    • Describe the goals of science (description, prediction, and control) that are the foundation for a scientific approach in ABA.
    • Describe the philosophical assumptions or “attitudes” of science and explain why these are important as a foundation for applied behavior analysis.
    • Recall your reading of the article (Ackerman et al., 2020), and discuss whether and how the research supports the goals of science, the philosophical assumptions of science, and the seven dimensions of applied behavior analysis. During this week, we are examining why most people tend to conform in most of their social interactions, while others deviate from the existing social norms. After you have read the textbook and lectures assigned for this week, please respond to the following question:

    • In your everyday life, you conform to hundreds of norms, rules, and laws, often without your conscious awareness that you are doing so. Identify some norms, rules, and laws that you believe impact your life. What are some of the biological, social, and environmental factors that reinforce these norms, rules, and laws?
    • What are some behaviors that were previously considered deviant that may have been normalized through social change?
    • Be sure to add in-text citation and reference DUE 3/12/2026 11pm eastern time
  • PSY3200 Wk 5 D due 3/12/2026 11pm eastern time

The discussion assignment provides a forum to discuss the relevant topics for this week based on the course competencies covered. For this assignment, there are two parts. Make sure to answer all questions.
To support your work, make sure to utilize your course and text readings. When asked, also utilize outside sources. As in all assignments, make sure to cite your sources in your work and provide references for those citations utilizing APA format. Antidepressants are prescribed by medical doctors to treat the symptoms of depression, as well as other conditions such as high anxiety, posttraumatic stress syndrome, and obsessive compulsive disorder. The variety of drugs that fall under the category of antidepressants alter how long specific neurotransmitters are available in the synaptic cleft. For example, monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) block enzymatic breakdown, and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors block the reuptake of neurotransmitters. Many different neurotransmitters are involved in balancing mood and emotions; finding the right medication for a patient can involve trial and error.

    Answer the following questions:

    • How do antidepressants, such as MAOIs and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors work? Why might an MAOI work for one person and a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor work for another?
    • There have been reports of antidepressants being associated with an increase in suicides in some demographic groups. Does research seem to support this claim? If this is true, discuss why antidepressants might be related to an increase in suicides for some individuals.
    • Is it ever recommended that people stop taking antidepressants once prescribed? How might it benefit some to engage in therapy while taking antidepressants? Explain how cognition and neurochemistry are related. How might a change in activities and environment lead to a change in the neurochemistry of the brain?

It is always essential knowing when a stage in life ends.

If you insist on remaining in it, beyond the necessary time, you lose the joy and the meaning of what remains.

Closing circles or closing doors or closing chapters. Whatever name you want to give it, the importance lies in being able to close them, to let go of moments of life that are coming to an end.

    Did your job end?

    Is the relationship over?

Do you no longer live in that house?

    Must you take a trip?

    Did the friendship end?

It is possible to spend considerable time in the now, wallowing in the whys, rewinding the cassette and trying to understand why this or that happened.

The wearing away will last forever because in life you, me, your friend, your children, your siblings, all of us will come to close chapters, to turn the page, to bring to an end stages or moments of life and to march forward.

We cannot be in the now longing for the past. Not even asking ourselves, why? What happened is done with, and we must let go; we must free ourselves.

We cannot be children forever, or belated adolescents, or employees of nonexistent firms, nor have bonds with someone who does not want to be with us.

No. Deeds happen and we must let them go. This is why sometimes it is important to destroy keepsakes, to give away presents, change residence, tear up papers, throw away documents, sell or give away books.

External changes could symbolize inner processes of becoming.

To let go, to release, to take off. In life no one plays with a marked deck and you must learn to lose and to win.

One must let go. It is necessary to turn the page. We must live out only what we have, in the now. The past is passed.

Dont wait to be repaid. Dont wait to be acknowledged. Dont wait for others to somehow realize who you are. Let go of resentment. Avoid turning on your personal television set in order to go over and over the matter. The only thing you get in return is self-damage and you become poisoned or embittered.

Life goes forward, never backwards. Because if you live your life leaving open doors, just in case, you will never let go or live today with satisfaction.

Courtships or friendships that do not come to a close, possibilities of returning (to what?); need for explanations, words that were never spoken, silences that encroached upon youIf you can face them already and now, do it! If not, let it go, close chapters. Tell yourself no, that you will not return.

But not for pride, nor arrogance but because you no longer fit there, in that place, in that heart, in that room, in that house, in that desk, in that occupation. You are no longer the same person that left, a few days ago, three months ago, a year ago. For that matter, there is nothing to return to.

Close the door, turn the page, close the circle. You will not even be the same person. Not even what you are returning to, will be the same because in life nothing stands still; nothing is static.

It is mentally healthy, even good for your own self-esteem, to shed what is no longer in your life. Remember that nothing or anyone is indispensable. Not anyone, no place, not a job, nothing is vital to live because when you reached this world, you arrived without that adhesive. For that matter, it is simply a habit to live so stuck to it and it is a personal challenge to learn to live without it, without the human or physical adhesive that today pains you to release.

It is a process to learn to shed and it is humanly possible to do so, because, let me say again, nothing or anyone is indispensible to us. It is only a habit, an attachment, a need. Butclose, adjourn, clean, toss out, catch a breath of fresh air, cast off, shake off, release. There are so many terms to mean mental health and whichever one you choose; it will help you once and for all to go forward in peace.

    That is LIFE!
