  • HTN Discussion

You are having a busy day in your own private family practice clinic. You are happy to see a patient on your schedule that looks to be an “easy” patient. BUT here is what you see:

A 14-year-old female soccer player has been referred for evaluation of elevated blood pressure detected at a pre-sports participation screening at her school 2 weeks ago. She is 5′ tall.

Blood pressures obtained at the screening ranged from 137149/7580 mmHg. The school nurse has been monitoring her and has documented the same range.

    Her BP today is 136/82.

Using the pediatric BP calculator, what is your diagnosis? In your posting, document one component of either your work up or your plan for this patient, and explain why that would be important.

  • Impact of STI educational program on prophylactic medication…

This was my suggested PICOT question : What is the impact of an evidence-based STI educational program on use of prophylactic medications by family nurse practitioners on incidence of sexually transmitted infections in adolescents (age 15-24 years) in a primary care setting over a 6-month period?” Your Introduction must include: Your PICOT question. Purpose of or rationale for the scholarly project: Provide an evidence-based explanation of why it is necessary to complete your scholarly project and what benefit will be gained (health promotion, fiscal, and efficiency). Background on the problem or population of interest: Using primary sources, provide data on your topic. Providing the background will demonstrate the focused need for your project. Significance of the problem to nursing and health care: State how your problem or population of interest aligns with the larger interest of health care in the community. Create a context to why your topic is important. Benefit of the project to nursing practice: State what will be gained from your project. Describe the expected outcomes of your project to practice within your population and setting. Relate the outcomes to evidence-based guidelines and outcomes. Describe how your project may influence other populations or settings. Submission Instructions: The introduction is original work and logically organized. The paper is 2-3 pages in length and follows current APA format including citation of references. Incorporate a minimum of 4 current (published within the last five years) scholarly journal articles or primary legal sources (statutes, court opinions) within your work. Journal articles and books should be referenced according to the current APA style (the library has a copy of the APA Manual).

    Assignment #2 Instructions

The purpose of the three research critiques is to help you become familiar with analyzing

research reports, enabling you to quickly identify where key information is typically located

in such articles. Through this process, you will answer pertinent questions related to each

type of study. This foundational skill will prepare you for rapid critical appraisal (RCA) in NU

745 and guide you in selecting the appropriate RCA tools to evaluate the validity, reliability,

and applicability of articles to practice.

We will use established reporting guidelines to frame the questions you should consider for

each research design. These guidelines were developed to standardize and improve the

quality of published literature by ensuring that studies include the critical information

needed to assess their validity (Are the study results credible?) and reliability (What are the

    study results?).

The EQUATOR Network (Enhancing the QUAlity and Transparency Of health Research)

website, available at https://www.equator-network.org/, provides access to a

comprehensive collection of reporting standards categorized by study or article type. I

intentionally use the term “article type” because systematic reviews and meta-analyses are

    not considered studies.

The reporting guidelines for the three research critiques in this course are outlined in Table

    1. To complete these critiques, download the CONSORT 2010 and PRISMA checklists from

the EQUATOR website in MS Word format. The COREQ checklist is available in the

Research Critique folder on Blackboard, along with PDFs of the three articles listed in

    Table 2.

Table 1 identifies the study/article types and the corresponding reporting guidelines. The

questions in Table 1 are specifically aligned with each reporting guideline and must be

answered using the information provided in the study/article.

For example, in Week 3, students will access the first article: Reid, C., Fenech, M., Jones,

L., & Salehi, N. (2020). Nurse practitioner interventions for smokers with chronic hepatitis

    C. Journal of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners, 32(5), 380389.

. Students will determine the type of study

or article, select the appropriate reporting guideline from the three listed in Table 1, and

answer the “Questions to Answer” listed in the final column of Table 1 for the

    corresponding guideline.

Background Paper: Select a non-pharmaceutical intervention that can be implemented in primary care by an advanced practice nurse to improve health care and write a PICOT question on the topic. Review the material in this course covering the process of coming up with a good clinical inquiry using the PICOT approach. If you are not submitting the draft, you are responsible for reaching out to the instructor for approval of your topic. The topic selected for this background paper will be expanded upon in the Final Theory and Research Paper. The background paper will introduce the topic, explain why it is important and provide a relevant theory as well as at least two peer-reviewed articles from the last five years that support this intervention. Follow the rubric to see what specifics should be included. The paper should be at least two pages in length (excluding the cover page and references). Your references should include your two peer-reviewed articles, the source for your theory, as well as any statistics or facts. Use APA 7th Professional Edition, but no abstract is required for the background paper. Draft Background Paper: The Draft Background Paper is a unique and optional opportunity to get instructor feedback before the final background paper is due. Feedback on a Draft Background Paper will be provided by course faculty, but only if the draft is submitted to Brightspace submission folder on time (see schedule). Refer to the notes in this syllabus regarding the Theory and Research Paper as an Outcomes Assessment Assignment. Background Paper Rubric Criteria 2 1 0 Introduction and importance of the problem and topic for advanced practice nursing with a PICOT question Strong introduction of a problem in nursing and the topics key question(s) using appropriate PICOT format. Clearly delineates the importance of the topic to advanced practice nursing. Conveys problem area, topic, and key question(s) but missing some elements of the PICOT question or more explanation of the importance to advanced practice nursing. Does not adequately convey topic. Support: Literature Review Strong peer-reviewed, research- based sources for problem investigation with at least two research studies on the topic of the proposed intervention. Sources generally acceptable but not peer-reviewed research (evidence) based or only one research study provided. Sources are insignificant or unsubstantiated. Theory Identify a theory that can be used to Theory identified but does not Theory was not identified.
  • Collaborative Research Paper – Draft

Students will work in groups of 2 to 3 to write a collaborative research paper. If a student cannot find a partner or partners, the instructor will make assignments. Groups will choose a topic from those listed and submit as an assignment for Module 2. Additional assignments related to your topic of choice will begin in Module 3 of the course. If the group would like to work on a topic that is not listed, you must receive approval from the course faculty. All papers must focus on nursing research. Quantitative, qualitative, or mixed-methods research from peer-reviewed, referenced journal articles or books must be used to support your arguments.

    Topics include:

    • Benefits of Mentoring in Nursing
    • Importance of Diversity in the Nursing Profession
    • Use of AI to Improve Patient Outcomes
    • Effects of Telehealth on Nursing Practice
    • Challenges and Issues in Rural Nursing ( topic I picked)
    • Potential for Social Media to Promote Healthy Lifestyles

Each group is required to have at least 6 research articles related to the topic of choice. The articles must be cited in-text of your final paper submission, and must be included in the reference list. All citations and references should follow APA 7th edition formatting. Journal articles should not be greater than 10 years old unless they are historical, groundbreaking research.

Upon submission of the paper, each group member will complete a peer evaluation for other group members. Peer evaluation will account for 10% of the 100 points. For this reason, it is important to put forth maximum effort and demonstrate that you are an excellent teammate. Often, people do not like group projects due to slackers who will not pull their weight. Your team member/members will let the faculty know if you have met your targets on this assignment.

The final grade will be assigned to all group members, and then the peer evaluation points will be applied. For instance, if a group receives a 90 on the paper from the professor and the group evaluated you with a score of 10, you will receive a 100 on your paper. If on the other hand, the group receives a score of 90 on the paper and the group evaluates you with a score of 5, you would receive a 95 on the paper.

    Formatting

The entire document should follow APA 7th edition formatting, including leveled headings, introduction, and conclusion. (Suggestion: Use the areas outlined below as the leveled headings in your paper.) The paper must be 5 to 7 pages in length, typed and double-spaced using 12-point Times New Roman font, and must address each of the following areas:

    • Research question or purpose statement related to your topic (what do you want to know) – this should be clearly written in your introductory paragraph.
    • Review of the Literature – Summary of current research found in the literature regarding your topic.
    • Relevance of the Topic – Provide evidence of relevance to nursing practice and/or nursing education.
    • Need for Further Research – Identify gaps in the research and list specific areas and ideas for future research topics. If the topic has been thoroughly researched, argue the reasons why no further research is needed.
    • Variables Affecting Nurses and/or Clients – Discuss variables that play a role in how your topic affects nurses or clients (age, ethnicity, gender, etc.).
    • Relationship to Quality Care and/or Patient Safety – How does the research of your topic impact the improvement of quality of care?
    • Implications for Nursing Practice – How can the research you discussed in your paper positively impact nursing practice or nursing education? What are ways it can be used in nursing practice and/or nursing education to improve safety, quality, or workflow processes?
    • Conclusion – Summarize key findings and their significance.
