  • Cross Cultural Interactions in Group Counseling

    Assignment Overview

    Initial Post Prompt:

The text and counseling scholars suggest that all interactions in counseling are intercultural and cross cultural. There is no stronger place to recognize this than in group counseling. Just like we bring our cultures, mores and traditions into the counseling space, so do clients; even more so when we are facilitating a group. Even if we are not specifically discussing something related to cultural identity, these topics can still find a way to emerge during group interactions.

For your discussion board this week, please watch the video and answer the guided questions from Chapter 6 on page 128 in your textbook. In addition, please respond to the following:

    • Are there any ethical or legal obligations that you want to consider as you move forward with this group?
    • How would you ensure that everyone in this group gets to share their experience and yet keep the group emotionally safeguarded?

    Instructions:

    • Support your statements with evidence from the required studies and your research. Your initial response should be at least 300 words.

Professor stated “Here are my line-by-line and rubric reviews of CH1. The chapter presents a relevant research topic addressing the transition-age services gap for individuals with ASD. The study’s conceptual vision is clear, and the research questions align with the proposed quantitative design.

However, the chapter requires revision to correct the problem statement template, add a proper summary paragraph, and substantially reduce passive voice and mechanical writing issues” Edit areas and revise – click on right side of paper comments to address changes. • Please answer the 3 questions down below based off the case

    1. What new insight or perspective about the case did you gain during your discussion that you would like to apply to your future work? (one paragraph minimum) 2. What specific content from the reading(s) did you find of most value to your conceptualization/discussion? (one paragraph minimum) 3. What additional questions regarding the theory/theories and/or the theoretical applications do you still have? If you have no additional questions, please indicate N/A. Case is down below

    KEY CONSTRUCTS:

Correspondence: The alignment between worker needs and work environment reinforcers

Tenure: Remaining on and being retained in a job

Reinforcers: Examples of work reinforcers might include pay, prestige, and working

    conditions

Work Adjustment Styles: Reflect how we relate to our work environment

Flexibility: Level of tolerability for lack of correspondence

Activeness: Person tries to change the environment

Reactiveness: Person tries to change themselves

    Perseverance: Length of tolerability

    CASE OF FATIMA VIGNETTE:

Fatima is a 36-year-old African American, Muslim woman working as a senior instructional

designer at TechEd Solutions for six years. She holds a Master’s in Educational Technology and is

married to Hassan with two children (ages 6 and 8). She also identifies as part of the disability

community due to her systemic lupus diagnosis.

Job Satisfaction: Fatima genuinely enjoys her work, describing it as “meaningful” and

“purpose-driven.” She feels confident in her abilities, stating “I am really good at what I do.” She

has led high-profile accessibility projects and mentors junior colleagues. Her work aligns with her

values around education and making learning accessible for diverse populations.

Work Environment Challenges: Despite the company’s diversity statements, Fatima experiences

significant workplace stress. As the only hijab-wearing woman in the office, she often feels isolated.

Her current supervisor, Derek, visibly “bristles” when she requests time off for Islamic holidays or

asks for Halal meal options at company events. Team-building activities center around happy

hours, effectively excluding her from networking opportunities.

Flexibility and Health Concerns: Fatima feels anxious requesting schedule flexibility for family

needs or her lupus flare-ups. During chronic illness episodes, she would prefer working from home,

but Derek rarely includes remote workers in meetings or project updates, causing her to miss

critical information. She has not formally requested disability accommodations.

Recent Changes: Fatima’s workplace satisfaction was higher under her previous supervisor,

Maria, who was “warm, smart, and encouraging.” Derek, her new supervisor for eight months, is

“young, cold, and impatient.” He frequently interrupts her in meetings and recently suggested she

might benefit from “attitude coaching” despite her continued high performance.

Current Stressors: Hassan, Fatimas partner, was laid off three months ago, making her the sole

breadwinner. She feels “stuck” because she depends on her job for income and health insurance

crucial for her lupus treatment. She avoids discussing work stress with Hassan, who is “very

sensitive about not financially contributing.” Her anxiety has escalated to panic attacks, particularly

on Sunday evenings and Monday mornings.

Presenting Concerns: Fatima seeks counseling support to manage workplace anxiety, clarify her

professional options, and determine how to advocate for her needs while protecting her family’s

financial security. She wants to “bring more of my authentic self to my work” and develop

confidence in addressing the systemic issues she faces.

  • Parenting style: authoritarian vs permissive

    UNIT 2: RECOMMENDED TOPICS

    • Parenting Style: Authoritarian vs. Permissive

Authoritarian parenting is known as Tiger parenting in some cultures: punitive, unyielding, demanding and sometimes even demeaning. Familial roles are tied to cultural perspectives with tiger parents demanding strict adherence to rules and expectations of their children. This style often yields high levels of success in academic, extracurricular, and future professional performances. Permissive parenting is considered Panda parenting in some cultures: soft, cooperative, supportive, and unstructured. Panda parents provide encouragement of childrens interests and offer freedom of choice without judgement, often yielding highly creative, intrinsically motivated children. Each approach has benefits and detriments which are largely influenced by cultural context. Explore each of these perspectives within cultural context and share evidence supporting the pros and cons of each.

Title Page, Abstract, and Annotated Bibliography

This assignment is the building block for the in-class panel discussion and future evidence-based writing assignments. The following components are included:

    1. Title Page: APA formatted with page number and byline (page 1)
    2. Abstract: begin with a specific thesis statement of topic/position, support it with facts derived from valid empirical sources. The abstract is written in a third-person, objective voice. The abstract does not specifically refer to authors, articles, or statistics and studies; nor should it include any citations. It is brief – no more than 250 words. Write the abstract after annotations are written (page 2)
    3. Annotated reference list (bibliography): No fewer than 5 scholarly references from the Bankier Library databases. These sources must be original research articles in which a study has been conducted and evidence (support for the researchers hypothesis) gathered. (pages 3 -6). Focus on studies that support your topic. Studies that present evidence of opposing views of the topic are encouraged, however if students choose a perspective, they must provide MORE evidence to support their stance.
    • For each entry, include author’s name(s), year of publication, all publication information, and hyperlink to the full text article. After the reference, provide several paraphrased sentences summarizing the study. Use your own words to explain the following information and focus on the big questions:
    • Where was this study done – country/culture – is there relevance to that?
    • What were the authors’ hypotheses/research questions? What background might be helpful in understanding why the researchers are studying this phenomena?
    • Who were the participants and how many were there? What characteristics are relevant?
    • How were participants’ studied – how was data collected? What did participants have to do?
    • What kind of data or information was collected and analyzed?
    • What were the outcomes? Did outcomes support or refute the researchers’ hypotheses?
    • What do the findings mean? How do they support the stance?
    • How might the research be meaningful or helpful to people?

All written work is produced in APA format. APA documents are double-spaced with one-inch page margins and a 10 to 12-point, standard font style. Follow all other APA guidelines for formatting and references.

  • What Motivates Me: A Cultural Perspective

Motivation is defined as a conditionusually an internal onethat initiates, activates, or maintains a persons behavior (Shiraev & Levy, 2021). In other words, it is a reason for doing something or working toward a goal. What motivates you? Pause to consider that question as it is key to this Assignment. For example, are you driven by the need for security, duty, recognition, self-actualization, or something else? Your answer probably depends on the context in life (e.g., school, work, health, family) in question. Various motivational theories can be applied in all of these contexts. Now consider the influence culture has on shaping motivations within you. Most likely from your life experiences, you are already aware that what motivates you may not be the same as what motivates someone else, especially someone from a different cultural background. Emphasis placed on individual achievement differs among cultures, as does tendency toward collective responsibility, consumerism, spontaneity, and other factors related to motivation. As you develop your understanding of motivation and view of achievement within cross-cultural psychology, you will also continue to work on your scholarly writing skills. Your opinions in this Assignment should be supported by evidence from the Learning Resources. Each time you mention an idea from a resource, you should provide a citation (e.g., Author, Date) and include the full APA reference in your reference list. Holt, M. (2016).
