  • Activity 9.1 Policy Brief Milestone

provided 3 examples, please complete document.

    1. Your objective in writing this policy brief is to inform legislators so that they are able to consider policy solutions that will shape or guide specific decisions.
    2. Your audience for the brief includes government officials at the local, state, regional, or national level. Remember to write in a way that is easily understandable to government officials who may have little understanding of nursing, healthcare, or scientific evidence/research. Simply putthe brief has to be easy to read and easy to understand. Brevity, clarity, and a good visual presentation are critical.
    • Before you get started, review the tips and tools offered in
    • from the Writing Center at the University of North CarolinaChapel Hill).
    1. The maximum length of your policy brief should be 2000 words (excluding Title Page, Table of Contents, Executive Summary, and Bibliography).
    2. You may use some of the alternate formatting presented with graphic design for your policy brief if you are so creatively and technically inclined. This is not required. There are no grading criteria that will give you an advantage or disadvantage for not doing so. Content is key here. This is simply an option for those who would enjoy that expression of creativity. It adds an element of professionalism and has a bit of a wow factor, but again, in no way required.

    MY EXAMPLE

For this paper, please write about a nurse leader that I observed during my senior practicum. The leader is an ICU charge nurse. Please do not include the hospital name, the unit name, or the leaders name in the paper. Introduce the nurse leader as a charge nurse that I observed closely during my practicum experience. Explain that the charge nurse was responsible for overseeing the unit, supporting staff nurses, coordinating admissions, and responding to emergencies. Based on my observations, describe her leadership style primarily as transformational leadership, but also demonstrate that she occasionally used autocratic leadership when immediate decisions were necessary in critical situations. Description of Leadership Style Explain transformational leadership and how it applies to this charge nurse. Include characteristics such as supporting staff, promoting teamwork, and being actively involved in patient care and unit operations. Provide examples showing her leadership abilities: She was highly involved in helping nurses with new admissions, especially when the unit was busy. She frequently stepped in to assist nurses who were overwhelmed or managing multiple high-acuity patients. She made herself available for questions and guidance and actively supported teamwork within the unit. Positive Interaction Describe an experience where the charge nurse took me to a Code Save a Brain emergency response. During this situation she demonstrated a more autocratic leadership style, which was necessary because rapid decisions were required. She provided clear direction to the team and ensured that critical interventions were completed quickly. Explain that this was especially important during night shift, when it can sometimes be difficult to reach providers quickly. As the ICU charge nurse, she was required to respond because intubation was anticipated. This example demonstrates that strong leadership and decisive communication are essential during emergencies to maintain patient safety. Also mention that outside of clinical situations she was very supportive of her coworkers and frequently checked in on staff members both professionally and personally, which helped contribute to a positive work environment. Negative Interaction One area for improvement is that the charge nurse can sometimes be very sarcastic and extremely direct in her communication style. While this may not always be intended negatively, it can occasionally come across as blunt or intimidating to staff members. Discuss how communication style plays a significant role in leadership effectiveness and how tone can influence team morale. Use research discussing the importance of respectful communication and emotional intelligence in nursing leadership. Work Environment Describe three characteristics of the unit environment that demonstrate a generally healthy work environment: Strong teamwork among nurses. The charge nurse actively supporting staff during busy or stressful shifts. Staff feeling comfortable asking for help when needed. However, also mention that high acuity and stress can sometimes lead to communication that feels abrupt or rushed. Leadership Strategies to Improve the Environment Provide four strategies to further strengthen the work environment: Encourage open and supportive communication among staff. Promote emotional intelligence and self-awareness in leadership communication. Continue fostering teamwork and collaboration. Provide mentorship and support for nurses experiencing stress or burnout. Explain how transformational leadership can help implement these strategies and maintain a healthy work environment. Conclusion Summarize the importance of leadership in creating a safe and supportive nursing environment. Reflect on what I learned from observing this charge nurse. Explain that while no leader is perfect, strong leadership skills such as teamwork, decisiveness during emergencies, and staff support are critical to patient safety and nursing success. Conclude by stating whether I would want to work in a unit with leadership like this and why. Additional Requirements Minimum of 5 pages (not including title page and references) APA 7th edition format At least 8 peer-reviewed nursing journal references References should focus on nursing leadership, transformational leadership, communication, and healthy work environments.

Health education is any combination of learning experiences designed to help people in a community improve their health by increasing their knowledge or influencing their attitudes (WHO, n.d.). Education is key to health promotion, disease prevention, and disaster preparedness. The health indicator framework identified in Healthy People 2030 prompts action in health services accessibility, clinical preventive services, environmental quality, injury or violence prevention, maternal, infant, and child health, mental health, nutrition, substance abuse prevention, and tobacco use cessation or prevention.

Nurses provide accurate evidence-based information and education in formal and informal settings. They draw upon evidence-based practice to provide health promotion and disease prevention activities to create social and physical environments that are conducive to improving and maintaining community health. When provided with the tools to be successful, people demonstrate lifestyle changes (self-care) that promote health and help reduce readmissions. They are better able to tolerate stressors, including environmental changes, and enjoy a better quality of life. Also, in times of crisis, a resilient community is a safer community (Flanders, 2018; Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, n.d.).

This assessment provides an opportunity for you to apply teaching and learning concepts to a hypothetical presentation of a health promotion plan.

Note: This is the second part of a two-part assessment. You must successfully complete Assessment 1 before completing this assessment.

    Scenario

In this assessment, you will develop your presentation of the health promotion plan based on the research you conducted for Assessment 1. You will plan the presentation for the community you focused on for Assessment 1.

You will resume the role of a community nurse tasked with addressing the specific health concern in your community. This time, you will present, via educational outreach, your health promotion plan you completed research for in Assessment 1 to your chosen community. In this presentation, you will simulate the presentation as though it would be live and face-to-face. You must determine an effective teaching strategy, communicate the plan with professionalism and cultural sensitivity, and evaluate the objectives of the plan. Please remember the nursing process. You must evaluate and revise the plan, as applicable, and propose improvement for future educational sessions. To engage your audience, you need to include any handouts with your presentation and a voice-over recording and speaker notes to communicate your plan.

    Instructions

    Complete the following:

    • Prepare a 1214 slide PowerPoint presentation with a voice-over and detailed speaker notes that reflects your presentation. This presentation is the implementation of the plan you created in Assessment 1. The speaker notes should be well-organized and submitted as a separate Word document. Be sure to include a transcript of the voice-over (please refer to the PowerPoint resources in the Academic Resources). The transcript must be submitted on a separate Word document.
    • Simulate the face-to-face educational session, addressing the health concern and health goals of your selected community individual or group.
    • Imagine collaborating with the participants in setting goals for the session, evaluating session outcomes, and suggesting possible revisions to improve future sessions.

The requirements outlined below correspond to the grading criteria in the scoring guide, so be sure to address each point. Read the performance-level descriptions for each criterion in the scoring guide to see how your work will be assessed.

    • Present a health promotion plan tailored for an individual or group within a community.
    • Tailor the presentation to the needs of your chosen community audience.
    • Adhere to scholarly and disciplinary writing standards and APA formatting requirements.
    • Evaluate educational session outcomes and attainment of agreed-upon health goals, anticipating potential input from participants.
    • How do you think participants would react to the session?
    • Which aspects of the session would you change?
    • How might those changes improve future outcomes?
    • Evaluate educational session outcomes in terms of progress made toward Healthy People 2030 objectives and leading health indicators (LHIs).
    • What changes would you recommend to better align the session with Healthy People 2030 objectives and LHIs?

    Additional Requirements

    Presentation Format and Length

You may use Microsoft PowerPoint or other suitable presentation software to create your slides (PowerPoint recommended). If you choose an application other than PowerPoint, check with your instructor to avoid potential file compatibility issues.

The number of slides in your presentation will be dictated by nature and scope of your health promotion plan. Title and references slides are required as follows:

    • Title slide.
    • Health promotion plan title.
    • Your name.
    • Date.
    • Course number and title.
    • References (at the end of your presentation). Be sure to apply correct APA formatting to your references.
    • Remember to include a separate Word document of your speaker notes; this needs to submitted with your PowerPoint.

    Supporting Evidence

Support your plan with at least three professional or scholarly references published within the last 5 years, which may include peer-reviewed articles, course study resources, and Healthy People 2030 resources.

Be sure to proofread your PowerPoint presentation and speaker notes before submitting your assessment to minimize errors that could distract readers and make it difficult for them to focus on the substance of your presentation.

  • QI Processes: Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and Displaying Data

This is an individual assignment. Using your group’s assigned case study (Patients with venous thromboembolism (VTE), create a cause-effect diagram or “fishbone” diagram. The fishbone diagram enables visualization of potential causes of a specific problem. This is part of your root cause analysis (RCA) you will include in your final report. Be sure you understand how and where this aspect fits. Using root cause analysis techniques in clinical audit* is one resource that defines and describes the fishbone diagram. The Quality Improvement Essentials Toolkit* contains instructions and a template for creating your fishbone diagram (see “Cause and Effect Diagram” on IHI website).

*Item found in QI Project Resources

In your initial post, you should include the following:

    • Fishbone diagram (i.e., cause and effect diagram)
    • Provide a narrative describing all potential factors/causes contributing to the problem identified in your case study
