    Instructions and Essay Topics

    • Begin by developing a good outline before writing.
    • Formulate a working thesis that responds directly and clearly to the topic of your choice.
    • Decide which main points (in body paragraphs) will best support your thesis.
    • Select evidence from the text(s) of your choice in support of your main points.
    • Write your opening paragraph that introduces the title and the author of your chosen text. Make sure that your thesis is clear and that your main points are included in your introduction.
    • Write the rest of your essay and revise at least twice before submitting.
    • Edit carefully to correct any grammar or spelling errors.

Choose one of the following topics for your essay. Remember that you will have to focus the topic of your choice into your own, specific thesis. After your introductory paragraph, you will also have to support the major ideas you analyze by offering evidence from the texts quotes and/or paraphrased points by the authors. Please, remember our focus on clarity and precision. Avoid: generic statements; repetition of the same ideas; universal truths or “meaningless word salads”. Your essay should be 3 pages long.

    1. How does Jared Diamonds essay, The Erosion of Civilization, present some of the major environmental problems that we face today? While your focus is primarily on Diamonds essay, you can also add some additional evidence to his main ideas from another text of your choice on our reading list to support your thesis further.

Consider supporting your thesis by additional evidence provided in one or two other texts, especially the latest articles on the ongoing destruction of predators in the US, as posted in our module.

    5. In Animal Extinction Julia Whitty states that mass extinction is a more serious environmental problem than even its contributor, global warming (par. 10). Explain her argument using appropriate evidence from the text. You can support your analysis with additional evidence from the recent articles on the ongoing destruction of wolves in the US, posted in our module.

    How to Submit Your Essay

    • To upload your document, click on the Submit Assignment button at the top of this page
    • File types accepted: PDF, Word, Docx.
    • Please, avoid any plagiarism or AI sources. It is mandatory to submit your work as required, including TurnItin review on your submission page. If you attempt to avoid TurnItin, your grade will be reduced. The best strategy is to give yourself enough time and to trust your original work.

    And please, remember:

    1. You enrolled in this class to learn better writing and communication skills. If you use AI sources instead of your own efforts, you will not master essential skills for your future academic success in any discipline. In short, you will be wasting your time in this class.

    2. AI sources are far from perfect. Their accuracy depends on the information available and that information will never be specific enough for the material that we cover in class.

    3. AI sources often reflect human errors – from incorrect syntax (sentence structure) to more basic grammar errors.

    4. AI sources exploit millions of people worldwide, but the “product” you might receive often reveals its tech nature rather than human.

    5. After many years of teaching experience and additional AI recognition training, I can tell the difference between your original work and AI without any doubt. You can try, but I wouldn’t recommend it.

Assignment: Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Lesson Plan

For this assignment, you will design a lesson plan through the lens of critical pedagogy and the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL). Your goal is to create a lesson that considers every member of your classroom communitytheir unique backgrounds, lived experiences, and ways of engaging, accessing, and expressing learning.

    If Youre a Classroom Teacher

Create a lesson plan for a content area and grade level of your choice that demonstrates inclusive and accessible design, multiple means of engagement and expression, and is culturally responsive to the individuals in your school. You may wish to design something you can actually use in your classroom or include in your APPR portfolio this year.

    Assignment Guidelines

Please review the sample lesson plans and lesson plan rubric (linked below) before starting your work.

    Your submission should:

    • Highlight multiple strategies for student engagement
    • Include key learning activities, digital resources, and class materials
    • Include a paragraph for me as the reader about how this lesson connects to our learning this term and a reference list.
    • Contain enough detail and supporting artifacts to resemble what you would turn in to your principal if they requested your lesson materials. (You dont need every single document, but your submission should reflect a well-planned, authentic lesson.)

Clarification: You are not “teaching a lesson on critical race theory to children, which can be a fear of those outside of education. This assignment is a chance to practice writing a lesson that uses your gained consideration of the diversity in our classrooms as a result of our study this term to make your content/curriculum accessible and meaningful to the individuals in your classroom community.

    Lesson Plan Requirements

    Your lesson must:

    • Be aligned with NYS Standards or Next Generation Learning Standards
    • Include an authentic and engaging learning activity
    • Apply Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles
    • Be culturally appropriate (critical pedagogy) and grounded for the learners in your classroom
    • Demonstrate backward planning (clear learning target at the start and aligned formative/summative assessment that demonstrates student learning)
    • Connect to the big picture of cultural responsiveness, diversity, and community building. For example: show how this lesson fits into a multicultural unit, a series of lessons, or a school-wide event celebrating diversity

Please remember that I am a middle school and high school art teacher. Please make this lesson a fun and engaging project that students will actually want to complete!!!

  • Literature Question

This research paper will be a Problem and Solution Paper, and should be about something on a local scale. This means that you will brainstorm and identify a problem that impacts your life that you would like to see solved. Then you will try to figure out what steps can be made to solve or start solving this problem.

For instance, former students have written about everything from fixing potholes on major Atlanta roads, to ways to assist the unhoused population of Atlanta, to best diets for people with diabetes, to ways to combat high costs of housing in Atlanta, etc. These are just some examples, and next week you’ll do some brainstorming to come up with your topic (what problem you want to address in your paper and what possible solutions you might investigate through research).

Once you have your topic, every major assignment will be about this topic, and each one should help you build toward the final paper at the end of the semester. It is totally fine to switch topics at any point in the semester, but the earlier you land on a topic the better.

    • We will start with Research Project Part 1: Personal Response where you will discuss your topic through the lens of your own experiences and ideas, before doing researcher. This will be where you should explain what the problem is that you want to address, what your connection to that problem is, what your personal experiences have taught your about the problem, and what ideas you have for solutions. For this first essay, you will be discussing your topic before doing any research.

For example, if the topic were fixing potholes, for Research Project Part 1, you might write about your experiences driving in Atlanta, why this is a topic of personal concern for you, what problems potholes have caused you, and what you would like to see done about it.

    • We will then go through a Peer Review Workshop, based on your Research Project Part 1, where you give and receive comments to and from some of your classmates about what you have so far about your topic, and what you should focus on in the research phase.
    • Then, our next step will be Research Project Part 2: Research and Source Analysis where you will then do the research into your topic, finding at least 4 different sources that will give you the information you need to write your research paper. These should be sources that include any background information you might need, details about the problem you want to address, and ideas about possible solutions. This assignment will basically be an essay where you discuss the research process and what sources you found, what makes them trustworthy and useful sources for your paper, and how you plan to use them in your final paper, etc.

So, returning to our example of potholes, you might find a news article that talks about current efforts to fix roads in metro Atlanta, an academic article that discusses how damaging potholes can be and why maintaining infrastructure like roads is essential for a city’s economy, an article about who funds road repair projects, and another about successful efforts to update and repair roads in other cities, for example. Your essay would then consist of explaining what your topic is, and then going through your sources explaining why they are useful to you and what makes them credible.
