  • 10-1 Discussion: Sustaining a Quality Improvement

Imagine that you work at a large Northern Midwest clinic. Your department implemented a very successful quality improvement six months ago that has reduced medication errors. The improvement requires the evidence-based practice of having two nurses review the vaccine type and dosage. The hospital’s CFO has recently suggested not requiring the two-nurse process for vaccine administration for the summer, since it requires extra staffing to make sure there are enough nurses to perform the processes. In summer, especially during extended hours, it is difficult to find enough nurses for that staffing level since almost all the nurses use their vacation time during the summer. You have overheard some nurses supporting the CFO’s suggestion for the summer. While the success of the new intervention was shared with the clinic director, you do not know if that major improvement was communicated with the nurses.

This discussion will help you explain how to persuade and change behaviors of various stakeholders to sustain quality improvement and identify how to persuade and generate enthusiasm to sustain an initiative.

In your initial post, address the following:

    • What could you do to build support and sustain the two-nurse vaccine administration quality improvement?
    • What are some ways you could create new enthusiasm for the two-nurse vaccine administration quality improvement with nurses?
    • If the CFO asked for your opinion on his suggestion, how would you reply?
  • 8-1 Discussion: Communication Strategies for Personal Protec…

This morning, multiple cases of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) were identified in your hospital’s pediatric unit. RSV has the potential to spread very rapidly. The director of infection prevention met with the quality director, your manager, a few hours later. They decided to implement a quality initiative that was used by another hospital system last year when a similar identification of RSV occurred in one of their hospitals. The quality director sent out a notice to all physicians and nurses on the need to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) if you are entering or near the pediatric unit, which is one of the most important parts of the quality initiative. Unfortunately, you have observed several healthcare providers not wearing any PPE while caring for RSV patients.

This discussion will help you complete your course project by learning how you can communicate information in your quality improvement report.

In your initial post, address the following:

    • What communication strategies would you use to get doctors and nurses to acknowledge that it is essential for them to wear their PPE?
    • How would you customize a presentation on RSV to the public, including families of children currently in the pediatric unit?
  • Week 8 Project

    Thinking AheadOutcome Measures

Gaining clarity on the data that will need to be collected to evaluate practice change should be done during the initial planning stage of the project, before implementing the intervention. Your practice setting may provide options for collecting data from various sources, such as EHR, admissions and discharges, and morbidity and mortality reports. If not, you will need to determine what data you need, when it should be collected, who will collect it, and how you will collect it. In addition, you will need to determine how it will be analyzed.

    To prepare:

    • Review the Synthesis Table you created in Submissions Area for your project and compare the result with the desired outcome from your PICOT question.
    • Identify outcome measures that you will monitor as indicators of practice change, deciding how the data will be collected (pre- and posttests of participants, EHR, admission and discharge data, etc.) and analyzed.

    For this assignment, you will:

    • Use the to organize your outcomes. Fill out the table to include variables of interest, data needed, frequency of data collection, methods of data collection, who will collect, and a description of the analysis conducted.
    • List your outcomes in the far left column, filling in the other columns for each outcome.
    • Include a 1-2-page description of:
    • Any statistical manipulation that may be necessary to help analyze the outcomes, with a rationale as to why this method is appropriate.
    • A brief statement about how you will motivate your coworkers or team to collect this data.

You will turn in both the table and the 1-page narrative for this assignment.

  • Unit 6 Discussion – Special Senses

    Instructions

The special senses help us communicate with our environment. A special sense is one that has a specific organ associated with it, like the nose, tongue, ear, and eye. The special senses consist of smell, taste, hearing, balance, and vision.

    • Based on what your last name starts with, use the key listed below to identify what your assigned special sense is for this discussion:
    • Last name starts with A-I = Hearing
    • Last name starts with J-R = Smell *MY LAST NAME STARTS WITH AN “M”*
    • Last name starts with S-Z = Vision
    • Based on your assigned special sense, answer the following questions:
    • Briefly describe the anatomy and physiology of your assigned special sense.
    • Imagine you are without your special sense. Create and briefly describe an emergency, like a fire, and answer the following questions based on your emergency.
    • Explain how your special sense loss would give you an advantage over the other groups’ lost special sense in the emergency you have created. Explain the reasoning behind your advantages.
    • In this same scenario, how would your special sense loss put you at a disadvantage compared to the other groups? Explain your reasoning.
    • Explain how you would adapt to the emergency using the remainder of your intact senses. Be specific.

Please be sure to validate your opinions and ideas with citations and references in APA format.

  • Evidence Based Research Paper

    • Analyze and critique a Peer-Reviewed EBP Research Study from a professional advanced practice journal (< 5 years old). Please make sure it’s a primary research study and not just an article or literature review. Review the rubric prior to choosing a study to ensure you are able to meet all of the requirements.
    • Assess the implications and relevance of research findings to your specific APN track.
    • Identify and discuss the alignment with MSN Essentials demonstrated in the assignment.

    Task Overview:

    • Paper Requirements:
    • Compose a 4-5 page APA paper (7th edition) excluding the title and references. Students must expound on the paper’s topics and not just answer the questions to receive full credit. Work must be reflective of graduate-level work.
    • All assignments that include references must provide either a functional hyperlink to the source or upload the full journal article. Failure to include a working link or the article will result in a grade of zero for the assignment. Broken or inaccessible links will also receive a zero.

    Assignment Guidelines:

    1. APN Track Identification: ***FNP***
    • Clearly state your specific APN track at the beginning of the paper.
    1. Article Selection Details:
    • Describe the methodology used to locate the chosen article (e.g., databases like PubMed, CINAHL, search terms utilized, etc.).
    • Specify the journal name, publication year, article title, and all authors.
    1. Research Study Details:
    • Define the research topic and the specific question under study, utilizing PICOT if provided.
    • Outline the subject selection process, detailing how subjects were identified.
    • Analyze and discuss the research methods and methodology employed in the study.
    1. Research Findings:
    • Summarize and synthesize the main findings presented in the research paper.
    • Interpret the findings, including statistical analyses (e.g., p-values, significance levels).
    1. Professional Practice Significance:
    • Discuss the practical implications and significance of the research findings within your specific APN track.
    1. Submission and Links:
    • Submit the paper to the Canvas assignment site for grading.
    • Provide a link to the chosen research article at the conclusion of your paper.
    1. MSN Essentials Alignment:
    • Reflect on and identify which Domain(s) of the MSN Essentials are addressed or demonstrated through this assignment.
