    Women in Early Twentieth Century

    Purpose

    This discussion asks you to apply the concepts from the module’s readings to a hypothetical situation in the past. This practice helps you to develop the skill of engaging with sources. You have the opportunity here to practice applying, translating, and re-working what you have learned to function in unexpected ways.

    Learning Objectives

    1 Recall key events, figures, and ideas of the early twentieth-century United States.

    2 Contextualize, criticize, defend, and debate significant ideas found in historical primary sources of the early twentieth-century United States.

    3 Evaluate competing narratives to analyze different types of historical sources.

    Discussion Prompt

    After reading all the available course materials, discuss the following as if you were alive as a middle class and middle-aged (35-45) white woman during the early twentieth century:

    What do “you” think about President Roosevelt’s foreign policy, especially as it relates to U.S. imperialism. How would “you” (as a middle class white women) be involved in either supporting or protesting U.S. expansion? (specific examples please)

    What do “you” see as differences between middle class women and working class immigrant women in the early 20th century? Similarities?

    Do “you” (as a historical middle class white woman) have anything in common with women of other ethnicities? Why or why not?

    What is “your” opinion of the young women these (early 20th century) days?

    Criteria/Assessment

    Failure to complete the requirements will result in lower scores.

    –The discussion should be 250 words in length. The discussion should answer the question in language that takes a strong position and makes your answer to the question abundantly clear. Avoid writing a response that offers only a general discussion of the topic. Rather, write in such a way that makes clear you are trying to prove a pointto convince somebody of your perspective.

    –Students will also respond to a classmates post. Your response to a classmates post should be about a paragraph long and of substance. Be cordial in your response to a classmates post.

    –The discussion needs to reference at least one piece of historical evidence drawn from the list of required module readings/videos. The evidence will help explain your answer to the question. You must cite evidence with parenthetical citations.
