    Formatting Practice Questions: PICOT Framework

Once a practice question is identified, the population, intervention, comparison, outcome, and time (PICOT) framework is used to support the search for the best available evidence to answer the question. The PICOT framework provides a standardized format for formulating a practice question, as seen below.

    In _____ (P), how does _____ (I) compared to _____ (C) affect _____ (O) within _____ (T)?

Additional examples of PICOT framework sentences may be found in Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt (2023), Table 2.2.

Each component of a PICOT question is patient-focused and measurable. Click each plus (+) sign in the activity below to learn more about each PICOT component.

    P: Population

    • Defines the Person, Population, or Problem succinctly; includes characteristics to limit population such as age, gender, ethnicity, diagnosis, or symptoms. Who is the client, and what is the problem?

    I: Intervention

    • Identifies an Intervention or treatment. What treatment change, educational offering, or observation would help address the client’s problem?

    C: Comparison

    • Offers a Comparison to the selected intervention. Is there a standard or alternative intervention? Not all practice questions will have a comparison group or comparison intervention.

    O: Outcome

    • Identifies measurable Outcomes. What does the intervention hope to accomplish, improve, or affect? What is the clients ideal state?

    T: Time

    • Specifies the Timeframe for investigating influence and impact upon identified outcomes. Not all practice questions will have a specified timeframe.

IMPORTANT NOTE: While a timeframe is not always necessary, you are required to have one for your practice question.

  • VTE Prevention Client Teaching Assignment

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) (2023) report that 60,000 – 100,000 Americans die each year from venous thromboembolisms and the resulting pulmonary embolisms. Nurses play a key role in the prevention of the development of VTEs.

For this assignment, create a 1- (one) page client teaching handout about prevention and early recognition of venous thromboembolisms in the newly postoperative client. Because this is for a client, use clear, concise language. Guidelines from the CDC for creating client teaching information are available

    .

You may use Word, PowerPoint, Canva, etc. to create the handout as long as it can be uploaded below. You can include facts, figures, pictures, etc. to enhance the handout if you choose.

    • Include these headings at a minimum:
    • Risk Factors
    • Signs and Symptoms to Report to Your Nurse
    • Actions Your Nurse Might Perform to Prevent the Development of a Clot
    • References
    • Give credit to your sources using APA 7th edition format.

  • Logic Model -Improving Nurses Knowledge of Managing Patients…

Logic models are snapshots of projects and help guide the implementation of the project.

A logic model presents a picture of how your effort or initiative is supposed to work. It explains why your strategy is a good solution to the problem at hand. Effective logic models make an explicit, often visual, statement of the activities that will bring about change and the results you expect to see for the community and its people. A logic model keeps participants in the effort moving in the same direction by providing a common language and point of reference.

More than an observer’s tool, logic models become part of the work itself. They energize and rally support for an initiative by declaring precisely what you’re trying to accomplish and how.

  • Half-Life, Steady State, & Drug Interactions Case Analyses

    Assignment Instructions

Read all three of the following cases and questions. Then, type your numbered responses to the questions in a document. Use complete sentences and support your answers with the textbook, and/or other scholarly sources. This should not be written in the format of an essay, but you must support your answers with the textbook and/or scholarly sources. This should be no more than 1-3 sentences. Format your in-text citations in APA-style and include an APA-style reference page in your document.

    Case 1: Half-Life

JH is a 45 yo male who is currently on paroxetine (Paxil ) 40mg daily for depression. He has been on this med for about 6 months and has gained about 30lbs despite diet and a solid exercise routine. His Physician has attributed the weight gain to the paroxetine. He wishes to try fluoxetine (Prozac) to see if he can successfully treat his depression and lose weight.

How long would it take for the paroxetine to reach a level of about 2.5mg so you may safely start the fluoxetine regimen assuming the half life of paroxetine is 24hrs?

    Case 2: Steady State

HT is a 26 yo female who has just started phenytoin (Dilantin) for her newly diagnosed seizure disorder. As she is just starting therapy, there is still a risk she may develop further seizures. How many days after starting the phenytoin would you expect her to be virtually free of that seizure risk?

    Case 3: Drug Interaction

WR is a 67 yo male who has been placed on warfarin (Coumadin) for stroke prevention due to his atrial fibrillation. He has been on this medication about 3 months now and his last INR (international normalized ratio) was therapeutic via blood draw at 2.6 (goal INR 2-3).

He calls your clinic as he has recently started the antibiotic trimethoprim/sulfamethoxozole (Septra DS) 800mg twice daily for a sinus infection.

Are you concerned about a drug interaction at this time and if so, how is this drug interaction occurring? Also, do you expect to see a change in his INR level? Will it go up or down?
