  • Theories of personalities, discussion post

chess piece that stands out from rest Please consider the following prompt and craft a response that sufficiently captures all aspects of it from your unique point of view and original research. Please cite and reference any source(s) you use to help write this response in APA format. Notice that in addition to your Main Entry post, you will need to offer two substantive classmate response posts to complete this exercise. See below instructions that will guide your peer engagement thinking/posting. See syllabus or course calendar for due dates for both Main Entry posts and peer engagement. Main Entry: Self-Actualization Both humanists you read about in this unit consider self-actualization as the ultimate goal of personality development something we are all striving for in some way, shape, or form. Maslow felt we got there by getting all, more base-level, needs met, and Rogers believed we got there by experiencing an empathetic, unconditionally supportive environment. Indeed, self-actualization is a goal, both a journey and a destination, and if you look around, you can probably identify someone in your life who is close to attaining it if not all the way there. Who is that person in your life, the one who has either attained self-actualization or is very close to doing so? What is their relationship to you? Describe what it is like to observe them from the outside. How do you know theyve attained or are close to attaining self-actualization? How do they behave? How do they seem? What is life like for someone who is self-actualized (or close to it?) How do you feel when you are around them? What effect does this self-actualized person have on you? How would Carl Rogers describe how that person came to be self-actualized or so close to it? Give specific examples from that persons story that represent at least three identifiable elements of Rogers theory (consider bolding them to draw our attention to them). How would Abraham Maslow describe how that person came to be self-actualized or so close to it? Give specific examples from that persons story that represent at least three identifiable elements of Maslows theory (consider bolding to draw our attention). Peer Engagement Remember to circle back and substantively respond to two classmates by the due date specified in the syllabus and course calendar. Your peer engagement posts must go beyond summarizing and praising. To aid you in this endeavor, incorporate one or more of the following lines of thinking in your peer engagement posts, ensuring both a hearty, meaningful conversation and that your work meets criteria for substance and depth: Compare your observations of what life is like for a self-actualized (or close to self-actualized) person with that of your peers. What are the similarities between them? The differences? Compare how you feel around the person you discussed in your thread with how your peer described feeling around the person theyve identified. Can you synthesize a common experience for those who are exposed/around someone who has achieved/is achieving self-actualization? Rogers and Maslows theories have more than three components to them offer one or two more from each theory for your classmate to consider for their person and give some examples of what they might look like to help your peer think along those same lines.
  • It Runs in the Family

It Runs in the Family Have you ever been told that you act like one of your relatives? Maybe you have heard the phrase, Youre definitely your fathers child My mother says that my brother, sister, and I all get our outgoing personality from her. Ive also always been told by many relatives that I am just like my cousin Connie. The notion that children inherit characteristics from their parents is widely held in this society. Not only do people accept that parents pass physical characteristics, such as eye color or height, through their genes, but we often expect childrens personalities to resemble their parents. The notion that certain traits run in the family is also highly popularized and accepted. For this assignment, you are to write a short paper critically examining the role of genetics on psychological traits in your own family. Pick a personality characteristic, talent, or skill that you believe runs in the family. Describe the relatives (living or dead) who also possess this characteristic. In your paper, make sure to address the following questions: What is the likelihood that the trait you are describing is genetically influenced? Explain. What might be the relative contributions of genetics versus environment? How might genetics and environment interact to produce this trait? How many family members do not possess the characteristic? In my family, my mother, sister, and I are introverted, while my father is not. We prefer staying at home watching movies, avoiding large crowds, and we are uncomfortable with public speaking. In contrast, my father is comfortable speaking in public and enjoys starting conversations with others.

In Platos dialogues, Socrates is portrayed as a philosopher devoted to truth, wisdom, and the examination of human life. Through works such as the Apology and the Allegory of the Cave, Plato presents Socrates as courageous, intellectually humble, and committed to helping others recognize truth. Artistic representations of Socrates throughout history reflect these same characteristics. Paintings such as The Death of Socrates and other depictions of him as eternal, modest, humorous, and healing reveal the dominant qualities Plato emphasizes: courage, wisdom, humility, and moral responsibility.

One of the most famous representations of Socrates is Jacques-Louis Davids The Death of Socrates. In this painting, Socrates calmly prepares to drink the hemlock while his followers are overwhelmed with grief. His posture and raised hand suggest that he is still teaching, even at the moment of death. This image reflects Platos Apology, where Socrates argues that death should not be feared and that living unjustly is worse than dying. Rather than escaping prison, Socrates accepts his fate in order to remain loyal to his principles. The painting emphasizes his courage and commitment to truth. Other representations portray Socrates as an eternal figure whose influence extends far beyond ancient Athens. Statues of Socrates displayed among kings and heroes suggest that his wisdom is timeless. This idea connects to Platos Allegory of the Cave, in which Socrates describes the philosopher as one who has seen the truth and attempts to guide others toward it. Although Socrates was executed, his ideas continue to shape philosophy, education, and ethical thought, showing that true wisdom outlives the body.

Some images present Socrates as modest and even humorous. The portrayal of Socrates alongside the quote, The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing, highlights his intellectual humility. In the Apology, Socrates explains that he is wiser than others only because he recognizes his own ignorance. Another comic depiction shows Socrates being mocked, reminding viewers that philosophy often brings ridicule. Plato frequently shows Socrates using irony and humor to hallenge false beliefs, even when it makes him unpopular. Together, these representations reveal the dominant characteristics of Socrates found in Platos works. Socrates is courageous in the face of death, humble in his understanding, compassionate toward others, and persistent in his search for truth. These images support Platos view that philosophy is not merely knowledge, but a way of life devoted to questioning, moral integrity, and the pursuit of wisdom.
