  • Organizing the Evidence to Answer the PICO Question

    The Matrix Method is an organizational system that guides you through the literature review process from start to finish. It is intended to teach you how to read a paper, organize the review using the Matrix Method, analyze it, and create a narrative synthesis. Now you have searched and found the literature that answers the PICO question, you can now synthesize what you have learned and how it fits into your literature review. One strategy is to create a synthesis matrix. A synthesis matrix helps you organize the main points of each book, article, or another information resource you use. It allows you to see how the sources relate to each other and help guide your writing.

    Instructions:

    1. Look at the literature Matrix (John Hopkins University Appendix G) and use the sources found in Discussion 6.
    2. Use the x to compare and contrast findings found in appendix G.
    3. Title the discussion with the PICOT question.
    4. Initial post: Your post should be within a range of 200-240 words.
    5. By looking at the Matrix, carefully look at similarities and differences between the studies.
    6. Do any themes arise from comparing and contrasting are there any similarities or differences.
    7. Write a paragraph synthesizing the information. Remember, this is in preparation for writing the literature review.

  • Sustaining the Nurse to Protect the Patient

    This proposal must be a course on Nurse Burnout to be taught over a time period of one week and will be included in the attached course. Five academic articles within the last five years with verifiable links must be used. This course is to talk about the importance of self care to reduce the risk of burnout and in turn will improve nurse retention and patient outcomes. Be sure to explain the rationale of choosinga community college and my thoughts on this is that ADN nurses have to be bedside ready and are the lowest paid therefore work longer hours and struggle with work life balance. On the flip side BSN prepared nurses have a more opportunities that don’t always include bedside with higher pay.

    During my practicum, I participated in a follow-up visit for a 24-year-old female who returned to review laboratory results obtained at a prior visit for persistent fatigue and dizziness. The laboratory findings confirmed iron deficiency anemia, which aligned with her history of heavy menstrual bleeding. Research shows that for reproductive-aged women, the symptom of heavy menstrual bleeding is highly prevalent and a major contributor to iron deficiency (Munro et al., 2023). Knowing this, I initially felt confident interpreting the results. However, the encounter challenged me to move beyond diagnosis and focus on patient education and shared decision-making.

    This experience highlighted the importance of correlating laboratory data with a thorough history, particularly in identifying chronic blood loss as an underlying cause. Reviewing the results with the patient reinforced the need to communicate complex information in an understandable way while addressing her concerns about long-term management. Numeric laboratory results can be challenging to interpret, and it may cause anxiety and confusion for the patient, so I made sure to take my time so she could fully understand (Van Der Mee et al., 2024). I also recognized that failure to explore gynecologic contributors could result in delayed resolution of symptoms and recurrent anemia.

    From this encounter, I learned that anemia management extends beyond prescribing iron supplementation and requires addressing the underlying etiology. Patient adherence is closely tied to understanding the diagnosis and treatment rationale (Patel et al., 2025). Moving forward, my action plan includes strengthening my counseling skills, routinely assessing menstrual history in reproductive-aged females, and ensuring appropriate referrals are made to address contributing factors. This approach will support improved outcomes and continuity of care.
