  • Discussion 3-1 Co-Sleeping and SIDS

Child-rearing presents as a set of culturally bound practices that can complement or conflict with research and health promotional practices. The practice of co-sleeping and the risk reduction practices for sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) have become conflictual in recent years. In preparation for this discussion, review the website and article provided in the Module Three Reading and Resources for information on each side of this argument. You may locate resources on this topic on your own. In your initial post for this discussion, formulate a research-supported position on co-sleeping regarding risks versus benefits. Should co-sleeping be discouraged? Are there specific developmental advantages supported by research for co-sleeping? What are the cultural considerations for co-sleeping practices? Are the risks for co-sleeping (either social, emotional, or health-related) significantly supported by research to take a position against co-sleeping? Consider what you would advise as a professional in the promotion of optimal development.
  • Psychology Question

2 pages per reflection paper with case study. For Reflection paper Answer the questions based on the readings Nichols, M. P., & Davis, S. D. (2020). The essentials of family therapy, 7th ed. Hoboken, NJ: Pearson:

What aspects of Structural Family Therapy had an impact on your thinking clinically, personally, and/or theoretically? What dimensions do you agree or disagree with as a future counselor? What could you foresee incorporating into your own life as well and into your counseling career? What is still left unanswered that would encourage you to pursue further clarification?

For Case study use MRI Systemic Approach Interventions and answer the questions 1-2 Paragraph:

    • Develop one specific intervention or directive aligned with your model.
    • Be concrete (what exactly would the therapist say or assign?).
    • What is the intended systemic impact?

    Case Vignette: The Ramirez Family

The Ramirez family presents for therapy due to concerns about 15-year-old Sofia, who has recently refused to attend school. Over the past three months, Sofia has complained of stomachaches in the mornings and becomes tearful or irritable when pressured to go to school. She has missed 18 days this semester.

    Family Members

    1. Elena (Mother, 44): Describes herself as very close to Sofia. She checks in with her frequently throughout the day via text and often allows Sofia to stay home when she appears distressed. Elena reports experiencing anxiety when she was younger and says she doesnt want Sofia to suffer like I did.
    2. Carlos (Father, 47): Works long hours. He reports frustration with the situation and believes Sofia is avoiding responsibility. He thinks Elena is too soft and that Sofia needs firmer discipline. Arguments between Carlos and Elena about parenting have increased.
    3. Mateo (Son, 12): Quiet during sessions. When asked about the school refusal, he shrugs and says, Its always about Sofia anyway. His grades have recently dropped.
    4. Sofia (daughter, 15): Reports feeling overwhelmed at school but struggles to identify a clear reason. Denies bullying. Becomes tearful when discussing school. Often withdraws when her parents argue about her attendance.

    Presenting Concerns

Sofia reports feeling overwhelmed at school but cannot clearly explain why. She denies bullying. When Sofia stays home, Elena rearranges her work schedule to be with her. Carlos often withdraws from the conflict, spending more time in the garage or at work. Parental disagreements escalate the night before school days. Family dinners have become tense; discussions often center on Sofias attendance. The extended family (grandmother) tells Elena she must protect Sofia from stress.

    Observed Interaction in Session

When Sofia becomes tearful while describing school, Elena moves closer and puts her arm around her. Carlos leans back, crosses his arms, and looks away. If Carlos challenges Sofia (Youre fine. Just go.), Elena quickly intervenes (Shes trying!). Sofia then becomes quieter and looks down.

When the therapist asks Mateo how this affects him, Elena answers for him.

  • Discussion

In the face of complex health decisions, most people draw on their social network to provide advice, confirmation, and support (Pescosolido, 1992; Strain, 1990). These social ties constitute the lay referral system, a term that Eliot Freidson (1960) coined to describe family members, friends, and neighbors who assist individuals in interpreting bodily changes and deciding on a course of action. Discuss the following question in 200 words.

    • What are the beliefs about illnesses that lead some people to use the lay referral system instead of formal treatment?

Textbook: Taylor, Shelley and Stanton, Annette. (2021). Health Psychology. McGraw Hill. Eleventh Edition.
