the key mistakes to avoid at each stage.

    Addressing Resistance to Change

Kotter and Schlesinger (2008) further examine the issue of resistance to change and provide strategies to manage it.

    1. Explain Resistance to Change and Management Strategies: Discuss the reasons behind resistance to change as explained by Kotter and Schlesinger, and describe how leaders can effectively manage this resistance.

    Challenges of Change Management Recommendations

The articles present broad recommendations for managing change, which may appear vague due to the complex and dynamic nature of organizational change. Change management must be tailored to the specific context of each organization, considering its unique culture, structure, and external environment. This ambiguity requires leaders to develop critical thinking and adaptability, which are essential skills for effectively navigating change.

  • Leads Question

Objective: Write a paper analyzing a leader known for their ethical conduct. Discuss the principles they follow, their impact on the organization, and the outcomes of their ethical leadership practices.

In analyzing your experience, focus on how you were supervised or led, not how you supervised or led others. It does not matter whether you had a positive or negative job experience and you may discuss both successful and unsuccessful aspects of the leadership to which you were subjected. Quality papers will provide 1) a synthesis of the various leadership concepts studied in the course into a single comprehensive analysis; and 2) what impact the leadership you experienced had on your performance in that job.

    Some advice:

    • Remember this exercise will be graded. It is easy to get carried away telling your story and forget that you are writing about leadership concepts and their relationship to your own personal experience with leadership in your identified job.
    • Make certain you explore your personal experience in the job. Do not write in some generic manner about other peoples experience in similar positions.
    • You may find it useful to develop a comparative angle in the paper, such as comparing how your experience varied between two different tasks, or comparing your job before and after a change in your supervisor or the company structure.
    • Do not simply drop in a few theories or concepts without explaining how they relate to your job experience.
    • Do not focus only on your favorite issue or concept. Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the course material.
    • Cite your references and write using the APA (latest edition)form.

The paper should be typed (double-spaced) in 12 point font and 5 to 7 of content pages in length. You must be thoughtful in selecting the issues and concepts around which you build your paper, while at the same time concise in your writing to meet the requirements of the assignment. Begin working on this early so you can avoid the end-of-semester crunch.

    Authentic Leadership

    1. Reflect on Authentic Leadership: Based on Northouse (2022) Chapter 9 on Authentic Leadership, identify and describe the four components of authentic leadership. How can these components help leaders avoid common decision-making errors? Provide a real-life example of an authentic leader who demonstrates these components.

    Servant Leadership

Application of Servant Leadership: Drawing from Northouse (2022) Chapter 10 on Servant Leadership, discuss how the principles of servant leadership can influence decision-making processes in a leadership role. Specifically, how can the focus on serving others help leaders overcome obstacles to effective decision-making? Illustrate your answer with an example from your own experience or a well-known leader.

    Adaptive Leadership

    1. Adaptive Leadership in Practice: Considering the principles of Adaptive Leadership as discussed in “Heifitz, Adaptive Leadership,” analyze a situation where adaptive leadership was necessary to navigate a complex challenge.
