  • Between Freedom and Exhaustion: Byung-Chul Han on Neoliberal…

Paper should go in this direction:

This paper examines Byung-Chul Hans analysis of neoliberal subjectivity by focusing on the paradoxical relationship between freedom and exhaustion in contemporary society. Han argues that modern subjects no longer experience power primarily as external coercion or prohibition, but as an internalized imperative to perform, optimize, and realize themselves. What appears as freedom increasingly functions as a subtle form of self-exploitation.
The paper reconstructs Hans concept of the society of performance and explores how the promise of autonomy and self-realization produces new forms of psychic suffering, such as burnout, depression, and chronic fatigue. Particular attention is given to the transformation of power from disciplinary control to self-imposed pressure, and to the ways in which responsibility for failure and suffering is individualized.
Rather than treating exhaustion as a purely psychological or medical condition, the paper interprets it as a social symptom embedded in neoliberal forms of subjectivity. By situating Hans arguments within broader debates on freedom, subject formation, and mental health, the paper aims to show how contemporary experiences of fatigue and insufficiency reveal structural contradictions at the heart of neoliberal society. • A Happy Thinker? Hannah Arendt on Why We Should Think Even…

Arendt does not argue that thinking will make me happy, and she even suggests that, as a non-thinker, I might be happier.

So why should I think at all?

In this paper, I must argue:

    (1) why thinking is still necessary and important even when it is uncomfortable and produces no clear results, and

    (2) what the biggest loss would be if I did not think.

The paper must be written in the first person (I, me, my) and must perform Arendts argument by doing thinking on her quotes, rather than summarizing or reporting her views.

    Requirements:

  • What is Philosophy

Philosophy is a HUGE area of study and it has been going on for at least two THOUSAND years. In universities in the United States and Europe, there is definitely a fixed idea of the history of philosophy. To say the history of philosophy is Euro-Centric would be an understatement. Huge areas of philosophy in China, India, Africa, Indigenous Americas, and elsewhere are often seen as secondary. And even in the “Western” canon, women and minority groups are still deeply under-represented. Things are getting a bit better (in the last 20 years or so) but they are still not great. But in my view, we still need to understand the standard history of philosophy EVEN if it does need to be fixed. It is the water we are swimming in ALL OF THE TIME. Politics, economics, and pretty much everything began with a philosophical ideal. And we should know what they are.So watch this short overview of philosophy video ( Video link: ) And for our FIRST WRITTEN assignment :Pick one of the areas of philosophy (about 30 are listed in the video) from the video (What is Philosophy from the youtube link above ) and do a LITTLE extra research. THENWrite a short (2 Pages, Double Spaced) paper explaining what you learned.
  • Essay Prompt #2

Here is your short essay question for this week:

What is Thrasymachus’ definition of justice? Why is such a conception problematic? In order to receive full credit, you must cite where in the Bloom translation you are drawing from, and anywhere in the notes or lectures you are using as well to support your argument.

Reminder: do not turn to the internet, as it will be spotted quite quickly and you will receive a zero for the grade.

Please remember the response guidelines: Your essay response is meant to be short. In other words, your response should be around 7-8 sentences. Keep it short, succinct, and make it clear that you have answered the question. The goal here is to ensure you have read, as well as to help you become more focused as a reader and writer.

In the attached file, please only read Book I (pages 3 – 34).
