    Reflections on a Podcast

!!!!!Provide clickable links that take me directly to your sources to the EXACT information (i.e., the journal article that matches your reference list or to the reputable webpage(s) where you gathered your information)

I would like you to integrate your answers into an essay format. You may (and should) include personal opinion and reflection in your discussion.

    Task:

You should address all aspects of the SIX questions using complete thoughts with proper syntax. Your paper should follow the writing style and citation formatting for APA. Include a properly formatted APA reference list, but you do not need to have a title page or abstract. See instructions (above) and resources (below) for additional tips. Please double space your papers and use in-text APA citations when summarizing and discussing ideas from other sources. There are no page length restrictions, but papers tend to be 3 pages long.

    Description & Instructions:

I have come across a number of podcasts that I feel make interesting supplements to our discussion of child development. This project will allow you to explore some additional topics from this course in more depth. Choosee a podcast from the List of Podcasts link in the Writing Assignment #1 portal and answer the below questions about the podcast.

I would like you to integrate your answers into an essay format. You may (and should) include personal opinion and reflection in your discussion. You should address all aspects of the SIX questions using complete thoughts with proper syntax. Please double-space your papers and use in-text APA citations when summarizing and discussing ideas from the podcast and other sources. This assignment is worth 50 points (see below and the rubric for point breakdown).

I will use TurnItIn for this assignment, but I realize that similarity reports will likely be a bit high due to the integration of questions into your discussions. However, I expect summaries and answers to questions to be in your own words.

Hints: If you are struggling with structuring your ideas, try rephrasing the questions into topic sentences to guide your discussion.

Integrate the below questions into your essays and include the following criteria:

    1. Briefly summarize the content of the podcast. (2-4 paragraphs; 12 points)

    a. Note: I strongly suggest you DO NOT use AI to generate summaries. AI gets many aspects of podcasts wrong. I care about what you gathered as valuable from the episode, but I will also be attending to accuracy of information when I grade your summaries.

    b. Also, you should be citing the podcast in your papers, as per APA guidelines for summarizing someone elses work. You do not have to cite after every sentence, but generally at the beginning of each paragraph and when integrating ideas to better show what are your own thoughts and what is summary information from the podcast.

    2. Why did you choose this topic? What interested you about the topic? (1-3 sentences; 2 points)

    3. What is one new/interesting/surprising idea you learned from this podcast? Why do you feel it is new/interesting/surprising? (~1 paragraph; 4 points)

    4. What is something you think about differently after having listened to this podcast and why? (~1 paragraph; 4 points)

    5. What is one question you still have after listening to this podcast? Why do you think the podcast did not address your question? (~1 paragraph; 4 points)

    a. Note: It is okay if your questions are not directly related to the podcast. What is important here is that you are thinking thoughtfully and critically about the podcast and research related to this topic. Your question should be something that involves a bit of research or exploration of a theme. Because I am looking for a 2-4 paragraph summary and the summary is worth ~25% of the grade for this assignment, I am looking for a more complex question than What is the definition of X?

    6. Find the answer to your question using a reputable source:

    a. What clues do you have that it is a reputable source (list more than one reason if it is peer-reviewed think beyond the peer-review aspect to the journal quality, the credentials of the authors, or the number of times the article has been cited, etc.). (1-3 sentences, 3 point)

    b. Briefly summarize your findings from the source and be sure to reflect on how the source has answered your question from the podcast. (2-4 paragraphs. 12 points)

    i. Note: Because you are summarizing information from another source, you should be citing the source during your summary of its content.

    Additional criteria:

    I. Include an APA formatted reference list with ALL of your sources at a minimum, you need TWO sources, including the original podcast and the source where you found your answer. (4 points)

    a. Please review the Generative AI Guidelines for this course. Because of the prevalence of AI, you must adhere to the AI guidelines for the course while completing this assignment.

    b. For ALL citations/sources, you must include a clickable link to the source content that will take me directly to the content you used to complete the assignment. The link cannot take me to a top-level page (like clevelandclinic.org or springer.net) but must direct me to the page or pages where you gathered your information.

    i. I realize it may not be proper APA citation formatting to provide a link in all cases; however, it is now necessary given the amount of hallucinated sources and information I have received in the past few years.

ii. Yes, please also link to the podcast as part of the reference list. I realize I provided this reference for you, but it is just good habit and keeps everything parallel.

    c. Note: If you do not provide clickable links that take me directly to your sources to the EXACT information (i.e., the journal article that matches your reference list or to the reputable webpage(s) where you gathered your information) then you will receive a ZERO on this assignment.

    i. Your paper should be written in essay format (i.e., try to have information flow together as one single paper with no subheadings), which also has appropriate syntax, spelling, vocabulary, and APA formatting / citing using in-text citations. (5 points)

A basic understanding of sociological theory is fundamental to any sociology course. As this is a graduate level class it is my expectation that we all have a basic understanding of the three sociological theories. If you do not have a basic understanding of the three sociological theories I would encourage you to grab any introductory level sociology textbook and read the first couple of chapters. This is a perfect opportunity to utilize the PDF copy of the introductory text posted on the course site. In addition, you should consider reading closely the files I have posted in the Resources module. Written for an undergraduate audience, you will still find them to be of value as you review sociological theory in preparation for subsequent coursework.

1.1. In your own words, summarize each of the three main sociological theories. Be sure to cover the main ideas and concepts of each. (two paragraphs for each theory, for a total of six)

2.2. How might an interactionist approach the topic of crime and delinquency? How might a conflict theorist approach the topic of crime and delinquency? How might a functionalist approach the topic of crime and delinquency? Be specific, providing examples. (one paragraph for each theory, for a total of three). YOUR SUBMISSION SHOULD BE A MINIMUM OF NINE WELL-DEVELOPED PARAGRAPHS. REMEMBER, A WELL-DEVELOPED PARAGRAPH HAS AT LEAST FIVE SENTENCES.

    Essay Topics

    1. Choose the philosopher from whom you have learned the most this semester. Choose three

main ideas from this philosopher; then, explain how you understand these ideas and how

these ideas have impacted you in the past or will probably impact you in the future. For this

essay, you may choose any of the philosophers (major or minor) from required and optional

course readings this term . In this assignment, you will write your philosophical essay. In this essay, you will apply rational argument, your own personal experiences, and what you have learned throughout the course to one of the

of your choice. Be sure to consider any feedback you have received on earlier philosophical forums or major essays. When writing your essay, adhere to the following guidelines:

    • Use a standard college format.
    • Include a cover page with a title and image that reflect your thesis.
    • Begin with a concise introduction stating your chosen question, your main response to it, and a preview of how you are going to develop your response. Keep background about the philosophers or their periods to a minimum in this paragraph; focus on the central logic of your essay. Background and context are best integrated into the body of the essay.
    • Be sure that the purpose of each paragraph is clear.
    • Be sure that the relation between paragraphs is clear.
    • Summarize the main idea of your essay in your final paragraph. You may also include a final thought, but avoid adding anything completely new. Try to keep this paragraph concise at no more than 24 sentences.
    • Use either MLA or APA style guidelines to format your paper.
    • You are welcome and encouraged to use visual material in this essay; it may be integrated into the body of the essay or added as a supplement at the end.

Here are three additional suggestions for an excellent final essay:

    • Quote any philosophers you are discussing relatively often in your paper.
    • When relevant, refer to your own life in concrete, specific terms; use specific places, dates, and events. If you have concerns about privacy, consult your professor for assistance.
    • Strive for a spirited, engaged tone that communicates your own feelings and experiences.
  • Module 8: 3/2-3/8/2026 ‘Mommy Dead and Dearest’ Discussion

This week, please watch ‘Mommy Dead and Dearest’. This is a documentary, which I believe most will find quite intriguing, to say the least. The documentary was released in 2017 and is the true-crime story of Dee Dee Blanchard and her daughter Gypsy Rose; exploring the controversial psychological condition Factitious disorder imposed on another (FDIA), also known as fabricated or induced illness by carers (FII) and the first named as Munchausen syndrome by proxy (MSbP) is a mental health disorder in which a caregiver creates the appearance of health problems in another person, typically their child, and sometimes (rarely) when an adult simulates an illness in another adult partner. This might include altering test samples or injuring a child. The caregiver or partner then presents the person as being sick or injured Permanent injury or death of the victim can occur as a result of the disorder. The behavior might be motivated by the caregiver or partner seeking sympathy or attention.

    1. In your opinion, why did Gypsy’s doctors accept Dee Dees homemade medical records? How was Gypsy able to have her own personal Facebook? And to get an account on a Christian dating site? Her mom was incredibly overprotective, so its interesting that Gypsy was able to sneak this by her.

2.How did absolutely no one see any signs that Gypsy was being mistreated? Is Gypsys father to blame-at least in part-to the development of MBP?

3.Why did Gypsy feel that her mother dying was the only way out? Was Gypsy justified in her act? Why or why not?

    4. Why did Dee Dee film so many home videos? Considering that she was so secretive, this seems counterintuitive. How did Gypsy become so eloquent, since her mother only allowed her to obtain a second grade-level education?

    5. Should her doctors face repercussions for treating Gypsy, and not discovering she was not actually ill? What systemic changes been made in law and health care to ensure this cannot happen again?

6.Considering that Dee Dees family knew of her fraudulent activities and knew that she was very dangerous, why didnt anybody try to get custody of Gypsy? Or, at the very least, check in on Gypsys well-being?

    7. Why did Dee Dee put Gypsy in ballet class when she knew that Gypsy was supposed to appear paralyzed? Was this another cry for attention and sympathy?

    8. Does Nicks disorder (ASD) Or reported, but never founded disorder (DID), have any place in the case? Should it have been used more in his defense? Why or why not? He is currently serving a life-sentence after pleading guilty to Dee Dees murder.

    9. What are your thoughts on their intimate relationship? They first meet and have intercourse in a movie theater restroom, which proceeds to role play. How do two sheltered people develop such a relationship with one another?

    10. Does Gypsys submissive role mimic her role with her mother? Could this explain her behavior?
