  • Designing a research study

    Overview

This capstone is designed to encourage your synthesis of key developmental issues, stages, theories, concepts, and research methods in early or middle adulthood and to integrate and critical scientific reasoning in designing a new research study.

    Learning Outcomes

By completing this capstone, you will learn how to:

    • Define key issues, stages, and theories in developmental science from a lifespan perspective.
    • Identify key biological, physical, cognitive, emotional, and social changes that occur in your selected developmental stage (early adulthood or middle adulthood).
    • Define key issues relevant to your developmental stage from a lifespan perspective.
    • Compare and contrast major developmental theories about key tasks in stages of .
    • Explain major methods of data collection and research design in lifespan developmental psychology
    • Integrate and scientific reasoning to develop novel and relevant research questions.

    Task

First, you will select and explain a specific stage (early or middle adulthood) in terms of its typical age range and major developmental milestones (biological, physical, cognitive, emotional, and social).

Then, you will identify a construct that is relevant to your chosen stage. A construct is a behavior, , or experience that can be studied in more detail. For example, key constructs in adulthood could include (but are not limited to) career development, formation, and parenting. You will explain what the construct is and how it is important to your chosen developmental stage.

Next, you will select a theory that helps to explain your chosen construct in your chosen developmental stage. You may choose from Eriksons theory, information processing theory, theory, behavioral theory, or theory. Do not choose Piaget or Vygotsky for this capstone. Explain the major ideas in your chosen theory, and discuss how this theory helps to explain why your construct is important during your selected developmental stage.

Finally, you will design a new study of your construct that could be conducted in your selected developmental stage. Use theory to guide the articulation of your research question and . Describe your population and how you would select the sample, the study design and general procedure, as well as what variables you would like to measure. You will also discuss the importance of conducting this new research and what it will add to our understanding of adult development.

Please use this chart to help you organize your capstone:

PartDescriptionTop Tips for SuccessPart I. Developmental Stage

Reflect on which phase of adult development is most interesting to you:

    • Early adulthood
    • Middle adulthood

Choose ONE stage to focus on for this capstone.

First, create a header for this section (e.g., Developmental Stage).

Then, in one paragraph: Articulate your selected developmental stage using a strong topic sentence. Then, in 3-4 sentences that follow, explain the major developmental milestones (i.e., biological, physical, cognitive, emotional, and social milestones) that occur during your selected stage.

Be specific in this paragraphmake sure to be very clear when articulating and explaining your chosen developmental stage.

Define and give concrete examples of each type of milestone (biological, physical, cognitive, emotional, and social).

    Part 2. Construct of Interest

Think about the key characteristics of your chosen developmental stage. What aspect is most interesting to you (biological, physical, cognitive, emotional, social)? Now consider a construct (e.g., a specific behavior, , or experience) that piques your curiosity. Select ONE construct that has relevance to your chosen developmental stage.

First, create a header for this section (e.g., Construct of Interest).

Then, in one or two paragraphs: Explain the construct in detail. Define and discuss your chosen construct in 3-4 sentences. Then, in another 3-4 sentences, explain why this construct is important to your chosen developmental stage by exploring how it relates to biological, physical, cognitive, emotional, and/or social growth during this time.

This part of the capstone asks you to do two things. Be sure to fully explain the construct AND discuss how it impacts development during this time.

Be sure your construct is not too vague or general. Physical development would be too general, but declining physical strength may be specific and interesting enough to design a study about.

    Part 3. Developmental

Think about the major theories of development you have learned about so far in this course:

    • Eriksons theory
    • Information processing theory
    • theory
    • Behavioral theory
    • theory

(Remember: do not choose Piaget or Vygotsky). Which theory seems to have the most relevance for your developmental stage and the construct of interest you have selected? Do any of the theories help you understand why this construct is so important to development during this time?

First, create a header for this section (e.g., Developmental).

Then, in one paragraph: Describe the major ideas of your chosen theory in 3-4 sentences. Then, in another 3-4 sentences, discuss how this theory (and its major ideas) relates to your construct of interest. Be specific in your discussion.

Remember that Part 3 requires you to define AND discuss a theory.

Your theory definition will be academic and will rely on textbook content. Your discussion of how the theory applies to your experience will require your own creative thinking as an extension of the textbook content you review.

Feel free to leverage a theory that may point you to new research questions about your construct.

Part 4. A New Research Study

Considering your stage, construct, and theory, reflect on what you do NOT yet know about the construct from the textbook. Let your creativity emerge, and allow yourself to wonder. What are you curious about? What does your selected theory tell you (or not tell you) about the construct?

Create a research question and . Think about the type of participant sample you would need to recruit. What characteristics do you want them to have? How will you recruit them?

Look at your research question and . What variables do you need to measure in order to answer this question?

Finally, think about why this study is important to conduct and what it will add to the scientific literature on your topic.

First, create a header for this section (e.g., A New Research Study).

Then, in 2-3 paragraphs (of at least 3 sentences each): Articulate your research question as an actual question. Explain your (what is your expectation about the study results?). Discuss the type of research design you will use to address your question. Describe the sample and how it will be recruited. Explain the variables you will measure (and how you will measure them). Discuss why the study is important and what it will add to the literature.

Read the instructions carefully! Do not skip any aspect of this section.

If you are unclear about what a research question, , study design, sample, and/or variable is, look up this information in your textbook.

Be sure to get specific about why the study is important to conduct and what it will add. Just because its interesting or new is not sufficient.

Write a 35 page paper to cover the best practices related to a current healthcare problem. Palliative and End-of-Life Care o Description: Care focused on providing relief from symptoms and improving the quality of life for those with serious illnesses. o Interventions: Pain management, spiritual support, advanced care planning. o Keywords: Hospice care, advanced directives, quality of life. in which you include the following: Summarize the healthcare problem or issue, including a description of its professional relevance. Describe your interest in the problem or issue. Describe any professional experience you have with this topic. 2. Discussion of Research Discuss your research and selection process for each of the three journal articles you have chosen to include in your annotated bibliography. Describe your process of applying library research skills to identify the journal articles relevant to the healthcare problem or issue you are researching. Identify the keywords you used to select the articles. Describe the criteria you used to select the resources, including the names of the Capella library databases that you used. What was the process like to locate relevant articles? Assess the credibility of the information sources. Determine whether each resource is from an academic, peer-reviewed journal. Determine whether the publication is current (published within the last 35 years). Determine whether information in the academic peer-reviewed journal article is still relevant. Assess the relevance of the information sources. Is the information relevant to your topic? For example, did you select an article about a health system in Japan and how is that applicable to your topic of a U.S. healthcare issue or problem? Explain how the healthcare problem or issue is addressed in each source. Discuss what kind of contribution each resource provides. 3. Annotated Bibliography Summarize each of the three current academic, peer-reviewed journal articles you chose, using the annotated bibliography organizational format. The purpose of an annotated bibliography is to document a list of references along with key information about each one. The detail about the reference is the annotation. Developing this annotated bibliography will create a foundation of knowledge about the selected topic. Be sure to complete this assessment’s Annotated Bibliography activity before starting this section. In your annotated bibliography: List each full reference in APA format, followed immediately by its annotation. Present your three current, annotated references in alphabetical order, according to the reference citation. Double-space each reference and format it with a hanging indent. Provide the full APA reference citation, including the author, date, title, publisher or publication, and any additional information required by APA style. Write the annotation (summary) for each citation in paragraph form, using approximately 150 words (or 13 paragraphs) for each annotation. Make sure to cite the article in your summary. Include the following components for each annotation: Identify the purpose of the article. Summarize the article. Include the conclusions and findings of the article. Ensure each article is relevant to your topic. 4. Summary In a separate paragraph or two at the end of the paper, summarize what you learned from the process of developing the annotated bibliography. 5. Reference page in APA style format. Articles are already selected and attached.

  • Case study

Use the template unless your instructor provides you with a different one.* The Case Study is done on ONE patient and broken into two parts, look at the rubric and the checklist (not just the template) to help guide you on what is required in part one and part two. One child case study (ages 12 and under) is required for the program and can be done in any semester, preferably in the summer. Your clinical instructor will inform you of other requirements. The preceptor is required to digitally sign your case study. While AI is encouraged to help improve one’s writing, entering patient information into AI powered tools is a HIPAA violation. Also, trying to have AI write your paper for you which can be detected in many ways, the student may earn a 0 on the assingment. Choose a patient with a single (one) diagnosis this semester, but also choose one where all the information can be completed in each section. Students may lose points on a section if not completed thoroughly. CASE STUDY TEMPLATE PART ONE.docx Student case study 1 checklist Remove the red text in the template, also remove the text in the discussion boxes. Review the checklist and rubric when completing each section. Including the information listed in the checklist and rubric for each section may not be enough to earn all the available points. Comprehensive Case Study Tips The student is required to develop each section to show critical thinking skills moving the student toward the diagnosis and plan for the patient through a thorough discussion of conclusions drawn based on patient presentation as well as a discussion of clinical decisions and planning. Furthermore, the development of the sections needs to show continuity between the sections and the diagnosis and plan at the end. Faculty reading your case study should be able to see your thought processes while you are developing each section, see where you are heading with your diagnosis, and plan before arriving at them. Carlat is also a good reference, pages 258-269, for further guidance in writing your case study.

Please use patient information provided and you may elaborate if needed I jus provided the basic. Also the Pending case study is an example
