Module 6: Reinforcement and Work Enjoyment

Supervisors have a huge impact on the well-being of the supervisees and trainees that they oversee. Even though they may not control all of the contingencies that impact staff, supervisors can enhance their practices in a wide variety of ways that can increase work enjoyment and job satisfaction. These strategies include providing effective positive feedback and reinforcers, but even more importantly, we will discuss how to reduce aversive control and aversive job conditions that may be negatively impacting staff, increasing burnout, or supporting increased turnover in ABA organizations. Additionally, professional development planning is discussed as a strategy for improving job satisfaction, as well as supervisors coaching their supervisees and trainees in self-care behaviors.

      Tasks to Prepare Before Class:

      • Read Reid, Parsons, & Green’s Supervisor’s Guidebook: Chapter 6 – Supporting proficient work performance: Positive feedback
      • Read Reid, Parsons, & Green’s Supervisor’s Guidebook: Chapter 7 – Supporting proficient work performance: Special recognition procedures
      • Read Reid, Parsons, & Green’s Supervisor’s Guidebook: Chapter 9 – Promoting Staff Work Enjoyment

Upon Completion of Module 6, students should be able to:

        • Identify the role of supervisor support on job satisfaction, turnover, and burnout
        • Determine assessment strategies for factors related to work enjoyment, including burnout, supervisor support, and job crafting behaviors
        • Identify characteristics of high-quality positive feedback
        • Select the positive impacts of integrating personalized reinforcement systems into supervision practices
        • Determine the impact of aversive control and extinction in work settings, and strategies for decreasing aversiveness of job tasks
        • Identify BACB recommended actions for professional development of supervisors, as well as supervisees/trainees
        • Determine strategies that supervisors can use to coach self-care repertoires of supervisees/trainees

context: What is a common label for employee behavior that you’ve heard used in organizational contexts? How would you pinpoint the behavior (or output of that behavior when appropriate) to make this label into something that is measurable, and how might you collect data on it?

Remember to review the Reflection Paper rubric and instructions in the Important Course Information module. APA7 STYLE

Additionally, please include LINKS or DOIs to any articles or books referenced outside of the assigned readings as part of your APA citation (). Failing to do so will result in point deductions.

THIS IS WHAT WE LEARNED THIS WEEK:This module will introduce folks to some of the most critical aspects of PM practice: pinpointing and measurement. Different types of organizational pinpoints will be explored, including those for behaviors, outputs, and business results. The instructor will present examples of different types of measurement used in practice, and will share strategies that can help leaders better quantify even the most abstract performance metrics, all using established PM tools. Performance monitoring and staff observation will be discussed, along with techniques for reducing staff reactivity/resistance and increasing acceptability of measurement as part of an organization’s culture. Finally, special considerations for graphing individual and group data will be shared.

Upon successful completion of this module, learners should be able to:

    • Differentiate between behaviors, generalities, attitudes, states, and values in the workplace
    • Select the appropriate order of steps in the pinpointing process
    • Differentiate between behaviors, outputs, and business results
    • Determine how detailed a pinpoint must be in context of desired behavior change
    • Determine which measurement strategies are fundamental, derived, sampled, or other
    • Given a scenario, select the most appropriate measurement system
    • Identify the role of inter-observer agreement in the measurement development process
    • Determine best practices for graphing group performance data in PM
    • Identify special considerations for graphing individual data in PMReflection Paper

1.A stereotype refers to preconceived, inaccurate, rigid beliefs about an individual or groups of people (Barwick-Snell, 2024). This means that stereotyping others can be harmful for the idea that this could make assumptions that do not accurately represent reputations regarding a person or people. Now although there may be some elements of truth in some stereotypes, some of these truths may not truly be representative of each individual within that stereotype. Like for instance, I have witnessed some Polynesian islanders in Hawaii have a specific view of Micronesians. This specific view was mostly negative because some teachers who were Polynesian did not have good experiences with Micronesians. As a result, I have witnessed some native Hawaiians referring to Micronesians as unkempt, lazy, or nasty in a lot of ways because of these past experiences. Now not every Micronesian I have met is like this, but there are some who truthfully live up to that stereotype. This then causes some younger children to be discriminated against or treated more harshly because of these past experiences, even if they personally had nothing to do with it.

That said, there are many other cases that show that stereotypes can cause more negative effects even if it is perceived as initially positive. After all, one study that was done on stereotypes has shown that positive stereotypes have negative effects on people or group perception (Mattavelli et al., 2024). As well as that, another study was done to show how stereotypes affect undergraduate Asian-American women’s math test results. By the end of the study, it was found that these same Asian-American women who were tested had a diminished ability to concentrate due to the expectations that come with their ethnicity (Cheryan & Bodenhausen, 2000). This is due to the fact that some stereotypes involving Asians’ show that they have enhanced math performance in comparison to other ethnicities. However, despite the positive implications of the stereotype, this study has shown that these stereotypes have impaired math performance and concentration because of the high standards that come with this perception.

    2. A stereotype is a widely held but oversimplified belief or assumption about the characteristics, behaviors, or attributes of a particular group of people. These beliefs assume that all members of a group are the same, which ignores individual differences (2023). Stereotypes can be harmful because they often lead to prejudice and discrimination, influencing how people think about and treat others. When stereotypes guide behavior, they can contribute to unequal opportunities, social exclusion, and negative self-perceptions among members of stereotyped groups (Myers & Twenge, 2022).

One stereotype I have witnessed is the belief that people who seek therapy are weak or unable to cope with their own problems. This stereotype can discourage individuals from seeking help for mental health concerns due to fear of judgment or stigma. Research shows that mental health stigma can prevent people from accessing treatment, even when they would benefit from professional support (Corrigan, Druss, & Perlick, 2014). In reality, seeking therapy often requires courage and a willingness to reflect, grow, and improve ones well-being.

Sometimes stereotypes may develop because people notice patterns or rely on limited observations about certain groups. However, even if a stereotype seems to contain a small element of truth in some situations, it is still problematic because it overgeneralizes those traits to everyone in the group. Social psychologists explain that stereotypes simplify complex social information, but this simplification often leads to inaccurate judgments and reinforces bias (Myers & Twenge, 2022). Individuals within any group vary widely in their experiences, personalities, and behaviors, so stereotypes fail to capture the true diversity of people.

  • Group Project Reflection

prepare a 1-page individual reflection addressing:

    • What worked well in the activity
    • What you would modify in a real clinical setting
    • How the activity aligns with your emerging clinical style

    Background:

For this activity the group used My Heart: A Book of Feelings by Jo Witek to help children explore

and regulate their emotions in a supportive way. This book shows a range of emotions in an age-

appropriate way, which makes it perfect for helping children identify and discuss their feelings.

We will focus on four emotions from the book: mad, sad, afraid, and silly. After reading about

each, one of us will take the role of the clinician and ask questions to encourage reflection, like

What does mad feel like in your body?, What makes you feel sad?, or Can you tell a story

about a time you were silly?. I acted as the “angry” stating when I get angry, I feel my body warming up and my skin turns red and sometimes I kick things, promoting self-awareness. It is a trauma-

informed activity because the clinician will validate all feelings, the children can choose how

much they share, see that all feelings are okay, and learn healthy ways to cope with big feelings.

This activity is also meant to be interactive, short, and engaging, while providing the clinician

with a tool for helping children process and regulate their emotions in a safe environment
