  • Sexual shame and healing from sexual abuse with a Biblical w…

Respond to this discussion board. Must be at least 200 words. APA style. Must use both of the scholarly references in this post and Biblical world view. Sexual shame can be a way to separate us from experiencing Gods love. According to Slattery (2018), pornography and sexual shame can be tools that Satan uses to keep people from experiencing the full joy of Jesus. According to 2 Corinthians 10:3-5 (New American Standard Bible, 1995), the thing we fight against is not this world, but evil spiritual forces. Satan uses distraction, temptation, and trauma to keep us away from Gods plan. Slattery (2018) gives the example of a woman named Ginger who dealt with childhood abuse. It was not Gingers fault to be abused as a child. This is important to emphasize when counseling a client. Oftentimes, the client may feel like they are the ones who are at fault for the abuse that they experienced (Balswick & Balswick, 2019). They need to come to the understanding that it was the person who committed the act that caused this trauma, not the client. Sometimes, the abuse can lead to things such as sexual addiction. For example, Ginger acted out of her pain (Slattery, 2018, p. 100) and became addicted to sex and drugs. The thing that helped her was spending time in the Bible and journaling through her pain. This is a good example of how one can use the Bible to help bring healing. When working in session with a client, I would start by helping them to understand that they are not to blame for what happened to them. This is very important to help with the shame of sexual abuse. To help the client feel comfortable healing, I would need to establish rapport by showing that I am a safe person to trust. This can take time and may involve discussing less sensitive topics first. For homework, I would have the client spend time in the Bible and pray. During this time of praying, I would have the client keep a journal (as Ginger did). In the beginning, the time spent in the Bible may be shorter, such as 10 minutes a day. From there, I would increase the time spent until it is an hour or so (even if this is broken into 30-minute morning and evening increments). It is easy to believe that one is beyond the capability of being redeemed by God. However, the Bible story about the woman who wept on Jesus feet is a beautiful example of how anyone can be redeemed in Jesus (Slattery, 2018). Another thing that I may assign for homework is to have the person look at other parts of their life and see that they are not defined by what happened to them (Balswick & Balswick, 2019). If I can show the client that their identity is not the trauma or abuse, but that they are God’s creation, I can help them work toward rewriting their future. SATURDAY NIGHT BEFORE MIDNIGHT: After reading the above assigned reading and completing the IAT for at least two social groups, write your initial discussion post, in which you should address the following:

    1. (1) First, describe what you learned about yourself and any implicit biases you have through completing the IAT. You do not need to share which social groups you selected; rather, describe what you learned about yourself and implicit bias as a whole. (2) Next, propose possible behaviors you could measure that would indicate the presence of those biases in the natural environment. Consider, the section within your assigned reading on “Measurable Behaviors.” (3) Next, explain possible interventions or strategies you will attempt in response to your behaviors demonstrating possible implicit bias. • You are encouraged to make connections with the classmate in the post and affirm your classmate’s response or respectfully provide additional information on a different perspective. Please be sure to mention course-specific content in your response. Your response should add a layer of depth to the conversation, not serve primarily as behavior-specific feedback.
    • Make sure to include in-text citations with page numbers that direct the reader to the locations in the article that prompted your responses (see examples below).

    GENERAL DISCUSSION GUIDELINES

Discussion posts (initial posts and responses to classmates) should be written professionally. Make connections to the weeks assigned readings with in-text citations that include page numbers, even if you are not providing a direct quotethis will help the readers locate the sources that inspired your responses. (Note: In APA-style papers, you are only required to provide page numbers with quotations.) In-text citations should follow one of these formats:

    • As a parenthetical expression: …….(Cook et al., 2019, p. 23).
    • As part of the narrative: As Cook et al. (2019) noted, “…………” (p. 23).

For these forums, if you refer only to the directed articles for the discussion, you do not need to include a reference section.

Week 3 context for films screened and extra credit discussion

This week we are looking at How a films visual language is influenced by a filmmakers POV or Gaze with a

Focus on Black Filmmaker. Within Our Gates was made during the time of the Red Summer of 1919 which is when race riots broke out across America just after many black soldiers came home from WWI and realized they fought for freedom abroad and did not have it at home. This was the context within which the filmmaker was operating as well as the uptick in lynchings and terrorism after the release of Birth of a Nation. Micheaux was attempting to broaden the definition of blackness beyond what Griffith portrayed in Birth of a Nation. As a result, you see a wide variety of black representations some of which even look white like Dr. Vivian. Notice the difference between how black people are portrayed in Within Our Gates and the other films you watched so far as compared to Birth of A Nation.

    Read: Chps. 2-4 (MD)

Use “How to Read A Film” to discuss what you have watched this week and every week.

**You must post your comments in order to see what others have written. This is NOT a graded discussion but will count as class participation.

  • Single Story example (Assignment #2)

    Context that will help:

This entire class is rooted in this simple notion that African Americans, Women, and other underrepresented people in the media are often relegated to a “Single Story” narrative that leaves them misunderstood, dis-empowered, and not fully seen as three-dimensional people. This in turn robs all people of their humanity via their inability to see someone else as a full human being.

We see this arise in conversations about immigration, the Muslim ban, police violence, #metoo, DEI, Critical Race Theory and many others that involve race, gender, and class.

While this class may be mostly focused on African Americans, the call is to expand your humanity and see yourself when you see African Americans and delve deep into your understanding of our shared humanity. In some ways, we have all experienced similar things to varying degrees.

    Assignment:

1- Use what you also learned from the films these last two weeks and the “Single Story” TED talk to describe what “Single Story” or Stereotypical assumptions you may have had about African Americans/Africans prior to what you learned this week. If you are African American or African, what “Single Story” do/did you have about Africans or African Americans?
