  • Structural Reforms to combat Implicit Bias

Graduate-level writing requires a detailed examination of different phenomena and situating them within the context of course concepts. Assignments differ from journals and discussion posts by formulating a broader and more comprehensive argument that offers a new scholarly or methodological perspective. Assignments must be approximately 3-4 pages in length with double-spaced, 12 pt. font, and 1-inch margins. The assignment must be formatted in the APA 7th edition format with a minimum of 5-10 sources that are cited both in-text and on the works cited page.

Prompt: Chapter 12 details five categories for structural reforms to combat implicit biases and promote fairness across different social institutions. Based on your understanding of each of the reforms, please answer both of the following questions.

    1. Select one structural reform that is the most significant and relevant to your career field. Then, justify your selection. Why is that structural reform the most important? Why will addressing it be most beneficial for employees in that line of work? Make sure to support your assertions with the requisite number of scholarly sources.
    2. Identify and explain one concrete policy change all companies in that field of work can implement that upholds all tenets of the structural reform you selected. Make sure to be as specific and detailed as possible in your description of the policy. Make sure to support your assertions with the requisite number of scholarly sources to create a detailed framework for the policy.

  • Historic Public Advocate and Accomplishments

Throughout history, public health advocates have played pivotal roles in shaping the health and well-being of societies, often driving significant changes in public health policy and practice. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, advocates like Florence Nightingale and Lemuel Shattuck helped lay the foundations for modern public health by highlighting the importance of sanitation, hygiene, and data collection in preventing disease. During the 20th century, figures such as Dr. Edward Jenner, who pioneered the smallpox vaccine, and social reformers like John Snow, who investigated the cholera outbreak in London, advanced scientific understanding and promoted interventions that saved countless lives. Public health advocates have also been at the forefront of campaigns to reduce tobacco use, improve maternal and child health, and address the social determinants of health. In times of crisis, such as during the HIV/AIDS epidemic or the COVID-19 pandemic, public health advocates have been essential in disseminating accurate information, challenging misinformation, and ensuring equitable access to care. Through these efforts, public health advocates have played a fundamental role in improving the health outcomes of populations, often advocating for marginalized communities whose needs might otherwise have been overlooked.
