• Select one of the personality disorders from the DSM-5-TR (e.g., paranoid, antisocial, narcissistic). Then, select a therapy modality (individual, family, or group) that you might use to treat a client with the disorder you selected.

Succinctly, in 12 pages, address the following:

• Briefly describe the personality disorder you selected, including the DSM-5-TR diagnostic criteria.
• Explain a therapeutic approach and a modality you might use to treat a client presenting with this disorder. Explain why you selected the approach and modality, justifying their appropriateness.
• Next, briefly explain what a therapeutic relationship is in psychiatry. Explain how you would share your diagnosis of this disorder with the client in order to avoid damaging the therapeutic relationship. Compare the differences in how you would share your diagnosis with an individual, a family, and in a group session.

An older man brought his wife to the Emergency Department after she complained all evening of having heartburn. The physician determined the wife had suffered a massive heart attack and initiated orders for admission. He told the husband that her condition was grave because the heart attack damaged most of the heart muscle. The physician showed the husband a do not resuscitate form, pointing out what they could do for his wife. The nurse had the husband sign the forms and told him that his wife would be sent to the intensive care unit. The husband stayed with the wife after she was admitted to the intensive care unit. After 2 hours, the wife told him, “I’m really not feeling very good.” The husband yelled for help and two nurses came into the room. One of the nurses held his wifes hand saying that it will be ok. At this point, the husband became irritated, telling them to do something to save her. The nurse sat with him and showed him the DNR form. I can’t read what it says without my glasses.” Confused, the husband said, “I thought it was telling me what they would do for her, not that they wouldn’t do anything to save her.”
