  • Literature Question

You will write a 1500-word research paper based on Herman Melvilles famous essay Hawthorne and His Mosses (1266). Along with his in-depth analysis of Hawthornes fiction, Melville also argues for the necessity of American writers creating a unique national literature.

I have attached a link to a thorough article by Laurie Sterling about numerous ways to write about Melvilles essay. Search her piece for possible ideas for your paper. You must use Melvilles essay as one of your sources. Most students choose to use Melvilles opinions as a way to approach and analyze a specific story or stories by Hawthorne, Melville, Irving, or Poe. You might want to compare / contrast two stories by the same or different authors. Dont try to cover too much ground. It is better to
say a lot about a little than a little about a lot.

Our school subscribes to Blooms Literature, an excellent database that you can access by following this link: . The How to write about. . . section includes numerous essays about the above authors. You must use at least one of the essays you find there to support and develop your paper. Each one has a citation link that you should use to ensure proper MLA documentation and so that you can reference authors by name in your paper. You may argue against the experts opinions or use them to supplement your own. You might also find useful information in the database that Mr. Biggs discussed in class: Short Stories for Students.

It is vital that you come up with a strong, specific thesis and a coherent, logical outline for your paper. Blooms Literature has a marvelous text, also by Sterling, that provides clear, concise tips for planning and writing a research paper, including a sample paper about Hawthornes The Birth-Mark.

Preparation for our meeting on Wednesday

In class we observed significant diversity in the territorial bounds of the Armenian homeland in viewing a map highlighting the states continually changing contours.Similarly, we tracked a transformation from religion to nationalism from the late 18th to the mid-19th centuries. Now, we are going to examine the parallel course plotted in the literary realm.

The assignment for Wednesday is to read the three poems below from different periods treating the issue of home and homeland from very contrasting perspectives and reflecting very differentbackgrounds to appreciate something of the complexity of nationalist goals and sentiments and the degree of diversity evoked in their cultural expression in various sociopolitical situations at different times.

    a) YovhannesVanandecis poem To Armenia of the early 19th century

    b) MusheghIshkhansThe Armenian Language is the Home of the Armenian (1936)

    c) Ashugh Shiraks To the Red Homeland (c. 1944)

After reading over the three poems, select one and write around half a page on your analysis of a) the type of home or homeland described, and b) what this tells us about the background of the writing and the potential audience addressed.

Please email me your work by 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday to so that I can coordinate your responses and factor them into our discussion of the poems in class on Wednesday. Please send your work in a Word File (not PDF) with your name and the title of the poem in the subject line.

    1) YovhannesVanandetsi (1772-1841)

    To Armenia

    Armenia, land of paradise!

Land where mankinds first cradle lies.

My native land, my hearts dear prize,

    Armenia, Armenia, Armenia.

At your great name, my heart is thrilled

With courage new, my fears are flown

With eagerness I long for you.

I hope in you, in you alone,

    Armenia, Armenia, Armenia.

    Armenia, name of grace!

There found Noahs Ark its resting place.

There Noah dwelt and reared his race,

    Armenia, Armenia, Armenia.

Great rivers that in Eden rise

    Water and fertilize your ground.

Oh, may I live and joy in you,

In you my only boast be found,

    Armenia, Armenia, Armenia.

    (trans. Alice Stone Blackwell)

N.B.In interpreting this poem Id like you to pause on the repeated emphasis on the name of Armenia (at your great name . . . name of grace) and the significance of the response of boasting (in you my only boast . . .).

    2) MusheghIshkhan (1913-1990)

The Armenian Language is the Home of the Armenian

The Armenian language is the home

And haven where the wanderer can own

    Roof and wall and nourishment.

He can enter to find love and pride,

Locking the hyena and the storm outside.

For centuries its architects have toiled

    To give its ceilings height.

    How many peasants working

    Day and night have kept

Its cupboards full, lamps lit, ovens hot.

Always rejuvenated, always old, it lasts

Century to century on the path

Where every Armenian can find it when hes lost

In the wilderness of his future, or his past.

    (1936)

    3) Ashugh Shirak

    To The Red Homeland

    O Dearest, red Soviet Homeland,

You are a garden adorned with flowers,

You gained benefits under Stalins light,

You are the great defender of the working class.

Soviet world, you are pretty, lively,

Like an inextinguishable torch may you shine through the ages.

You bloom more from day to day; you are prosperous and radiant.

    Magnificent, enchanting, you are incomparable.

Ashugh Shirak said you are well founded,

You are stable, stay steadfast forever.

    Long live Stalin, noble, honorable,

Creator of a new life, you are honorable.

    (c.1944)

    How to Submit Your Essay

    • To upload your document, click on the Submit Assignment button at the top of this page
    • File types accepted: PDF, Word, Docx.
    • Please, avoid any plagiarism or AI sources. It is mandatory to submit your work as required, including TurnItin review on your submission page. If you attempt to avoid TurnItin, your grade will be reduced. The best strategy is to give yourself enough time and to trust your original work.

    And please, remember:

    1. You enrolled in this class to learn better writing and communication skills. If you use AI sources instead of your own efforts, you will not master essential skills for your future academic success in any discipline. In short, you will be wasting your time in this class.

    2. AI sources are far from perfect. Their accuracy depends on the information available and that information will never be specific enough for the material that we cover in class.

    3. AI sources often reflect human errors – from incorrect syntax (sentence structure) to more basic grammar errors.

    4. AI sources exploit millions of people worldwide, but the “product” you might receive often reveals its tech nature rather than human.

    5. After many years of teaching experience and additional AI recognition training, I can tell the difference between your original work and AI without any doubt. You can try, but I wouldn’t recommend it.

Assignment: Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Lesson Plan

For this assignment, you will design a lesson plan through the lens of critical pedagogy and the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL). Your goal is to create a lesson that considers every member of your classroom communitytheir unique backgrounds, lived experiences, and ways of engaging, accessing, and expressing learning.

    If Youre a Classroom Teacher

Create a lesson plan for a content area and grade level of your choice that demonstrates inclusive and accessible design, multiple means of engagement and expression, and is culturally responsive to the individuals in your school. You may wish to design something you can actually use in your classroom or include in your APPR portfolio this year.

    Assignment Guidelines

Please review the sample lesson plans and lesson plan rubric (linked below) before starting your work.

    Your submission should:

    • Highlight multiple strategies for student engagement
    • Include key learning activities, digital resources, and class materials
    • Include a paragraph for me as the reader about how this lesson connects to our learning this term and a reference list.
    • Contain enough detail and supporting artifacts to resemble what you would turn in to your principal if they requested your lesson materials. (You dont need every single document, but your submission should reflect a well-planned, authentic lesson.)

Clarification: You are not “teaching a lesson on critical race theory to children, which can be a fear of those outside of education. This assignment is a chance to practice writing a lesson that uses your gained consideration of the diversity in our classrooms as a result of our study this term to make your content/curriculum accessible and meaningful to the individuals in your classroom community.

    Lesson Plan Requirements

    Your lesson must:

    • Be aligned with NYS Standards or Next Generation Learning Standards
    • Include an authentic and engaging learning activity
    • Apply Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles
    • Be culturally appropriate (critical pedagogy) and grounded for the learners in your classroom
    • Demonstrate backward planning (clear learning target at the start and aligned formative/summative assessment that demonstrates student learning)
    • Connect to the big picture of cultural responsiveness, diversity, and community building. For example: show how this lesson fits into a multicultural unit, a series of lessons, or a school-wide event celebrating diversity

Please remember that I am a middle school and high school art teacher. Please make this lesson a fun and engaging project that students will actually want to complete!!!

  • Literature Question

This research paper will be a Problem and Solution Paper, and should be about something on a local scale. This means that you will brainstorm and identify a problem that impacts your life that you would like to see solved. Then you will try to figure out what steps can be made to solve or start solving this problem.

For instance, former students have written about everything from fixing potholes on major Atlanta roads, to ways to assist the unhoused population of Atlanta, to best diets for people with diabetes, to ways to combat high costs of housing in Atlanta, etc. These are just some examples, and next week you’ll do some brainstorming to come up with your topic (what problem you want to address in your paper and what possible solutions you might investigate through research).

Once you have your topic, every major assignment will be about this topic, and each one should help you build toward the final paper at the end of the semester. It is totally fine to switch topics at any point in the semester, but the earlier you land on a topic the better.

    • We will start with Research Project Part 1: Personal Response where you will discuss your topic through the lens of your own experiences and ideas, before doing researcher. This will be where you should explain what the problem is that you want to address, what your connection to that problem is, what your personal experiences have taught your about the problem, and what ideas you have for solutions. For this first essay, you will be discussing your topic before doing any research.

For example, if the topic were fixing potholes, for Research Project Part 1, you might write about your experiences driving in Atlanta, why this is a topic of personal concern for you, what problems potholes have caused you, and what you would like to see done about it.

    • We will then go through a Peer Review Workshop, based on your Research Project Part 1, where you give and receive comments to and from some of your classmates about what you have so far about your topic, and what you should focus on in the research phase.
    • Then, our next step will be Research Project Part 2: Research and Source Analysis where you will then do the research into your topic, finding at least 4 different sources that will give you the information you need to write your research paper. These should be sources that include any background information you might need, details about the problem you want to address, and ideas about possible solutions. This assignment will basically be an essay where you discuss the research process and what sources you found, what makes them trustworthy and useful sources for your paper, and how you plan to use them in your final paper, etc.

So, returning to our example of potholes, you might find a news article that talks about current efforts to fix roads in metro Atlanta, an academic article that discusses how damaging potholes can be and why maintaining infrastructure like roads is essential for a city’s economy, an article about who funds road repair projects, and another about successful efforts to update and repair roads in other cities, for example. Your essay would then consist of explaining what your topic is, and then going through your sources explaining why they are useful to you and what makes them credible.
