Library Assignment Instructions for Nursing Students

    Purpose:

The purpose of this library assignment is to help nursing students to develop their research skills and to become familiar with different credible data sources available through the Library page at the FNU.edu website. In addition, this assignment will help students to apply the PICOT (Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome, and Time) question format to develop a research question and to locate and evaluate scholarly sources.

    Instructions:

    1. Topic Selection: Select a nursing theorist of choice and research him/her. Include a summary of your research and how it correlates to the subject you are studying. Identify their key contribution to nursing and explain its importance in healthcare. Your topic should be broad enough to allow for an in-depth exploration but narrow enough to be manageable within the scope of an 250-500-word (1 page) research paper.
    2. Searching for Literature: Use the Library page at the FNU.edu website to search for scholarly sources related to your topic. You must utilize at least 3 scholarly sources that have been published within the last 5 years. You may use databases such as CINAHL, MEDLINE, Embase, Clinical Key, The Cochrane Library. Be sure to use appropriate keywords and to apply search filters to limit your search to scholarly, peer-reviewed articles.
    3. Evaluating Sources: Once you have identified potential sources, use the CRAAP test (Currency, Relevance, Authority, Accuracy, and Purpose) to evaluate their credibility and relevance to your research question. Be sure to select sources that are relevant to your topic, written by credible authors, and based on rigorous research methods.
    4. Writing the Paper: Your research paper should follow APA 7 guidelines and include the following sections: Introduction, Literature Review, Methodology, Results, Discussion, and Conclusion. Be sure to use in-text citations and to include a reference list at the end of your paper.
    5. Please keep in mind that the paper will be checked for plagiarism, and similarity above 25% will not be accepted for submission.

Grading Criteria: DUE WEEK 6 (10/9)

Your research paper will be graded based on the following criteria:

    • PICOT question format (10 points)
    • Use of at least 3 scholarly sources published within the last 5 years (10 points)

    • PICOT QUESTION development discussion

First things first, go to the literature and learn about your topic area. That is what background questions are to help you do. You can find specific questions you need to answer for your scenario in the list of Scenarios. (This is so your PICOT makes sense and is ethically doable in the clinical setting).

Use this discussion to improve and refine your PICOT. Faculty and Classmate will review & provide suggestions. I recommend you post early so you can get feedback.

      • Post a draft(s) of your PICOT Question, including (P), (I), (C), (O), (T) designation for class member and faculty review in the Discussion Board.
      • Be sure to use p.45 of Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt (2023) text to get the correct order and wording from the templates in Box 2.2.
      • Students and faculty will provide feedback regarding clarity of the question for format improvement.
      • Improve the PICOT Question and repost for additional feedback.
      • Use the Assignment tab to submit the final version of your PICOT question for Faculty approval.
      • Find & upload pdfs of 4 articles (see Evidence Synthesis Table assignment) to help you demonstrate that there is existing evidence to support your answering your Final PICOT.
    • Qualitative building exercise

This Building Exercise is completed with the designated Research Partner (RP) and individual participation is also required. Each RP must post the group’s combined response, contributing meaningfully to the work. EachRP must then participate individually in the discussion by responding to comments directed to the group posting and by engaging with other student posts.

The exercise uses the assigned article to examine how an MSN-prepared nurse appraises a research article using a qualitative research design. Because multiple qualitative research designs exist, all comments must address the specific design used in this study, rather than qualitative research in general.

      Assigned Article:

Rezaei, Z., Jalali, A., JalaliJ., & Sadeghi, M. (2020). Haemodialysis patients experience with fatigue: A phenomenological study. British Journal of Nursing, 29, 684-690.

This study uses a qualitative research design called phenomenology.

Each RP group is assigned a specific section of the appraisal checklist to complete and post under the designated discussion topic. Each posting must include a brief statement identifying the contributions of both RPs. This transparency supports accountability and strengthens group discussion.

Here is the RP assignment list: Spring ’26 QUAL Building Exercise Assignment List

    • Nursing Question

As a nurse, how often have you thought to yourself, If I had anything to do about it, things would work a little differently? Increasingly, nurses are beginning to realize that they do, in fact, have a role and a voice.

Many nurses encounter daily experiences that motivate them to take on an advocacy role in hopes of impacting policies, laws, or regulations that impact healthcare issues of interest. Of course, doing so means entering the less familiar world of policy and politics. While many nurses do not initially feel prepared to operate in this space effectively, the reward is the opportunity to shape and influence future health policy.
