Imagine a scenario where a child is born with a rare and severe medical condition that leads to significant suffering over time. While the child initially appears healthy, the condition causes progressive physical changes and developmental challenges. Despite these challenges, the child remains mentally sharp and emotionally aware.

This condition is life-threatening, with a drastically reduced life expectancy, often cutting short the possibility of reaching adulthood. Treatments exist that might alleviate some symptoms and potentially extend life, but they don’t offer a cure and could involve extensive, long-term care.

Parents are faced with a tough choice:

• Should they approve a medical procedure that might extend their child’s life, knowing it could lead to ongoing and expensive care?
• Or should they decide against it, which could result in their child’s death?
• For this discussion, let’s focus on the ethics of the decision rather than on who has the authority to make it.

Developing a Nursing Perspective

This is a project for my nursing OB clinical. The topic is the Amish community. This is a project to focus on Amish community in the world of Obstetrics and labor and delivery and how nurses in the modern world can adapt to help them while obeying the rules they follow in their culture. For this assignment, read Chapter 6, “Patient, Subordinate, Workplace, and Professional Advocacy,” Chapter 11, “Career Planning and Development in Nursing,” and Chapter 13, “Organizational, Political, and Personal Power,” in your Huston (11th edition) textbook. Review the resources provided in Module 4 Professionalism and Transitional Issues for additional information beyond the textbook to complete this assignment.

In lieu of completing Section 1 (Professional Nursing Organizations) and Section 2 (Professional and Political Advocacy) of the Professionalism and Transitional Issues Assignment, students may attend MNA Lobby Day at the Mississippi Capitol on January 28, 2026 (in person), or the MNA Legislative Nursing Summit beginning on February 24, 2026 (virtual). Details for the MNA events can be found at and click on Events. Information is also available on these events in Module 4 in Canvas. MUW faculty representatives will attend each event, both in person and virtually, and the student can validate attendance with an MUW BSN faculty member during the event. One MNA event will count for both Sections 1 and 2. For example, if a student attends the MNA Legislative Nursing Summit, then the student does not have to complete Sections 1 and 2 on the assignment. Attendance at these events is optional. It is not mandatory. The student will still complete Section 3 Career Planning on the assignment.
