  • Part 2

An original paper from a professional publication dealing in psychology or counseling that has not been submitted for credit in another class, this university or another university. Topic is your choice and does not have to be pre-approved. The article used does not need to be submitted with the paper. Papers submitted after the due date/time will incur an automatic 5-point deduction.

    Papers1 & 2 and Extra Credit

    Papers submission requirements.

I have included a Turnitin Assignment module for each paper due during the weeks of 14 January thru 3 February 2026. The papers are due on 27 January 2026 by 9 pm, but the module will remain on-line for late submissions one additional week. The subject of the paper is your choice, but it must be in the psychology/counseling area and come from a professional publication. These are professional journals such as the Journal of Counseling and Development, Journal of Psychology, etc. Newspaper articles from the Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, New York Times, etc., and/or textbooks are not acceptable.

When you are ready to turn-in your paper, use the appropriate module to attach your paper and I will take it from there. Your papers shall be in either APA or MLS format, your choice, and will be at least 750-words, double-spaced with 1 margins. Please include your name on the paper, and the last paragraph of your paper will be your opinion of the article and why, plus a bibliography must be a part of your paper to show where you obtained your information. You can begin to turn in your paper(s) when the Turnitin Assignments module opens, but no later than 9 p.m. on the 15th of October due date. Late submissions will be accepted for 1-week after the due date but will result in an automatic loss of 5 points from the final determination. Points will not be immediately visible in the grade book until the designated posting date/time.

An extra credit paper, if you need/choose to submit one, will be in the same format as the first two papers and is to be submitted via the Turnitin Assignments module from 11 February thru 1 March 2026. I will not accept an extra credit paper from any student who has not completed course requirements to that point, which include all tests administered, to that point must be completed, both previously noted papers 1 & 2 must have been turned in, participation in at least a majority of the behavioral project must have been submitted for grade. If these requirements are met, in my opinion, then the paper will be accepted. Please note that you will not see a score for the extra credit paper until I am ready to post final grades. When I do score this paper, you will be scored only those points necessary to bring your grade up to the highest possible, to a maximum of 50 points. This score will be added to your total score in the grade book. Use the grading scale in the syllabus to determine your grades.

Also, unless you absolutely need the extra credit paper to pass the course, do not waste your time, as I will only give the number of points necessary to get you the highest grade possible. If you are already working on an “A”, then your paper will not be worth any extra points.

To access these items, select Turnitin Assignments from the weekly course display area. Once the selection is displayed, follow the prompts and instructions to submit your paper to their appropriate place. Note that each paper will be added to a database once submitted and compared with other papers already in the database, published and posted to the internet, and professional publications. Turnitin Assignments will then create an originality report showing similarities and where from by percentage. Note that any paper turned in by you via Turnitin Assignments is in a database and will give indication as such. Basically, you cannot use a previously turned in paper to any course for credit in this class. The papers must be wholly original in their entirety.

  • Psychological disorders and mental health advocacy

Competency In this project, you will demonstrate your mastery of the following competency: PSY-215: Describe various diagnoses of psychological disorders Scenario At this point, Jamal feels enlightened (and empowered!) by how much he has learned about mental health during his time off between terms. He has learned about deinstitutionalization and its consequences for mental health and the public. Likewise, Jamal acknowledges how perspectives have changed regarding the duty of clinical professionals to provide treatment to those in need, as well as how social and cultural changes have influenced our conception of psychological disorders. In many cases, advancements in symptom classification and diagnostic assessment have caused us to question whether what we once viewed as disorders are actually disorders at all. Conversely, we now recognize new disorders that did not exist before. Given his newfound interest in mental health advocacy, Jamal wants to be able to speak to the many changes that have occurred within the mental health paradigm over time and how those changes continue to forge progressive new pathways in mental health reform. Jamal has recently created a blog to highlight the many ways in which we can change the conversation about atypical or culturally unexpected behavior. For this project, you will first create a blog post that compares the diagnostic features and underlying biopsychosocial factors of various psychological disorders. Your post will outline the history of mental health disorders, the impact of deinstitutionalization, and the shared symptoms across various diagnoses. In addition, your post will provide perspectives, considerations, and awareness in an advocacy message that helps to change the conversation about a specific disorder. Directions Part One After reviewing the scenario, use the Project One Template linked in the Supporting Materials section to complete your blog post. You will first review the various psychological disorders that youve learned about in the course and select three disorders from the list provided to focus on for this assignment. Next, in a minimum of 3 to 5 sentences per bullet for each psychological disorder, respond to each of the rubric criteria below to structure your blog post. Support your answers with credible sources when appropriate. In your own words, identify and describe the main diagnostic features of each of the three disorders selected. Consider biomedical factors: Describe what it means to characterize the three disorders as diseases of the nervous system and the body. Consider clinical factors: Describe the similarities between the selected. In what ways might these similarities impact both the diagnostic and treatment processes? Consider historical factors: Describe the ways the deinstitutionalization movement impacted patient rights, levels of care, and access to treatment for the three disorders you selected. Consider sociocultural factors: Describe the social and cultural changes that have caused shifts in the publics perception of the three disorders over time. Part Two For Part Two, choose one disorder from the three you discussed in Part One. Respond to each of the following prompts in a minimum of 3 to 5 sentences. Support your answers with credible sources when appropriate and address the rubric criteria. Consider the mind-body connection: Describe whether a discernible bidirectional relationship exists between the disorder and physical illness. Consider the impact of language and messaging: Describe how the words used (e.g., in casual conversation, in media communications) when discussing a disorder influence societal willingness or ability to manage the disorder. Consider the effect of lifestyle choices: Describe the small, but significant, changes in attitude/behavior a person can make that could help them manage the symptoms of the disorder.
