  • Contemporary focus in psychology

Even simple behaviors are complex at their core (Geher, 2021). We now turn to timeless debates in psychology; they are part of the history of the field and remain influential even as theories and research change and grow over time. As you read through debates and current trends in psychology, consider: How might these conversations inspire future psychology learners and help direct them towards different professional pursuits? Ultimately, some of you may pursue graduate school and some of you may pursue different part-time or full-time positions. Our journeys are inspired by different theories and histories within psychology, and, though we all end up on a different path, we share a love for psychology and for helping others. How will you leave your mark in psychology? We should all strive to be the change in one way or anotherhow can we have a positive impact on the lives of ourselves, those we love, and our communities around us? In the last assessment, you will create a podcast and reflect upon a contemporary focus in psychology – its social significance, the historical and societal influences that led us there, and its continuing impact on social thinking. You’ll end with a plan for how you can be the change in the future to improve the human experience related to this contemporary area of psychology. Reference Geher, G. (2021, January 24). 5 timeless debates in psychology. Psychology Today. Be the Change – Podcast For this assessment, you will reflect upon different concepts discussed throughout the course, their historical relevance and intersection with today’s psychology, and why you need to be part of the positive change moving forward. Submit a 69 minute podcast or audio file where you connect one HISTORICAL school of thought’s founding figures and ideas with one contemporary school of thought’s ideas. Assessment Preparation Step 1: Select one contemporary focus in psychology: Environmental psychology. LGBTQIA+ psychology. Black psychology. Feminist psychology and intersectionality. Decolonizing psychology curriculum/research. • Professional Ethics Reflection

Students will be asked to reflect on using the ethical decision making model as applied to the case provided below the questions. Students will be given a series of questions to consider for the reflection:

    1. How would you utilize the ethical-decision making model with this case? Would you need to use the model, or make the decision on your own?

    2. What are the ethical codes that apply to the case?

    3. How important is a consulting network when you become fully licensed?

    4. What are your feelings about the ethical dilemma’s counselors often find themselves in?

    Case Study

Mary, a 19 year old college student was initially referred to counseling because she was experiencing social isolation and increased levels of stress. During the initial interview, Mary, a native-born U.S. citizen, described herself as an American Muslim feminist woman. She reported having never felt treated differently by her friends, or teachers in the past, perhaps because she was fair-skinned, spoke English without an accent, and came from a family of high socioeconomic status. She also changed her name from Miriam to Mary to be more integrated into American society. After Mary began college, she decided she wanted to learn more about her faith tradition, which eventually led her to wear a hijab (head scarf). She stated the hijab had a large impact on her relationships with friends and on social media. The counselor does not have any experience with the Muslim faith, identifies as a Christian-American, feminist and is Caucasian. The counselor feels nervous about being able to help Mary due to their differences.

  • Contemporary topics in psychology

We now shift from history (and historical systems) to explore some contemporary topics garnering attention in psychology. We will focus on a selection of hot topics that have been making the rounds in modern research. Why do you think we have blended a class on history and systems with these more modern topic areas in psychology? What is the utility for your learning? Hint: Remember that the past informs the present, and also that you can be the positive change. For the third assessment, you will be the facilitator by creating training materials related to one of the hot topics: (1) mind and brain, (2) diversity, equity, and inclusion, and (3) technology and media psychology. You’ll select one audience and then work towards creating a presentation where you describe your topic, evaluate its social significance, analyze its research, apply that research to professional behavior, and articulate future directions. You’ll end via considering what questions such an audience might ask you, and sharing your responses. Assessment Preparation Step 1: Select a topic that you are interested in exploring further. Below is a list to help you in making that choice. Pick any of the sub-topics listed via bullet points under the main topicswhich one do you want to learn more about? Mind and Brain. Cognitive bias. Predictive brain. Artificial intelligence. Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. WEIRD samples. Cross-cultural and cultural psychology. Liberation psychology. Technology and Media Psychology. Violent behavior. Identity construction online. Step 2: Select one audience to design training materials for: High school teachers-in-training. Low-level employees in a specific workplace setting (specify what type of workplace). Managers in a specific workplace setting (specify what type of workplace). Step 3: Locate three peer-reviewed journal articles on your selected topic. Be sure that at least one article represents diversity, equity, and inclusion. To accomplish this goal, find at least one article that either comes from an international journal, uses a non-Western population, or represents clearly the experiences of an underrepresented group in the literature. Note: One article may be from our course readings, but the other two should be from outside of course readings. Slideshow Instructions This will be an oral presentation; youll want to record your presentation and support your words with a slideshow. You may use PowerPoint to create this slideshow, or, if you wish, you may use other options. You are responsible for making your presentation work. Use the Capella University Library: PowerPoint Presentations library guide for more information about how to create a PowerPoint presentation. Design Considerations Consider the following when creating the presentation: Be sure to use the minimum number of words needed. It would be ideal to have no more than six bullet point entries on a slide and no more than 10 words per entry. You can always add more slides to cover any given topic. Be sure to use typefaces that are easy to read. Do not use more than two typefaces of different names (such as Helvetica or Times). Do not use different typefaces that are similar in style. However, it is very helpful to use some appropriate contrasts of sizes and weights of type to focus the viewer’s attention on the most important content within each slide. Consider using pictures and diagrams, in addition to words, to convey relevant information visually. However, minimize the use of decorative elements or effects that distract from meaning. For any visual material within your presentation that you did not create yourself, cite the source. For presentations in a professional context: If you use pictures or diagrams that you did not create yourself, you must seek out, and abide by, applicable copyright restrictions. Use Google Search: Images as a resource for finding free images online. If required by members of your audience, be prepared to make appropriate accommodations. Use current APA style citations and list references in slides at the end of the presentation. Refer to Academic Writer for guidance in using proper APA style. Assessment Instructions For this assessment, you will be designing training materials for your chosen topic. Select your topic, choose your audience, and then create a PowerPoint presentation with audio overlay to deliver your training. Your final product should be 6-8 minutes in length. Describe key points about your topic. What is it? How is it tied to psychology? Evaluate the social significance of the topic for psychology. Describe what you hope your audience will get out of completing your training. What real-world knowledge will someone take away, and why is that useful and important for their future? Analyze research on this topic (from your three scholarly journal articles). The research should further clarify how this topic looks in the real-world and/or why this training is valuable. Apply psychological research to professional behavior. What lessons learned from the research will influence how these employees engage in the workplace? Articulate future directions on individual (the employee), community (the workplace), and global scales to promote positive change. Generate 23 questions your audience might ask and present the answers. Submission Requirements Length: 68 minutes audio with 68 slides for visual support. Written communication: Must be free of errors that detract from the overall message. Oral communication: Must be clearly spoken and paced. Resources and citations: Use a minimum of three scholarly sources. One may be a course reading. One must represent diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts. Format according to current APA guidelines. See Academic Writer. Competencies Measured By successfully completing this assessment, you will demonstrate your proficiency in the following course competencies and scoring guide criteria: Competency 2: Evaluate the social significance of contemporary topics in psychology. Describe key points about a contemporary topic in psychology. Evaluate the social significance of the selected contemporary topic in psychology. Competency 3: Analyze psychological theory and scholarly literature in history, systems, and contemporary topics. Analyze scholarly literature on a contemporary topic in psychology with at least three scholarly sources. Competency 4: Apply psychological theory and research to guide professional behavior. Apply psychological research to professional behavior. Competency 5: Articulate future directions on an individual, community, and global scale to promote positive change. Articulate future directions on an individual, community, and global scale to guide social thinking and promote positive change. Competency 6: Communicate in a manner that is scholarly, professional, and consistent with expectations for professionals in the field of psychology. Deliver presentation appropriate to the audience with clear, organized delivery, including answers to potential audience questions. Use APA style formatting for citations and reference list with only minor errors. Address assessment purpose in a well-organized oral presentation, incorporating appropriate evidence and tone in grammatically sound sentences.
  • This week in History 4

Students will search the various internet resources, sites, and databases related to psychology and find one salient event that took place during this week in the history of psychology. (2/9-2/15) you will then make a post to the module discussion board, including reference formatted in APA style and working hyperlinks. Students will provide sufficient context to the importance of their historical selection by writing a short narrative designed to inform the class of the importance of the selection and how it has informed the study of psychology.

    • The length of the original post should be 75-100 words in length. Sources must be included and cited in APA 7th style formatting, including hyperlinked links.

Please note that, for this class, current events do not qualify as history and will not be accepted for credit on this assignment. For this assignment current events are defined as important events happening in the world. To meet the requirements for the class, historical events that occurred more than 10 years in the past are considered appropriate for the assignment.

When finished with the discussion post please run the assignment through a 3rd party AI-detection like Quilbot.

  • Psych Power Point

Recall from this weeks discussion that groupthink occurs when group members reason that they cannot be wrong and reject any argument contrary to their ownrejecting criticism from internal members and criticism from people in out-groups (Janis and Mann, 1977).

Furthermore, Janis and Mann identified the following 8 symptoms of groupthink:

    • An illusion of invulnerability
    • Collective efforts to rationalize
    • Unquestioned belief in the group’s inherent morality
    • Stereotyped views of rivals and enemies
    • Direct pressure on a member who expresses arguments against any of the group’s stereotypes, illusions, or commitments
    • Self-censorship of deviations from apparent group consensus
    • A shared illusion of unanimity
    • The emergence of self-appointed “mind guards” (p. 131)

    Assessment Preparation

Select 1 of the following real-world occurrences of groupthink or identify a factual event of your own to use for this assessment:

    • Bay of Pigs
    • Pearl Harbor bombing
    • Space Shuttle Challenger explosion
    • Salem witch trials
    • Switch to New Coke

    Assessment Deliverable

Create a 10- to 12-slide Microsoft PowerPoint presentation with detailed speaker notes about your chosen event. In your presentation:

    • Identify and describe your selected event. Include the date(s) involved, geographic location, and major players in the decision.
    • Explain how groupthink worked in your selected event. Relate your explanation to the symptoms of groupthink.
    • Discuss the impact of groupthink on the outcome of the event.
    • Discuss the role of authority influence in the event.
    • Explain 2 actions that may have countered the groupthink and authority influence that led to the outcome of the event.

Cite at least 3 sources to support your presentation.

Format your citations and references according to APA guidelines.

    Week 5 Assignment: Descriptive Assessment

    Overview

A descriptive or direct assessment is sometimes included in the FBA. Conducting the descriptive assessment requires you to observe the target behaviors and measure baseline data of the behaviors. A behavior is effective and relevant if it can mediate changes in the environment. Evaluating the stimulus changes co-occurring with the behavior can help us hypothesize the functional reinforcers that are influencing them.

    Instructions

For this assignment, your instructor will provide you with a case study and a template. From the information provided in the case study, you will complete the following activities within the provided template:

Describe the scientific rigor(s) exemplified by conducting the descriptive assessment.

Describe the benefits and limitations of conducting a descriptive assessment.

Provide an operational definition of the concerning behavior.

Quantify the target behavior observed in the five observation periods by using a line graph to display the data. Be sure to construct an APA compliant graph.

Describe the trend of the data path.

    Complete the contingency diagrams.

Complete the ABC-QA for attention, tangible, and demand.

Display the results of the ABC-QA by using a bar graph.

Provide an interpretation of the bar graph and conclude the hypothesized function(s) influencing the target behavior.

Summarize the compassionate and/or cultural variables one should consider when conducting a descriptive assessment. Be sure to use supporting evidence such as journal articles and/or the Capella Compassion Code.

Be sure to complete the self-assessment grading rubric included in the template.

Be sure to incorporate values of compassion and cultural humility when choosing measurement procedures and conducting the descriptive assessment. You can refer to the for more details.

In addition, complete the self-assessment grading rubric included in the template.

    Additional Requirements

Your assignment should meet the following requirements:

Written communication: Should be free of errors that detract from the overall message.

APA formatting: Paper, references, and citations are formatted according to current APA style guidelines. Use for guidance in citing sources and formatting your paper in proper APA style. See the for more APA resources specific to your degree level.

Resources: At least three scholarly or professional resources.
