Clinical or Counseling Summary
You will build an annotated bibliography based on THREE peer-reviewed journal articles. The three peer-reviewed journal articles are expected to be about a research topic area that you are interested in pursuing in the field of Psychology science. You can find the research topic from the readings in your classes or the research work in your lab, or you can find the research topic by reading the faculty CVs and selecting their published journal articles in the Department of Psychology. There are many components for this assignment, so be sure to pay close attention to the instructions, spelling, and format. You will read a series of peer-reviewed research journal articles (not chapters or literature reviews) from the research area. The bibliography will be based on three articles (different ones from the first bibliography). Taken from Dr. Trisha Weeks’s description, “all of the articles must be primary source research articles”. This means that summaries of research articles, even if they are published in scientific magazines, will not do. You need original peer-reviewed journal articles.” To find the peer-reviewed journal articles, search on the Marriott Library’s research database, usually PsycInfo (see Marriott Library for tips on using their resources, plus some tips on doing APA style). If you are basing it on a faculty member’s research here at the U., you can look at their website or CV, as well, to find articles. You can use Google Scholar to search the peer-reviewed journal articles, however, may not be able to get PDFs or access to those items . You will download/access the articles to read. You will write and summarize items in your own words, not copying or using “quotes” from the articles. You do not have to attach the articles. NOTE: If the article has more than one experiment/study, do the components for the first experiment/study only. Component 1. List your main research topic area. Describe the topic area and give your main research question(s). Component 2. List the first article as an APA reference (e.g., White, P. H., Kjelgaard, M. M., & Harkins, S. G. (1995). Testing the contribution of self-evaluation to goal-setting. Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 69, 69-79.). Remember to use the Purdue Online Writing Lab ( ) as a guide. This is what will be used for grading. Note: Do not use the citation machine on OWL itself if there is one listed. Read the material and follow the instructions for your citations and references. Everything for proper APA references will be required, except for indentations. I would not assume that if you copy & paste something from a faculty members website, the library, etc., that it will be in APA style automatically. Component 3. Summarize what you see as the main thesis or research question being explored in the article (what are the authors trying to show or test overall?). NOTE: If the article has more than one experiment/study, do the next 3 components for the first experiment/study only. Component 4. Summarize the methods used in the article: Major characteristics of the participants (i.e., how many, ages/ethnicity (indicate if not listed), how recruited), the independent & dependent variables (how were they operationalized), & other things of note from the methods. Component 5. Summarize the results of the article. What did they find, including whether their hypotheses were supported by the results? Component 6. Summarize the conclusions of the article. What implications do they have for the research question? Were they able to answer it, how or how not? Do you agree or not with the authors’ conclusions or “take-home” point? Component 7. List the second article as an APA reference (See example listed in Component 2). Component 8. Summarize what you see as the main thesis or research question being explored in the article (what are the authors trying to show or test overall?). Component 9. Summarize the methods used in the article: Major characteristics of the participants (i.e., how many, ages/ethnicity (indicate if not listed), how recruited), the independent & dependent variables (how were they operationalized), & other things of note from the methods. Component 10. Summarize the results of the article. What did they find, including whether their hypotheses were supported by the results? Component 11. Summarize the conclusions of the article. What implications do they have for the research question? Were they able to answer it, how or how not? Do you agree or not with the authors’ conclusions or “take-home” point? Component 12. List the third article as an APA reference (See example listed in Component 2).. Component 13. Summarize what you see as the main thesis or research question being explored in the article (what are the authors trying to show or test overall?). Component 14. Summarize the methods used in the article: Major characteristics of the participants (i.e., how many, ages/ethnicity (indicate if not listed), how recruited), the independent & dependent variables (how were they operationalized), & other things of note from the methods. Component 15. Summarize the results of the article. What did they find, including whether their hypotheses were supported by the results. Component 16. Summarize the conclusions of the article. What implications do they have for the research question? Were they able to answer it, how or how not? Do you agree or not with the authors’ conclusions or “take-home” point? Component 17. Looking over the articles & summaries, do you see a pattern in the research questions? If so, what is it? If not, why do you think there is not one? Component 18. Looking over the articles & summaries, do you see a pattern in the results? If so, what is it & why? If not, are there differences in methodologies that may be the reason (e.g., different testing tools, populations being investigated)? Component 19. Looking over the articles & summaries, what do you see as the most interesting take-home points from the research? Component 20. Looking over the articles & summaries, what questions are left to be answered in this topic area? NOTE: Do not forget to number the components (.5 off if not done). If turned in late, there will be a 20% penalty of the points per day (including weekends) for the assignment. Do not use quotes for this assignment. It is to be in your words or paraphrased. If your plagiarism review score is 20% or more, there may be 3 points or more taken off the score as a penalty (plus other issues). RUBRIC: List your main research topic area. Describe the topic area and give your main research question(s). Listed the first article in APA reference format. Summarized the main thesis or research question explored in the article (what are the authors trying to show or test overall?). Mentalism and Radical Behaviorism
Overview
As a future ABA professional, understanding why the field of behavior analysis differs from other psychology fields is important. Behavior analysts use objective and behavioristic statements to describe phenomena they observe. At this point in your studies, it is important to start considering the impact of mentalistic statements in your vocabulary to help you to begin thinking like a behavior analyst.
Instructions
Your instructor will share the Mentalism and Radical Behaviorism Template you will use to complete this assignment.
Complete the following in the provided table:
- Column 1: Identify whether the statement is mentalistic or behavioristic for each scenario.
- Column 2: Explain the reasoning behind your choices. Some of the scenarios are similar and you may reuse your justification in multiple scenariosbut you must restate the explanation for each scenario and provide in-text citations to back up where those facts came from.
- Column 3: Provide a behavioristic explanation as an alternative for each of the mentalistic explanations you identify. You do not need to include an explanation if you label the example as behavioristic.
Answer the following questions below the table. Each answer should be no more than two paragraphs and should expand on the last answer with new ideas. Ensure there are in-text citations to back up where your facts come from.
- How does a behavior analytic approach differ from other fields of psychology?
- What is the problem with a behavior analyst using a mentalistic approach?
- Why is it important for a behavior analyst to use a behavioristic approach and not use a mentalistic approach in their practice?
Refer to the Mentalism and Radical Behaviorism rubric to ensure you understand the grading criteria for this assignment.
Additional Requirements
Your assignment should also meet the following requirements:
- Written communication: Should be free of errors that detract from the overall message.
- Resources: Reference your Cooper et al., (2020) course textbook and other course readings that support your responses.
- Length: 23 double-spaced pages, in addition to the title page and references page.
Competencies Measured
By successfully completing this assignment, you will demonstrate your proficiency in the following course competencies and rubric criteria:
- Competency 3: Distinguish between different branches in the field of behavior analysis.
- Identify correctly four or five of the statements as either mentalistic or behavioristic.
- Explain the reasons for the behaviors chosen.
- Describe alternative behavioristic explanations for the mentalistic statements.
- Explain how the behavior analytic approach is different from most other psychology fields.
- Explain the problem with a behavior analyst using a mentalistic approach.
- Explain why it is important for a behavior analyst to use a behavior analytic approach.

You will receive a selection of questions. Your task is to write a reflection essay on one of these questions. The assignment is a reflection paper not a demonstration of your ability to repeat the thoughts of the course instructor. You are asked to provide your own thoughts.
You must refer to lecture videos or updates. Your paper should be in conversation with the lecture material. I am not particular about citation styles. According to lecture… is an adequate way of citing lecture. You should feel encouraged to write in the first person.
Question Prompt Choices (Choose One Question)
1. Comedy films, of recent years, often rely on the mockery of other human beings (often the unrepresented or disenfranchised). What do you think the social psychological meaning of modern film humor suggests about how we co-exist with other people? If humor provokes a private response that is natural, (that we laugh without it necessarily being willed), what is it within our personal psychology that our modern comedies are stimulating, confronting, or encouraging? Are comedy films changing, or are they still mostly on the same path? What does your response say about the state of our social psychology?
2. In the last decade with the massive success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we have been provided with figures who are largely super human (inhuman in relation to people like you and me) and are mostly defenders of our North American system. We have also, in the last few years, been presented with heroes who were older and consistently identified as male. In many cases these heroes challenged corruptions within systems but left the systems in the place. What do these representations of heroes, and its difference from the hero that questioned society and power, tell you about the ways we are encouraged to think of fighting evil or power? Are the battles that are fought on the screen battles that matter to you. Is the understanding of heroic changing, and if so, or not, what does this say about our shifting social psychology, and does this touch how you think on a personal level?
3. Fantasy films were once cinematic representations of a desire for personal and social psychological hope in something more and better than what is generally provided in adult life. This hope, in fantasy films, tends to be supported and/or offered by magical or spiritual forces. What do you think the popularity of fantasy films says to us, as a social psychology, about the absence of spirituality or mystery in our modern understanding of the psychological self? What do you think the cost would be to popular cultures relationship to our social psychology if fantasy films, of the sort described above, faded from our screens? Is this already occurring? Given that many fans of fantasy films do not actually believe in the power of magic, is our escape to this genre a sign of promise in something other than ourselves or is it an escape into a temporary delusion where we imagine we live somewhere else, for a little while?
4. Traditionally, dystopian films have presented future worlds where natural disasters or the growing divide between those who are powerful and those who are not have led to paranoia and the need to protect yourself and your dependents to survive. Recently we have been given films where individuals are dependent on artificial intelligence technologies that are superior not only in terms of intelligence but also in basic ideas of moral goodness. What do dystopian films seek to tell us about our current reality? Why, given their often negative and condemning comments about humanity, are they popular? From feeling paranoid, to the desire for self-protection (which breeds further paranoia), to new appreciations of non-human guidance (Artificial Intelligence, what can we theorize about the social psychology of dystopian films in terms of personal warnings or social criticism?
5. In my lectures on horror films (video) I suggested horror films are largely about disorders that threaten our fragile faith in order. In the past few years, we have films focused on trauma caused by fractured social structures, including the family, mental illness, and media identity (the development and presentations of media influences as representations of oneself). We have been fearfully wondering about who we really are and whether we are the good people we want to think ourselves to be. More recently, we have had a number of horror films about threats to tight knit communities and to our children. What do you identify as a main trend in recent horror films (the past few years) and what do you think it shows about our shared fears or concerns? Are our fears about real threats or are we hiding from those?
6) All these film genres, discussed in this class (with the possible exception of fantasy films), have become more violent and graphic than they have been in the past. Many comedy films have characters badly hurt and bleeding, hero films demand violent solutions to problems, and dystopian and horror films have become more violent than they have ever been. Are we starting to change our views on the value of violence. Is it funny? Is it becoming necessary? Why is body horror such a component of many popular films? What sort of social psychological theory can you initiate based on your observations about our appreciation for more violence in our entertainment?
