  • discussion

Complete your Week 1 required discussion prompt.

    • In your own words, describe the primary difference between consequentialist and non-consequentialist approaches to ethics.
    • Choose one of the major theories associated with consequentialism: what objections might be made to this theory?
    • Choose one of the major theories associated with non-consequentialism: what objections might be made to this theory?
    • In addition to your main response, you must also post substantive responses to at least two of your classmates’ posts in this thread. Your response should include elements such as follow-up questions, further exploration of topics from the initial post, or requests for further clarification or explanation on some points made by the classmates.
    • Use proper grammar and proper capitalization.
    • I recommend you create your posting and replies in a Word document, run spell & grammar check, and then copy and paste it into the discussion forum. Please do not post attachments in the discussion forum as your peers may not be able to view them.
    • Ensure your references are formatted in APA 7th edition. (Visit
    • for helpful formatting guidance.)
    • Develop substantive peer responses which means extend the discussion or add to the points made. Writing something like “That was a great response, Jane. I appreciate the way you presented the information. I now have a better understanding of the content” is not substantive. While this response has a few sentences to it, this is basically an extended version of “good job”. A more appropriate response would be “Thank you for this contribution to our discussion, Jane. Your points about research topics are valid. In performing research, it is critical to ensure the sources selected are both timely and relevant. Research within the last five years from trusted sources is ideal. Further, it is important to use peer-reviewed information when possible, as this increases the credibility of the research conducted”.

  • Case Study Rubric

You are required to draft and revise your case study in a Google Doc from the start. Because Google Docs allows us to review version histories, we can ensure that you have not copied or transcribed your paper directly from ChatGPT or another illicit GenAI source. Copy-and-paste the final version of your paper from the Google Doc to a Word Document or a PDF-convertible word processor to submit on Moodle. Include a link to that Google doc at the top of the document you submit and make sure to grant us editing access to it so that we can review its version history (for step-by-step instructions on how to grant editing access, see this document). We will refuse to grade submissions that (i) do not include a link to a Google Doc at the top, (ii) the linked Google Doc does not grant us editing access or (iii) the version history of the Google Doc indicates the paper text was copy-and-pasted or directly transcribed from another source. These submissions will automatically receive a 0, no exceptions. Basic Information You will be writing a case study for this course. The goal of case studies is to bring to bear the moral theory and arguments from the course material to a real-life morally messy case. You will choose one of several cases to focus on. The list of cases you can choose from is on the case study instructions document, which will be available from the beginning of the course. After presenting the case and its morally relevant features, you will discuss and analyze two opposing stances one may take on the case. For example, if the case is about an abortion, one stance may be that the abortion is morally permissible, and the other stance may be that the abortion is morally wrong. At the end of the case study, you will argue in favor of one of these two stances that is, you will give reasons for thinking that one stance is most plausible. For example, you might argue that the abortion is morally permissible in the case. Word Count: 1000 1200 words, excluding bibliography, in-text citations, and footnotes *Do NOT exceed 1200 words (TAs are instructed to stop reading after 1200 words they will only grade the first 800 words) Format: 12-point font, Times New Roman, Double-spaced, 1-inch margins, include page numbers Include: a link to the Google Doc where you drafted your paper at the top, a title, your name, your student ID, page numbers in the bottom right-hand corner Citations: cite sources using any standard citation method (e.g., APA, MLA, Chicago)
