    Article Critique Written Assignment

    Overview

    • You will be asked to complete three written article critiques for this course. Each article critique will push you to evaluate the application of a primary theory in practice. You will identify a published paper in a peer-reviewed journal that examines the application of a primary theory and evaluate its use of theory using the instructions below
    • A list of papers will be posted for your first critique on the HBM. You will be responsible for finding papers for future critiques.
    • You MUST upload a copy of the paper you use for Critiques’ 2 and 3 in addition to your written critiques.
    • For this first article critique, you will complete this individually. (The second and third article critiques will be completed in predetermined groups of 3 or as determined by the instructor. More information on group assignments will be shared via course announcements.)

    Instructions

    1. You will choose one of two articles posted in D2L for your HBM article critique.
    2. As instructed for TRA/TPB, TTM, and SCT, identify an article with the assigned theory in the title and/or abstract.
    3. Acceptable articles are those that include data collected and analyzed that are related to the constructs of the theory or model, or articles that include a presentation of how theoretical constructs were used to plan a specific intervention. NOTE: reviews, commentaries, theoretical papers, and grey literature publications are UNACCEPTABLE articles to critique in this course.
    4. UPLOAD this article in addition to your paper.
    5. Write a four-page double-spaced paper.
    6. Concisely present the following using subheadings to separate sections:
    7. Purpose of the article objective, study questions, or hypothesis
    8. Methods used to conduct the study. Also be sure to identify and describe the conceptual definitions of the variables or constructs and describe the operational definitions of the variables or constructs
    9. Major findings
    10. Implications and interpretations
    11. Evaluate the effectiveness of the theory application
    12. Purpose/Objectives:
    13. Please state the purpose, objectives, and hypothesis, in your own words. Sometimes it is necessary to paraphrase or list the objective slash hypothesis. If this is necessary, please make sure it is correctly cited (including the page number).
    14. Methods:
    15. Describe the study sample: include number of participants, as well as the demographics mean age, % race/ ethnicity, mean education level, or other important information about the population.
    16. Study design: what design was used? (cross sectional, retrospective, etc.)
    17. Explain recruitment: where were the participants recruited? How were they recruited?
    18. How were the data collected? Describe the instruments used (interviews, surveys, diaries etc.) How many items were used, how long was the instrument, was reliability checked, etc.?
    19. What are the independent and dependent variables?
    20. Briefly explain the data analysis: what data techniques were used (means, regression, ANOVA, etc.)? What statistical programs were used (SPSS, SAS, STATA, etc.)?
    21. Construct Definition and Operationalization:
    22. What constructs are used in the study?
    23. How do the authors define each constraint?
    24. How is each construct operationalized? How is are they defined?
    25. How do the authors measure the construct? What items do they use in the instrument to measure the construct?
    26. How are the items scored?
    27. Putting all this information into a table is an acceptable way to present this information. A table can be easier to understand, as well as easier to use when discussing major findings or evaluating the theory application.
    28. Major Findings:
    29. Present, in your own words, what are the major findings as they relate to the constructs and outcomes.
    30. Discuss what the authors found out about the constructs and their relation to the outcome or study purpose.
    31. Interpretations/ Implications:
    32. Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the study.
    33. What do the findings tell us about future research that needs to be done?
    34. What do the findings tell us about the types of interventions that should be designed?
    35. Evaluate Theory Application:
    36. This is space to provide your opinion about the study, and how the authors use the theory. If there are other issues you would like to address, please feel free to include them as well.
    37. Some things to consider: how does your textbook discussion on the constructs compare to how the authors use the construct? Did the authors use all of the constructs? Do you think they them appropriately, or could they have done a better job with defining and operationalizing them? Were some of the constructs not used? If not did the authors say why they chose not to use them? Do you agree with their choice?
    38. General Comments:
    39. USE APA FORMATTING FOR ALL IN-TEXT CITATIONS AND FOR YOUR REFERENCES CITED PAGE.
    40. Provide the complete article reference at the top of your submission for easy reference. You must also provide appropriate in-text citations for the article, and the full citation for the reference must also be included in your references cited.
    41. Please note turning in a critique where most of the text is pulled out of the article will lead to a failing grade, even if you properly reference the material.
    42. Be clear and concise as possible; always try to state things in your own words.
    43. You can reference your textbook as needed, or additional peer-reviewed articles of any kind to justify components of your critique. These must be referenced appropriately.

FINALLY, THIS IS MEANT AS A REFERENCE AND SERVES AS A GUIDE. IT IS NOT A FINAL CHECKLIST OF THINGS TO INCLUDE IN YOUR ARTICLE CRITIQUE.

Identifying Mixed Methods and Triangulation in Public Health Evaluation and Research

As you’ll know after watching the flipped lecture for this week, mixed methods are commonly used in public health evaluations to provide both measureable outcomes (quant eval) and deeper contextual understanding (qual eval). This short assignment will give you an opportunity to explore how mixed methods have been applied in research / evaluation studies related to your own topic or outcome of interest.

Objective: Identify and analyze how mixed methods are used in a public health or evaluation study, paying attention to outcomes and triangulation.

Instructions: Submit a Google doc link with the following information.

Part 1: Find, link and cite one peer-reviewed research or evaluation article that uses a mixed methods design.

My program and outcomes: Name of the Program is Mindful Migration. Mindful Migration aims to reduce anxiety among African immigrant women in the United States. One of the outcomes are increased awareness regarding mental health struggles.

The topic should relate to your program or outcome (e.g., substance use, mental health, maternal mortality)

    • The article must clearly invlude both quantitative and qualitative methods.

Part 2: In 4-8 sentences (1-2 short paragraphs) answer the following:

    • Summarize the purpose of the study (you can likely pull this information from the abstract)
    • Identify the quant method used and the qual method used
    • Describe the findings (quant and qual)
    • Provide an opinion on whether you feel the mixed methods approach meaningfully strengthened the study’s conclusions or if the study / evaluation would have been better off only using a singular method

  • Access to mental health services

    A. Directions Step 1: Select an issue that is important to you, your community, or to Americans in general. If you reside in the United States, your community could be your geographical community (e.g., your neighborhood, town, or city) or the broader state or national community. If you do not reside in the United States, your community could be a group with shared characteristics with whom you identify. You can choose any issue, but your assignment must focus on how the federal government and federal officials are addressing the issue within the United States as a matter of U.S. public policy. Here are some ideas to get you started: immigration; border security; public school policy; public safety; gun rights or gun control; victim rights; student testing; school choice; abortion; access to public transportation or city services; energy, environment, conservation, or economic issues; healthcare (cost of medicines or health insurance, health care access); homelessness; the death penalty. Step 2: Find and read at least five articles from newspapers, magazines, or other online sources that highlight the government’s response to the issue. It is important that your articles do not only describe the issue or present opinions on the issue from general members of the public. Look for sources that communicate how federal government officials or agencies in the United States have responded or are responding to the issue. You will be asked to identify government officials by name in your articles. hint Ideas for sources include news articles; speeches from political candidates or current office holders; campaign ads; press releases; and data collected from non-profit organizations, among others. The website www.usa.gov can be a good starting point for learning about government responses to various issues. Other online sources for information about government policy and services could include (but are not limited to): www.realclearpolitics.com www.reuters.com State or local government websites Political party websites (e.g., democrats.org; www.gop.com) www.pewresearch.org Step 3: After completing your research and reflecting on what youve learned, fill out the Government in My Community template. The suggested total word range is 1500-2500 words. You will respond to the following prompts: What is the issue or problem that is impacting your community? Describe the issue or problem and its effects. (Remember to use in-text citations anytime you paraphrase, summarize, quote, or include data or statistics from your sources!) In the U.S. federal system, which level of government (local, state, or national) or branch (executive, legislative, judicial) is primarily responsible for addressing the issue? Is there more than one involved? Explain your reasoning. Be sure to include evidence from the U.S. Constitution and from the course to support your explanation. Identify all of the government officials or agencies discussed in your sources. Include their names and the level of government and agency that the officials represent. For example, are they a member of Congress? A federal judge? Or a member of a federal agency? How have these government officials or agencies attempted to address the issue? Describe their actions, citing evidence from all five articles or other online sources with in-text citations. In your opinion, has the federal government done a good job addressing the issue? Why or why not? What more should be done, and by which level of government? Step 4: Compile your reference list in APA style. Visit the APA Style: Citation Help resource for help with in-text citations and compiling your reference list in the Government in My Community template.
