Assignment Guide: Finding and Submitting Empirical Research Articles

    Assignment Overview

Conducting research takes dedication, time, and persistence. One of the most important steps in developing a strong neuroscience research project is learning how to find and evaluate empirical (original research) articles. This assignment is designed to help you begin that process early so you can stay on track with your research project.

To help you build a strong scientific foundation for your project, you are required to locate and submit two empirical research articles that you plan to use in your research project.

    Assignment Instructions

    1. Locate two empirical (original research) articles related to your neuroscience research topic.
    2. Articles must:
      • Be published between 20202026
      • Be empirical studies (articles that include methods, results, and data collected by researchers)
      • Be relevant to your proposed research topic
    3. Download the full PDF version of each article.
    4. Upload both PDF files to this assignment submission.

This assignment is meant to help you make early progress on your project these are often the easiest points earned when completed on time.

    What Is an Empirical Article?

An empirical article reports original research conducted by the authors. These articles typically include the following sections:

    • Abstract
    • Introduction
    • Methods
    • Results
    • Discussion
    • References

Review articles, opinion papers, editorials, or summaries are not considered empirical articles for this assignment.

How to Search for Empirical Articles (Using PubMed)

One of the most commonly used databases in neuroscience and biomedical research is PubMed.

    Steps for Searching:

    1. Go to or our campus EbscoHost or Google Scholar
    2. Enter keywords related to your topic (example: “dopamine addiction fMRI” or “sleep memory consolidation hippocampus”).
    3. Use filters on the left side of the page:
      • Publication dates: 20202026
      • Article type: Clinical Trial, Randomized Controlled Trial, or other research articles
    4. Select articles that clearly describe an experiment or study.
    5. Look for links to the full text PDF through the publisher or your institutions library.

    Tips for Success

    • Start early finding strong articles takes time.
    • Try multiple keyword combinations.
    • Read abstracts first to determine relevance.
    • Save articles as you find them to avoid searching again later.

    Important Reminder

Conducting research takes dedication and time. The earlier you begin gathering and reading empirical articles, the easier your research project will become.

    Grading

    • Full Credit: Two appropriate empirical articles (PDF format) submitted.
    • Partial Credit: Only one article submitted or articles do not meet requirements.
    • No Credit: Articles not submitted or not empirical research.

This assignment is intended to help you build momentum in your research process and set you up for success in your final project.

These are not to be summaries of the material. Reflection papers are graded as follows:

    Brief summary of material 25
    Reflection & critical thinking 50
    Connection to lived experience 20
Correct use of grammar and mechanics 13

TOTAL 108 Late reflection papers will not be accepted.

Race, Culture & Ethnicity in Psychology

    Reading Reflection Paper

Due Sunday 3/01 uploaded to Canvas by 8pm

4-5 pages double spaced (1250-1500 words) demonstrating your understanding of the idea that race is socially constructed and that you can apply it thoughtfully to both history and the present.

This reflection should draw on the readings and class material from the first three weeks of the course (history, conquest, race as a social construct, and the fallacies of racism). Organize your paper around the following four tasks:

    1. First, explain, in your own words, what it means to say race is socially constructed. Use specific ideas and examples from our readings/discussions.
    2. Next, choose one historical moment, policy, or institution weve discussed (colonization/conquest, slavery/labor systems, racial classification, immigration law, segregation, etc.). Describe it briefly, then analyze how it helped create, enforce, or normalize racial categories.
    3. Third, pick one specific present-day example (news, media, campus, work, social media, family/community) that illustrates one of the five fallacies of racism. Name the fallacy and explain how your example reflects it. Be concrete and specific.
    4. Finally, reflect on your own identity as a cultural being. Discuss a few relevant memories, events, or people that have shaped your awareness (or lack of awareness) of your own ethnic identity. You are not required to share anything deeply personal, however I do want you to locate yourself in relation to the material. (my cultural background is a 21 year old girl born and raised in the Philippines, i love the philippines and have lived there all my life)

There is no one correct way to complete this assignment. Im looking for conceptual accuracy, specific examples, and thoughtful reflection.

Some questions to consider (You do not need to answer all of these questions, just some suggestions to get you thinking):

    • What story about race in the U.S. were you taught, and what was left out?
    • What did you think you already knew about race before this class? Whats new or shifting?
    • Where do you see race being made (laws/policy, institutions, media, everyday interactions)?
    • Which fallacy of racism stands out most, and where have you seen it show up?
    • Whats an early memory of learning something about your own ethnicity/culture?
    • Whats an early memory of learning about other groups (school, media, family, community)?
    • Growing up, was race/ethnicity talked about directly, indirectly, or avoided? What did that teach you?
    • How, if at all, do you express or explore your heritage today (family stories, food, language, traditions, community)?
    • Where do identity labels fit you, and where do they feel incomplete?
    • Who are you becoming, and what matters most to you right now?
