SSC 230: Culture and Civics Social Problem Presentation and Paper 200 Points Total Overview: Table Topics Presentation and Paper: Students will select one social problem, using the definition of social problem from Joel Best (reading from week 1). Students should select a topic they can use course materials to analyze in some way. Students will write one paper and a brief presentation on the topic. Students will find one recent news article related to their chosen social problem. Students will also find one outside academic source, a peer reviewed journal article on this topic as well. You can find both academic, peer-reviewed sources and news articles using databases in the library course guide: Home – SSC 230 – LibGuides at Nebraska Methodist College Students will write a 3-4 page (double-spaced) analysis of the social problem. You should briefly summarize the news item, explain how it relates to a class source, what the academic item adds to the conversation of the social problem, your opinion on the subject, and some questions for the class to discuss. This paper will be submitted in Brightspace and cited in proper APA format. The student will record a brief 5-10 minute presentation explaining the news item about the current social problem, how this relates to material for class, what the academic research you found about this topic adds to your understanding of the social problem, and some questions for the class to discuss on the discussion board that week. Students do not need to give their own opinions on the matter in their oral presentation, but they can if they wish. Instructions for how to record the presentation can be found in handouts. It is recommended that students use a Powerpoint or other slideshow software while presenting. The link to this presentation will be posted in the discussion board on the date assigned. With the topic, you want to make sure you dont have too wide of a topic. For example, talking about discrimination in general is much too wide. You want to talk about a specific social problem, such as discrimination against a certain class of people in a certain place/time. Below I have some examples that could work for a paper, but the topic is up to you. Please talk to me if you have questions. Below that I have a hypothetical outline for what a successful paper would discuss with one of these topics. Chosen topic is Human trafficking Example outline: A successful paper on the topic of the gender pay gap, as an example, might follow this outline: Introduction paragraph to the topic with an attention-getter. Perhaps you start with a statistic about the gender pay gap that is shocking, troubling, etc. Explanation/definition of the social problem you are discussing, including a brief summary of the news article you find about the social problem. You might summarize an article in the news about the most recent gender pay gap data in the US. Some paragraphs explaining how research/academic discussion of this topic adds to what you read in the news article. You should talk about a course source that relates to your topic and how it relates. For example, you might talk about an article or video we watch on the gender pay gap or gender discrimination and how that adds to/is different from the news article. You should also find an outside piece of academic research which talks about this. For example, there is a research article you can find that uses experimental studies to determine how much of a penalty to wages motherhood is for women. You should summarize this academic item and explain what it adds to the topic. Discuss your own perspective/opinion on the topic End with questions you would want the class to answer/consider and finish with a conclusion paragraph that will summarize what you discussed throughout the paper. NU332: Week 2 Discussion Board Prompt
Week 2 Discussion Board Prompt
Instructions: Please respond to the course faculty prompt in scholarly writing with 150-200 words (about the length of 1 well-developed paragraph). Your response should reflect the readings, VoiceThreads and videos in the course content for the week. Your response should provide further evidence to support, examine, or respectfully refute the prompt. Your response should conclude with 1 thoughtful question to advance the discussion. Your response must include at least 1 reference using APA formatting.
Week 2 Prompt: Consider the VT, readings, and video for Week 2 about values and moral development, values clarification and transcultural and spiritual issues in nursing care. We are reminded that different systems of values and morals can collide in healthcare. As nursing professionals, we may be confronted with different systems of values. We can feel conflicted about the cultural values of our patients, our employing institutions, other social institutions and the ways in which they view health and healing. The YouTube video, Nurse dragged from hospital by police, is a stark example of an ethical situation with conflicting systems of values faced by a nurse, her reaction based on her values, morals and ethics, and the police response. After reflecting on the video, what are your thoughts about how you can best prepare yourself to manage everyday ethics and ethical situations in nursing? After reflecting, where did you develop your values about health and health care? What strategies can you use in your nursing practice to manage differences between your own values, the values of your patients and the values of the institution you work for? Use the readings to guide you in developing your responses. Provide examples as needed.

Using the client information provided, respond to the critical thinking questions. Each response should be original (in your own words) and a minimum of three sentences in length. Client Information Meet your client, Blake. You have just received a report from the emergency department (ED) on a client named Blake. According to the ED report, Blake is being admitted due to chronic renal failure. He is married and an employed 58-year-old man, and he has a long-standing history of Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM). During the past three days, he reports that he has developed swelling and decreased sensation in his legs and has difficulty walking, which he describes as slight loss of mobility. Blake: Admitting medical diagnosis: chronic renal failure, 58-year-old male, long-standing history of type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) Critical Thinking Questions List five questions that will help you assess and plan the immediate and long-term care for Blake? Based on the information provided and the questions listed, what are the priority problems? Identify at least two resources you can use to find out more about the pathophysiology of renal failure? How do you know the sources are credible? As you are assessing Blake, who is your best source and why? Write one collaborative problem statement for Blake. If you do not know the potential complications of chronic renal failure, look them up in a medical-surgical or pathophysiology resource. Explain why you would not use a nursing diagnosis to describe the problem. Aside from his physical condition, what is at least one psychosocial concern Blake might have right now? In other words, what else might Blake want to have resolved that couldfor himbe more important than his chronic renal failure?
