Topic: Human Physiology, Homeostasis, and Disease

    Background

The human body maintains stable internal conditions through homeostasis despite changes in the external environment. Systems such as the nervous system and endocrine system play a key role in regulating body functions. Disruptions in these systems can lead to diseases such as diabetes or hypertension.

    Assignment Questions

Question 1: Homeostasis and Regulation (20 Marks)

    Using biological concepts:

    a) Explain the concept of homeostasis and why it is essential for survival.

    b) Describe the roles of the nervous system and the endocrine system in maintaining homeostasis.

    c) Using body temperature or blood glucose regulation as an example, explain how negative feedback mechanisms operate in humans.

Question 2: Disease and Body Response (25 Marks)

Discuss how failure in homeostatic mechanisms can lead to disease.

    Your answer should include:

Explanation of one disease (e.g., diabetes mellitus)

How the disease disrupts normal physiological processes

The role of hormones such as insulin

Effects on the body (short-term and long-term)

    Methods of treatment and management

  • Scientific evaluation paper

Claim: Chronic social isolation contributes to increased depressive symptoms and weak cognitive functioning in students and young adults.

Thesis: In students and young adults, chronic social isolation is associated with increased depressive symptoms and poor cognitive performance through stress dysregulation, neuroinflammation, sleep disruption, and altered brain plasticity and network function.

You can tweak or change my claim or thesis to something better and stronger. This is what I could come up with so far.

I have attached the rubric to follow for the assignment. I am aiming for an A+, A the least B+. I have already lost 5% so I need to get the full 20%.

The paper is 12 pages excluding references.

Minimum of 25 references total, including:

    • 20 primary research articles
    • 15 primary articles from 2016 or later
    • 5 primary animal studies
    • 5 references addressing equity-deserving / ethnoracial / cultural issues

All references must follow a consistent citation style

  • E4d Neuroanatomy

Hi! I need to post the INITIAL post than respond two students. Please see instructions. We probably needs to cite your sources.

DISCUSSION OPTION 1- Describe 3 differences between the peripheral nervous system’s autonomic and the somatic divisions.

DISCUSSION OPTION 2 – Describe the purpose of a reflex. Outline the steps one specific reflex.

DISCUSSION BONUS OPTION- What is a somatic exercise? Describe how somatic exercises can affect autonomic functions. Provide 2 specific examples in your response.

    Submission Details

    • Choose either Option 1 or 2 in the Neuroanatomy discussion boards.
    • Title your first post as either Option 1 or Option 2.
    • After your initial post, you will need to make a minimum of 1 response. In your responses, you should ask a question or provide an answer to a question.
    • Optional- Research somatic exercises and answer the bonus prompt. This can earn you up to 10 bonus points.

Minimum # of responses: 1 original post submission, 1 response. Note – to earn full credit, you must have 1 original post submission and 2 responses. See rubric full grading criteria.
