  • Discussion Board: Self Leadership

In this course, the discussion board functions differently from those in your other classes. Instead of providing specific topics, I encourage you to generate discussion points based on the readings and engage with your peers. Think of the discussion board as a virtual classroom where I ask, “What are your thoughts on this week’s reading? What do you want to discuss?” Your posts should reflect your answers to these questions.

Active participation in the discussion forums is crucial for this online class. Your involvement will be graded on a scale from 0 to 10 points per reading, emphasizing the importance of dialogue over monologue.

To earn full credit, you must post at least three times: an initial post reacting to the reading, followed by two responses to your classmates’ posts. Your contributions should be relevant, substantive, and demonstrate engagement with the reading. When responding to others, aim to provoke further thought through questions or challenges rather than simply agreeing.

While there is no strict word count, posts under 250 words are unlikely to receive full credit because it is challenging to demonstrate thorough engagement with the material in such a brief post. I am looking for evidence of deep reflection on the material.

Possible questions to answer this week:

    • How do you currently practice self-leadership in your personal and professional life?
    • What challenges do you face in leading yourself?
    • What strategies from this week’s materials do you find most applicable to your situation?

Primary Post (Due Friday by 11:59 p.m.)

Your primary post should respond to the provided questions with an analytical approach, rather than merely summarizing information or sharing personal anecdotes. Ensure your response:

    • Analyzes the topic, drawing connections to relevant personal experiences
    • Demonstrates clear, grammatically correct writing, utilizing complete sentences
    • Is submitted by the specified deadline

Two Reply Posts (Due Sunday at 11:59 p.m.)

To receive full points, reply posts should:

    • Thoughtfully engage with the content of two classmates’ primary posts
    • Focus on the analysis presented by your classmates, rather than introducing new personal experiences
    • Be well-written, adhering to standard grammar, spelling, and punctuation rules

  • Time Diary Project

    Assignment Instructions

i do not have a job, i have class on tuesday and thursday

    TIME DIARY PROJECT

For this project, you will keep a diary of how you use your time. The diary should cover a 5-day period and focus on your workday at your current place of employment. It doesn’t need to cover a full 24-hour period; instead, it should focus on your work hours (typically 8-10 hours). If you are not currently employed, your diary should focus on the part of your life most closely related to a vocation or your academic career.

After completing your time diary, download the time diary questions from Blackboard and answer them thoroughly. Once you have finished the project, submit it electronically online. It is recommended to start this project early in the semester.

This says “there is no due date;” however, you must follow the due dates in the course syllabus. NO excuses for late submissions.

Find two examples of bylaws; use your hometown’s recreation agency and one of the cities in Collin, Dallas or Tarrant County. Compare and contrast the contents of each. In your post, discuss how each agency elects board members, and discuss the term lengths and term limits for those board members. Respond to two other classmates posts. *You are not to use AI on this assignment.

To receive full credit, you must reference where you obtained your information for this assignment.

  • Spiritual Leadership

    Introduction to Leadership (MAL 5301)

Engaging the Material (ETM) Exercise, Week 3

    Wilkes, Jesus on Leadership.

    Dolan, Timothy. Called to Lead

Gayne J. Anacker and John R. Shoup. Leadership in the Context of the Christian Worldview.

    1. Reflect on the concept of self-awareness in Christian leadership as discussed by Reggie McNeal (mentioned in Dolan, Chapter 1) and others. How does self-awareness contribute to a leader’s effectiveness, and why is it particularly important in a Christian context? Provide examples from your own experience or observations that illustrate the impact of self-awareness on leadership.
    2. The Twilight Zone episode mentioned in “Called to Lead” serves as a cautionary tale about the consequences of leadership. Discuss the moral of this story in relation to Christian leadership. How does this align with the Christian model of servant leadership, and what lessons can be drawn about the pursuit of power and influence?
    3. Os Guinness describes a primary and secondary calling for Christians. Explain the difference between these callings and discuss how understanding this distinction can influence one’s approach to leadership within a Christian framework.
    4. Reflect on the role of spiritual gifts in discerning one’s call to leadership. How can an individual identify their spiritual gifts, and in what ways should these gifts inform their decision to take on leadership roles within their community or church?
    5. Passion is a significant driver for leadership. Discuss how a Christian leader can discern between passions that are God-given and those that may arise from their own desires. How can a leader ensure that their passions align with God’s will and the teachings of Scripture?
    6. Using the example of Arthur Castle from “Called to Lead,” discuss the potential pitfalls of desiring leadership for the wrong reasons. How does the Christian model of leadership address the temptations of power and self-centered ambition?
    7. In the context of Christian leadership, how does one balance the call to lead with the call to follow Jesus Christ? Provide examples of how this balance can manifest in practical leadership scenarios.

You might not be able to write on the social identity wheel–I couldn’t. If that is the case, list the identities found in the middle of the wheel (as shown in 1-4 below), and then add the boxes’ aspects matching each identity. It is quite possible you might not use all of the aspects.

    1. Identities you think about most often

    2. Identities you think about least often

    3. Your own identities you would like to learn more about

    4. Identities that have the strongest effect on how you see yourself as a person

  • ETM: Management vs. Leadership

    Introduction to Leadership (MAL 5301)

Engaging the Material (ETM) Exercise, Week 2

Based on your readings, how would you define management? How would you define leadership?

Reflecting on the leadership behaviors outlined in Yukl’s table (p. 68):

    • Which behaviors are more commonly associated with managers and leaders?
    • Which behaviors are unique to leaders?
    • Using the table and your definitions, explain how leadership differs from management.
    • Do any of these behaviors align with your current leadership strengths?
    • Are there any behaviors that highlight areas where your leadership could improve?

Watkins discusses “the seven seismic shifts” for leaders.

    • What do these shifts mean to you as you transition from one to another? Make sure to list each shift. For example, what does transitioning from a bricklayer to an architect signify for you?

  • Leads Question

Please post a brief response to allow us to get to know you and to get used to our reading responses:

    • Name
    • Past/current academic program completing?
    • Current area of work/position/role
    • Interest in studying leadership (ie: Why are you taking this course?)
    • Is there anything you feel is necessary for the learning community to know about you in order to be successful?
    • How would you define leadership?

Since this is an online class participation in the online discussion forums is essential. For each reading you will get a grade of 0-10 points for your participation in the discussion boards. As the name suggests, the boards should be about a dialogue between members.

To get full credit you MUST POST AT LEAST THREE TIMES: first your thoughts in reaction to the reading, the second and third in reaction to someone elses post. Im looking to see that your posts are (a) relevant to the reading/topic at hand, (b) substantive (i.e.more than just a single sentence) and (c) demonstrate that youve read the assigned reading and thought about the topic. When responding to what other people have said you can agree or disagree with them, but either way you should ask questions, challenge them, try to get them to think more about the topic. (Just saying I agree, great post! in your response doesnt cut it.)

While there is no formal word count, posts less than 250 words or so are very unlikely to get full credit, as it is hard to demonstrate detailed consideration of the material in such a short length. I want to see that youre really thinking about the material.

Primary Post (Due Friday by 11:59 p.m.)

Your primary post is your response to the questions provided. This post must:

    1. Follow these guidelines.
    2. React analytically, not a summary or just a personal example
    3. Relate and apply topic to your own personal experience
    4. Use correct grammar, spelling, punctuation, and complete sentences
    5. Be posted before the deadline

Two Reply Posts (Due Sunday at 11:59 p.m.)

To receive full points, reply posts will:

    1. React thoughtfully to the content of two classmates primary posts.
    2. Focus your reply on your classmates post, not on your personal experiences
    3. Use correct grammar, spelling, punctuation, and complete sentences
