Imagine that you work at a large Northern Midwest clinic. Your department implemented a very successful quality improvement six months ago that has reduced medication errors. This morning, multiple cases of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) were identified in your hospital’s pediatric unit. RSV has the potential to spread very rapidly. The director of infection prevention met with the quality director, your manager, a few hours later. They decided to implement a quality initiative that was used by another hospital system last year when a similar identification of RSV occurred in one of their hospitals. The quality director sent out a notice to all physicians and nurses on the need to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) if you are entering or near the pediatric unit, which is one of the most important parts of the quality initiative. Unfortunately, you have observed several healthcare providers not wearing any PPE while caring for RSV patients.

This discussion will help you complete your course project by learning how you can communicate information in your quality improvement report.

Gaining clarity on the data that will need to be collected to evaluate practice change should be done during the initial planning stage of the project, before implementing the intervention. If not, you will need to determine what data you need, when it should be collected, who will collect it, and how you will collect it. In addition, you will need to determine how it will be analyzed.
