Systemic Literature Review Characteristics and Steps

It is important to understand the characteristics of a systematic literature review (SLR) as well as how to follow specific steps to completion. For this discussion, you will describe, in your own words, the characteristics of an SLR as well as explain the steps it takes to complete one. There are two parts to this discussion. For the first part of this discussion, you will create a numbered list and describe, in your own words, six to eight main characteristics of an SLR. For the second part of your discussion, you will need to create an infographic or graphic organizer that clearly illustrates the eight steps of an SLR, as outlined by Xiao and Watson (2019) and Okoli (2015). Your infographic or graphic organizer should clearly illustrate the eight steps of an SLR and how those steps are related to each other. Either place the graphic organizer into the discussion below your numbered list, include the link to the visual, or attach it as a file.

Discussion Topic: Chapter 3: What’s your brain like?Chapter 3: What’s your brain like?

This discussion is designed to encourage curiosity, reflection, and thoughtful engagement with course concepts related to the brain, behavior, and human experience. There are no right or wrong answers for this discussion. Instead, the goal is to explore ideas, consider different perspectives, and engage respectfully with your classmates’ thoughts.

Some people believe that “all you are” is determined by the types and amounts of neurotransmitters that move across synaptic gaps and the electrical activity in the brain.

Consider the following questions as you develop your response:

    1. Do you think that your thoughts, hopes, dreams, and aspirations are entirely the result of physiological processes? Are emotions such as love, hate, anger, and memories only occurring at the synaptic level? Why or why not?
    2. How is the ability to form new ways of thinking (i.e., creating new neural networks) useful to us as human beings?
    3. What are some functions or abilities that this capacity allows humans to perform?

You may draw from course materials, personal observations, or other thoughtful reflections. The emphasis is on curiosity, depth of thinking, and respectful dialogue.

    Requirements

    • Post one original response addressing the discussion questions.
    • Respond to at least two classmates with thoughtful, meaningful engagement.
    • Responses should extend the conversation by asking questions, offering new perspectives, or making connections to course ideas.

    Grading (10 Points Total)

    • Initial Discussion Post (6 points):
      • Demonstrates thoughtful reflection and engagement with the questions
      • Provides clear reasoning or examples
      • Contributes meaningfully to the discussion
    • Peer Responses (2 points each, 4 points total):
      • Responds to at least two classmates
      • Responses are respectful, constructive, and add depth to the conversation
      • Moves beyond simple agreement or summary

    Important Note

This discussion values curiosity and open-minded exploration. The purpose is not to arrive at a correct answer, but to engage in thoughtful inquiry and learn from one anothers perspectives.

  • Panic Attacks

For this week’s discussion assignment, respond to the following: Describe and contrast the nature of panic attacks when present in a diagnosis of Panic Disorder versus a diagnosis of Social Phobia. Discuss one pharmacological and one psychological treatment for symptoms of panic attacks.

Remember that all posts are graded for substance and thoughtful consideration of the discussion topic. Your post must also end with a “Question to the Class” – something related to the topic that you found thought-provoking and about which you’d like to know more and have further dialog. Before submission, please review the Discussion Guidelines and grading Rubric to ensure you have fully met the assignment’s expectations.

  • substance abuse and addiction

Substance abuse and addiction are difficult conditions to treat successfully. For example, the 12-month relapse rate among alcoholics is more than 60% and nearly 75% for smokers and heroin users. One possible reason for treatment failure is how addictive substances affect the brain. Most addictive drugs appear to tap into the brain’s reward circuit so that any behavior (taking a drug) preceding the psychological experience of reward is strongly reinforced. If addiction is a product of brain activity, it is logical that the treatment also must involve some change in brain activity. There are several forms of biologically-based drug treatments, including agonist drugs that mimic some of the addictive drugs’ effects (e.g. methadone for heroin addiction) and other substances that alter activity in the reward system (such as Baclofen).

Watch this TEDMED Talk by Neuroscientist Nora Volkow, Director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse at the NIH, on .

    Then answer the questions below.

    • Describe the neurobiology of substance abuse and addiction.
    • Provide an analysis of the extent to which addiction to psychoactive drugs is biological versus psychological.
    • Support or refute the practice of using drug therapies for treating addiction. Be sure you are including current supportive research in your reply.
    • Include in your argument above a discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of relying on drug therapy to treat addiction.

Use the APUS Online Library, Google Scholar, or any free academic or research database to research information on a drug for treating a neurological or psychiatric disorder. If you cannot find material on the drug you select in the Library, you may use other credible online sources. Any additional sources used must be websites with scientifically grounded information.

**Remember, formal citation of information in the discussions is optional. However, you are encouraged to use APA formatting as it is good practice. At a minimum, you must at least acknowledge sources you used to support your answer. Avoid using pharmaceutical sites as your only source of information; while they may look scientific, they are maintained by companies selling medications. Also avoid sources like WebMD, Wikipedia, Cleveland Clinic, Mayo Clinic, Verywell Mind, Psychology Today, Simply Psychology, Parent’s Day, news articles, op-eds, blogs, and encyclopedias as they are not scholarly sources. When in doubt, ask your professor if it is an acceptable source. In scholarly sources, the research and information are either reviewed by an editorial team (such as for the Harvard Business Review) or a group of scholar peers (such as in peer-reviewed journals ). The sources you use must be within five years or newer.

  • Assignment 8: Develop the Prospectus

Based on your previous work in this course, reflections, and feedback from your Chair, use the template provided in the Course Resources to develop a research prospectus that will serve as the core of your future dissertation research.

    Instructions

For your final assignment, you will apply everything you have learned in this course and develop a research prospectus. It must include the following:

    • Create a new Introduction to provide background and context for the study (2-4 pages)
    • Problem Statement (approximately 350 words; 10-15 required sources)
    • Purpose (approximately 1 page)
    • 2-3 Research Questions. Include null and alternative hypotheses for quantitative RQs
    • Theoretical Framework (1-2 pages)
    • Significance of the study (approx 1 page)
    • Research method and research design justification to include discussion of how your proposed sampling/recruitment, data collection strategy, and analysis process will maintain rigor (1-2 pages)
    • Reflect on ethical and feasibility issues associated with the proposed study (approx 1 page)
    • Summary (approx 1 page)

    Expectations

Length: This assignment must be 8-13 pages (excluding the title and reference page). All claims and justifications throughout should be supported by recent or seminal scholarly sources.

References: Include a minimum of 15 scholarly resources.

  • Assignment 7: Determine Theoretical Contribution and Signifi…

Part 1: Based on your work and feedback received from your Lesson 5 assignment, please identify one theory (or potentially a combination of theories) which will serve as the foundation of your study.

    • Identify the guiding framework. Present the key concepts, briefly explain how they are related, and present the propositions relevant to this study.
    • Explain how the framework guided the research decisions, including the development of the problem statement, purpose statement, and research questions.
    • If more than one framework is guiding the study, integrate them, rather than describing them independently. Do not select a separate framework for each variable/construct under examination.

Part 2: Write a significance of the study section based on your most recent Problem Statement revision, addressing each instruction in approximately 1 page:

    • Describe why the study is important and how it can contribute to the field of study.
    • Explain how the results advance the guiding theoretical framework and contribute to the literature.
    • Describe the benefits of addressing the study problem, achieving the study purpose, and answering the research questions. Whereas the problem statement should articulate the negative consequences of not conducting the study, this section should highlight the positive consequences of completing the study.

    Expectations

Length: Part 1 of this assignment must be 2-3 pages (excluding the title and reference page); Part 2 must be 1-2 pages.

    References: Include 5 scholarly resources.

  • Assignment 6: Revise Problem, Purpose, Research Questions an…

Part 1: Revise Problem/Purpose/RQs based on feedback and reflections.

Part 2: Reflection on appropriateness/justification for method and design (cite scholarly sources). Discuss how your proposed data collection plan supports reliability and validity (quantitative studies) or trustworthiness (qualitative studies).

    • Provide a brief discussion of the methodology and design to include a description of the data collection procedure and analysis. Do not include specific details regarding why the methodology and design were selected over others. More detailed information will be included in Chapter 3.
    • Cite the seminal works related to the selected methodology and design.
    • Indicate why the selected research methodology and design are the best choices for the study by explaining how they align with the problem and purpose statements as well as the research questions. Do not simply list and describe various research methodologies and designs.
    • Devote approximately one to two pages to this section.

    Expectations

Length: Part 1 of this assignment must be 2-3 pages (excluding the title and reference page); Part 2 must be 2-3 page reflection.

    References: Include 13 scholarly resources.

  • Diversity Awareness Graphic Organizer

Culture influences the way we think, feel, and behave. Understanding our own cultural identity and how it has influenced us helps us to better understand differences in others. To do this, we can look at our primary and secondary cultural diversity characteristics. Primary characteristics are usually the most visible to others, while secondary characteristics are usually defined by life experiences. Secondary characteristics may contribute to our implicit biases. In this assessment, you examine the characteristics that contribute to your cultural identity and reflect on how they have impacted your life experiences.

Reflect on the primary and secondary characteristics that make up your own cultural identity. Possible diversity characteristics include, but are not limited to, the following:

    Primary:
    Race
    Age
    Gender
    Sexual orientation
    Ethnic heritage
    Mental and physical abilities
    Secondary:
    Religion
    Education
    Family
    Language
    Work experience
    Economic class/income
    Geographic location
    Political beliefs

Select 8 diversity characteristics (primary or secondary) that have influenced your cultural identity.

Create a 1- to 2-page graphic organizer (e.g., circle map, chart, diagram) that lists and differentiates the 8 characteristics you selected that have influenced your cultural identity. Address the following in your graphic organizer:

Describe any good or bad rules, norms, beliefs, or values that you have learned as a result of each characteristic.
Describe multicultural challenges or opportunities you have faced or encountered in an educational, employment, or business environment.
Explain how cultural globalization and your life experiences have influenced those challenges and opportunities.
